Portree

The only real town. Your best all-round base.

Mid-range $95-$210/night

Portree is Skye's capital and its only genuine town. The colourful harbour houses on Quay Street are the island's most photographed scene, but the real value is practical: Somerled Square has the supermarket, pharmacies, and the best concentration of restaurants anywhere on Skye. Wentworth Street and Bosville Terrace hold most of the guesthouses and small hotels. You are 25 minutes from the Old Man of Storr and 40 from the Quiraing. It is busier than anywhere else on Skye in July and August, but the infrastructure makes it the easiest base for first-timers and anyone without a car.

Best for
First-time visitorscouplesanyone who wants restaurants and services within walking distance
Walk times
  • Portree harbour viewpoint 5 min
  • Aros Centre cinema and cafe 12 min
  • Co-op supermarket on Somerled Square 4 min
Skip if: You want total quiet or are exploring Cuillin and south Skye exclusively
Local tip: Book Cafe Arriba on Quay Brae in advance. It is a tiny room and the best breakfast on the island by a clear distance.

Broadford

Gateway town, lower prices, easy access in every direction.

Budget $70-$140/night

Broadford sits on the A87 in south Skye, strung along the shore of Broadford Bay. It is the second-largest settlement on the island and the first real stop after crossing the Skye Bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh. The main road has a petrol station, a Co-op, and accommodation options that cost 20 to 30 percent less than Portree equivalents. Waterloo Road and Lime Park hold most of the B&Bs. The Red Cuillin rise directly behind the village. From here you reach Elgol in 25 minutes for the best Cuillin views, and the Sleat peninsula in 15. A solid budget base with decent road access north and south.

Best for
Budget travellershikers focusing on south Skye and Elgolvisitors arriving via the Skye Bridge
Walk times
  • Broadford Bay shoreline 3 min
  • Co-op on the main A87 6 min
  • Red Cuillin viewpoint at the Waterloo road end 15 min
Skip if: You want to be close to the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr, or Dunvegan Castle
Local tip: The Skye Serpentarium on Old Mill Road is a genuinely good rainy-day stop and costs very little. Rain will happen.

Dunvegan

Quiet west coast base beside Skye's most famous castle.

Mid-range $85-$165/night

Dunvegan sits on the northwest coast on the shores of Loch Dunvegan. It is small: one hotel, a handful of B&Bs, and Dunvegan Castle at the end of the main road. The castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and worth the entry fee. Coral Beach is 3 miles north via the single-track Claigan road, with a 20-minute walk from the car park. The Duirinish Peninsula and the flat-topped MacLeod's Tables hills are visible from the village road. Glendale and Colbost are 15 minutes further west if you want more isolation. Midges are genuinely bad here from June to August.

Best for
History loversphotographerstravellers who want the west coast Skye experience away from the main tourist flow
Walk times
  • Dunvegan Castle entrance gate 8 min
  • Dunvegan village pier 5 min
  • Loch Dunvegan shoreline path 3 min
Skip if: You dislike midges, need reliable restaurant access, or are focused on the Trotternish peninsula
Local tip: The Three Chimneys restaurant at Colbost is 15 minutes away and one of Scotland's best tables. Book months ahead if you plan to eat there.

Sleat

The green peninsula. Skye's quietest and most sheltered corner.

Mid-range $100-$225/night

Sleat is the southernmost peninsula on Skye, called the Garden of Skye for its unusually sheltered, wooded landscape. Armadale village has the ferry terminal connecting to Mallaig on the mainland, a scenic alternative arrival or departure. The Clan Donald Centre and ruined Armadale Castle are a short walk from the pier. The A851 runs the length of the peninsula through Isleornsay and Teangue. Isleornsay has outstanding views across the Sound of Sleat to Knoydart. Some of Skye's best self-catering cottages sit along this road. Expect single-track lanes, no meaningful public transport, and roughly one restaurant per village.

Best for
Couplesself-catering staystravellers arriving by ferry from Mallaiganyone wanting genuine isolation
Walk times
  • Armadale ferry terminal 6 min
  • Clan Donald Centre at Armadale Castle grounds 8 min
  • Armadale beach 10 min
Skip if: You need a car-free base, want multiple restaurant options, or plan to cover north Skye daily
Local tip: The Isleornsay Hotel bar is the most atmospheric pub on Skye. Small, locals-heavy, and the whisky list is serious.

What is the best area to stay in Isle of Skye for first-timers?

Portree is the clear answer. It has the only real concentration of restaurants, a supermarket on Somerled Square, and central access to the Trotternish highlights. You can reach the Old Man of Storr in 25 minutes and the Quiraing in 40. Everything else on the island requires a car regardless, so Portree's ability to walk for food and supplies is a genuine practical advantage. Expect to pay $95 to $210 per night depending on the property type and season.

Do you need a car to get around Isle of Skye?

Yes, you need a car. There is limited public transport: a bus runs between Portree and Broadford, with seasonal services to Dunvegan and Armadale. But the Quiraing, Elgol, Coral Beach, Neist Point Lighthouse, and most of the island's highlights are not reachable by bus at useful times. Book your car before your accommodation. In summer, hire car availability in Kyle of Lochalsh and Portree gets tight fast. Budget $40 to $65 per day for a small car.

When is the best time to visit Isle of Skye?

May and September are the best months. May brings long daylight, fewer crowds, and green landscape without the July and August peak. September has the most stable weather relative to the rest of the year and excellent light for photography. July and August bring queues at the Old Man of Storr car park and fully booked restaurants weeks out. June through August also brings midges, especially near standing water and on calm evenings at Dunvegan and Sleat. A midge net and repellent are not optional gear if you visit in summer.

How far is Isle of Skye from Edinburgh and Inverness?

From Inverness it is about 110 miles via the A82 and A87, roughly 2.5 hours to Portree without stops. From Edinburgh it is around 240 miles and takes 4 to 5 hours. Both routes are scenic but include single-track roads once you cross the Skye Bridge. There is no direct train to Portree. The train from Inverness runs to Kyle of Lochalsh, where you cross the Skye Bridge by car or local bus. The train journey from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh takes around 2.5 hours.
