Ischia Porto

The lively harbor base for first-timers

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Ischia Porto is where the ferries dock, so you step off the boat and you're already there. The action centers on Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna, two pedestrian streets stacked with gelaterias, wine bars, and shops that stay open past midnight in summer. The harbor itself is a former volcanic crater, which is why it's so perfectly round. You're a 10-minute walk from Spiaggia dei Pescatori, a free public beach with shallow water. Bus stops for the whole island sit right at the port, so you don't need a car. Avoid the cluster of generic hotels along Via Iasolino if you want quiet.

Best for
First visitno rental carwant restaurants and bars on your doorstep
Walk times
  • Ferry terminal 2 min
  • Spiaggia dei Pescatori 10 min
  • Castello Aragonese 18 min
Skip if: You want a quiet pool day or a sunset view from your room
Local tip: Walk to Ischia Ponte for dinner instead of eating at the harbor. Same island, half the markup, and you finish at the Aragonese Castle causeway.

Forio

West coast sunsets and proper beaches

Mid-range $110-$250/night

Forio sits on the western shore, which means the sun sets straight into the sea from your hotel terrace. The town center is built around Piazza Municipio and the white-domed Chiesa del Soccorso, the most photographed church on the island. Citara Beach is a 15-minute walk south and connects to Poseidon Gardens, the largest thermal park in Ischia. Restaurants along Via Marina serve the catch from that morning. Forio is bigger than it looks, so check the address before booking. Anything past Cuotto feels rural and you'll need a scooter or the bus to reach town for dinner.

Best for
Sunset chasersbeach daystravelers who want a real town with locals
Walk times
  • Citara Beach 15 min
  • Chiesa del Soccorso 5 min
  • Poseidon Gardens 18 min
Skip if: You arrive late and don't want to deal with the 50-minute bus from the port
Local tip: Book a hotel within 10 minutes of Piazza Municipio. The CS bus to the port runs every 20 minutes and the last one leaves around 11pm, which matters if you eat late.

Sant'Angelo

Pedestrian-only village built into the cliff

Luxury $180-$450/night

Sant'Angelo is a fishing village on the south coast where cars are banned from the center. You park at the top and walk down, which means luggage on cobblestones, but the payoff is a place that feels frozen in 1970. The piazzetta wraps around a small harbor with maybe 15 restaurants, all facing a rocky promontory tied to the village by a thin sandbar. Maronti Beach is a 10-minute walk east and has natural hot springs bubbling up through the sand at low tide. Hotels here are smaller and family-run, often with terraces cut into the cliff. There's no nightlife past midnight. That's the point.

Best for
Coupleshoneymoonsanyone who wants to leave the car behind
Walk times
  • Sant'Angelo piazzetta 3 min
  • Maronti Beach 10 min
  • Fumarole hot sand 15 min
Skip if: You have heavy bags or mobility issues, the walk down is steep
Local tip: Take a water taxi from the piazzetta to the Aphrodite Apollon thermal park. It's $8 each way and beats the cliff path in August heat.

Lacco Ameno

Quiet luxury and the best thermal spas

Luxury $200-$550/night

Lacco Ameno is the smallest of the main towns and the most polished. It's built around a mushroom-shaped rock called Il Fungo that sits 20 meters offshore. The seafront promenade along Corso Angelo Rizzoli runs past the Negombo thermal park, which most people consider the best on the island. Hotels here lean upscale, including the Regina Isabella, where Liz Taylor stayed in the sixties. The town shuts down by 11pm and there's no real nightlife, which is exactly why people come. You're a 15-minute bus ride from Forio if you want more action, or a 25-minute ride from the port for ferries.

Best for
Spa weekendsolder travelersanyone who values quiet over choice
Walk times
  • Il Fungo and beach 3 min
  • Negombo thermal park 12 min
  • Lacco Ameno bus stop 2 min
Skip if: You're on a budget, this is the most expensive corner of the island
Local tip: Book Negombo entry online before 9am for the morning rate. The afternoon ticket is the same price but you lose the prime sunbed real estate.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Ischia?

Ischia Porto. You arrive by ferry directly into town, every island bus leaves from there, and you're never more than 10 minutes from a restaurant or beach. Skip it only if you specifically want quiet.

Do I need a rental car in Ischia?

No. The island has six bus lines (CS, CD, 1, 2, 7, 8) that loop the perimeter every 15 to 30 minutes. A weekly pass costs around $25. Cars are actually a hassle in Ischia Porto and Sant'Angelo, where parking starts at $20 a day.

Which area has the best beaches?

Forio for variety (Citara, San Francesco, Cava dell'Isola), Sant'Angelo for the natural hot springs at Maronti, and Lacco Ameno for the prettiest swim spot at Il Fungo. Ischia Porto's beaches are functional but crowded.

When is the cheapest time to visit Ischia?

Late April through May and October. Hotels drop 30 to 40 percent from August rates, the thermal parks are open, and the ferries from Naples run on full schedule. Avoid November through March, when most hotels close entirely.
