Seminyak, Bali

Beach clubs, boutique stays, and Bali's best restaurant strip

Budget $0-$0/night

Seminyak sits between Kuta's chaos and Canggu's cool, and it gets the balance right. Jalan Kayu Aya (Eat Street) runs a tight 1.2km and packs in 40 restaurants without a bad one. Jalan Petitenget connects you to Potato Head Beach Club and La Plancha within 15 minutes on foot. The beach at the end of Jalan Oberoi faces west for proper sunsets. Mid-range hotels on Jalan Laksmana start around $90 per night. Luxury villas with private pools sit one alley back from the main drag. No motorbike, no problem: the area is actually walkable by Bali standards.

Best for
Couplesfirst-time Bali visitorsbeach club fansfood-focused travelers
Walk times
  • Seminyak Beach (Jalan Oberoi end) 8 min
  • Potato Head Beach Club (Jalan Petitenget) 15 min
  • Seminyak Square shopping 5 min
Skip if: You want temples and jungle over cocktail bars. Traffic on Jalan Raya Seminyak grinds to a stop from 5pm to 8pm every evening without exception.
Local tip: Book hotels on the alley streets behind Jalan Laksmana rather than on it. Same walk to the beach, half the noise, and typically 20 percent cheaper per night.

Ubud, Bali

Rice terraces, monkey forests, and genuine Balinese culture at altitude

Budget $0-$0/night

Ubud sits 700 meters above sea level in Bali's cultural heartland. Jalan Monkey Forest is the main tourist spine with cafes and art shops, but walk two minutes onto Jalan Hanoman and prices drop by a third. The Sacred Monkey Forest is at the southern end of Jalan Monkey Forest, 600 meters from most central hotels. Jalan Raya Ubud has the Ubud Palace and central market within 10 minutes of anywhere. Rice terrace walks begin behind Jalan Subak Sok Wayah. Family-run guesthouses on the gang (alley) streets off Jalan Hanoman cost $35 to $60 per night and include breakfast.

Best for
Solo travelersyogisculture seekersanyone avoiding beach crowds
Walk times
  • Sacred Monkey Forest entrance 10 min
  • Ubud Palace (Jalan Raya Ubud) 12 min
  • Campuhan Ridge Walk trailhead 20 min
Skip if: You need beach access. It is a 45-minute drive to the nearest sand, often longer with traffic. Scooters are the only practical transport once you leave the center.
Local tip: Stay on the northern side of Jalan Raya Ubud toward Penestanan village. Quieter streets, valley views, 15 minutes walk from the center without the Monkey Forest tourist density.

SCBD and Menteng, Jakarta

Jakarta's business core and its walkable colonial neighbor

Budget $0-$0/night

Jakarta's SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District) runs along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and has every international hotel brand you expect. Menteng, 2km east, is the city's most liveable neighborhood: tree-lined streets like Jalan Teuku Umar and Jalan HOS Cokroaminoto, embassies, and actual walkable blocks. Grand Indonesia mall on Jalan MH Thamrin is Jakarta's best high-end shopping. Mid-range hotels in Menteng start at $70 per night. The MRT Dukuh Atas station on Jalan Rasuna Said puts Soekarno-Hatta Airport 60 minutes away by rail without touching road traffic.

Best for
Business travelerstransit layoverscity explorers comfortable in megacities
Walk times
  • Grand Indonesia Mall (Jalan MH Thamrin) 18 min
  • Dukuh Atas MRT Station (Jalan Rasuna Said) 12 min
  • National Monument Monas 25 min
Skip if: You came for beaches or temples. Jakarta is a working megacity of 10 million people. Air quality and heat can be severe between June and September.
Local tip: Avoid hotels directly on Jalan Thamrin unless you need the address for client meetings. One block back on a side street costs 30 percent less and has a functional taxi queue instead of gridlock at the front door.

Prawirotaman, Yogyakarta

Batik galleries, warungs, and the best base for Borobudur day trips

Budget $0-$0/night

Yogyakarta's best neighborhood for travelers is Prawirotaman, not Malioboro. Jalan Prawirotaman I and II are lined with boutique guesthouses, art galleries, and proper Javanese warungs serving gudeg for 25,000 rupiah. The Kraton (Sultan's Palace) is a 20-minute walk north via Jalan Parangtritis. Malioboro Street, the city's main shopping strip, is 25 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by becak (cycle rickshaw). Borobudur temple is 42km away, best reached by 5am tour from here. Hotels on Jalan Prawirotaman II average $40 to $90 per night and include Javanese breakfasts.

Best for
Culture travelersbudget visitorsBorobudur day-tripperssolo backpackers wanting a stable base
Walk times
  • Malioboro Street 25 min
  • Kraton (Sultan's Palace) 20 min
  • Jalan Ngasem Bird Market 12 min
Skip if: You want beach vibes or modern malls. Yogyakarta is a temple-and-culture city. International restaurant options are limited outside Prawirotaman itself.
Local tip: Book on Jalan Prawirotaman II rather than I. Same access to everything, less foot traffic from the main road, and guesthouses here often include free bicycle rental without asking.

Where should first-time visitors to Indonesia stay?

Seminyak in Bali is the easiest starting point. You get beach access in 8 minutes, solid restaurant density on Jalan Kayu Aya, and mid-range hotels from $80 per night. It skips Kuta's backpacker chaos and is genuinely walkable by Indonesian standards. If temples matter more than beach clubs, book Ubud instead: it is 50 minutes away by road and completely different in character.

Is Bali better than Yogyakarta for a first trip to Indonesia?

Depends on what you want. Bali gives you beach, surf, rice terraces, and good international food on one island. Yogyakarta gives you Borobudur (the world's largest Buddhist temple, 42km away), Prambanan Hindu temples (17km away), and Javanese culture at roughly half the Bali price. With 10 days, fly into Bali and take a 90-minute flight or overnight train to Yogyakarta before you leave.

How much should I budget per night for accommodation in Indonesia?

Budget is $30 to $50 per night in Yogyakarta or rural Bali guesthouses. Mid-range runs $70 to $130 in Ubud or Seminyak and gets you a proper en-suite room with breakfast. Luxury starts at $180 in SCBD Jakarta or beachfront Seminyak. Bali is more expensive than Java across every tier by roughly 40 percent. Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead for Seminyak in July and August when European summer overlaps with school holidays.

Is it worth staying in Jakarta or should I skip it?

Skip it unless you have a specific reason to be there. The food scene around Menteng and Kebayoran Baru is genuinely excellent, but beaches are 60 minutes away and temples require an 8-hour day trip. Most travelers transit through Soekarno-Hatta Airport without staying overnight. If you do stop: Menteng around Jalan Teuku Umar is the most liveable area and has direct MRT access to the airport.
