Jasper Townsite

Walk to everything. The only choice if you came without a car.

Luxury $180-$550/night

Jasper Townsite sits inside the park, centered on Connaught Drive and Patricia Street. Everything is within a 10-minute walk: restaurants, gear rentals, the VIA Rail station, and multiple trailheads. Connaught Drive runs parallel to the tracks and holds most mid-range hotels. Patricia Street is quieter, with a few boutique options a block back. Parking gets brutal in July and August. The Jasper SkyTram gondola is a 7-minute drive south on Whistlers Mountain Road. Bears wander through town in spring and fall. Book 6 months ahead for peak summer. Noise from the main strip carries at night on the west-facing side.

Best for
First-timerscouplessolo travelers without a car
Walk times
  • Patricia Street shops and cafes 5 min
  • Jasper VIA Rail Station 8 min
  • Old Fort Point trailhead 18 min
Skip if: You want silence. Weekend crowds and street noise make this feel like a small city in July.
Local tip: Request east-facing rooms on Connaught Drive. You get Pyramid Mountain views without the strip noise.

Pyramid Lake Road

Quieter nights, bigger lake views, 5 minutes from town.

Luxury $220-$480/night

Pyramid Lake Road runs north from the townsite toward Pyramid and Patricia Lakes. Pyramid Lake Resort sits right on the water with direct sightlines to Pyramid Mountain. No traffic noise. Moose sightings are common along the road at dawn and dusk. The road is 3.5km from the town center with no sidewalk, so you need a car or the park shuttle. Canoe rentals are available at both lakes. A few properties here are adults-only. Views at sunset turn the whole lake orange. This corridor fills nearly as fast as the townsite in summer, so book equally early.

Best for
Coupleswildlife watchersanyone doing a car-based trip who wants quiet evenings
Walk times
  • Pyramid Lake shoreline 3 min
  • Patricia Lake 12 min
  • Jasper Townsite center (walk, no sidewalk) 45 min
Skip if: You want walkable access to restaurants and nightlife. This requires a vehicle for everything except the lake itself.
Local tip: Pyramid Lake at sunset is genuinely spectacular. Request a west-facing room and arrive before 8pm.

Pocahontas and Miette Hot Springs

Remote, affordable, and an hour closer to Edmonton.

Mid-range $130-$280/night

Pocahontas sits near the northeast park entrance off Highway 16, about 45km from Jasper Townsite. Miette Hot Springs, the hottest natural hot springs in the Canadian Rockies at 54 degrees Celsius before cooling, are a 16km drive up a winding mountain road from here. The Overlander Mountain Lodge on Highway 16 is the main accommodation option. Athabasca Falls and the Icefields Parkway require a 40-minute drive west. This area suits road-trippers arriving from Edmonton who want to skip townsite congestion. Nights are genuinely dark. Wildlife on the road at dusk includes elk, deer, and black bears regularly.

Best for
Budget travelershot springs fansroad-trippers from Edmonton
Walk times
  • Pocahontas trailhead 10 min
  • Athabasca River viewpoint 20 min
  • Miette Hot Springs (drive) 25 min
Skip if: You want walkable access to Jasper restaurants. It is a 45-minute drive to anything.
Local tip: Miette Hot Springs is open until 10:30pm in summer. Go after 8pm to get the pools nearly empty and the mountain dark around you.

Hinton (Gateway Town)

Half the price. Forty-five minutes from the park gate.

Mid-range $90-$160/night

Hinton is a small Alberta town 70km east of Jasper on Highway 16. It sits outside the park boundary, so you pay no park entry fees from the hotel itself. Chain hotels along Gregg Avenue and Switzer Drive run $90 to $150 USD in peak summer. That is $80 to $200 cheaper per night than Jasper Townsite for comparable quality. Hinton has a grocery store, gas stations, a Canadian Tire, and a Tim Hortons. For families doing day trips rather than immersive park stays, the savings add up across a week. Also the most reliable fallback option when Jasper fully books out.

Best for
Budget travelersfamilies doing day tripslast-minute bookers who missed Jasper
Walk times
  • Gregg Avenue restaurants 8 min
  • Hinton grocery store 12 min
  • Jasper National Park east gate (drive) 45 min
Skip if: You want to wake up inside the park. The daily drive gets tedious by day three of a week-long trip.
Local tip: Buy your Parks Canada Discovery Pass at the Hinton Visitor Centre before driving in. Skips the gate queue entirely.

What is the best area to stay in Jasper National Park for first-timers?

Stay in Jasper Townsite. Patricia Street and Connaught Drive put restaurants, gear rentals, and trailheads within a 10-minute walk. You do not need a car for the first two days. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is 4km east of town on Lac Beauvert if budget allows. For mid-range, Connaught Drive options are the most practical. Book 6 months ahead for July and August without exception.

Is it cheaper to stay outside Jasper National Park?

Significantly cheaper. Hotels in Hinton run $90 to $150 USD in peak summer versus $200 to $500 inside the park. You also avoid the park entry fee, though a weekly Parks Canada Discovery Pass at around $72 CAD is worth buying if you visit for more than two days. The 45-minute daily drive from Hinton is the real cost. For families on a week-long trip, the savings often exceed $500 total.

Do you need a car to stay near Jasper National Park?

Only if you stay in Jasper Townsite itself. The town is fully walkable and a park shuttle connects to Maligne Lake and a few other key spots. Everywhere else requires a car: Pyramid Lake Road has no sidewalk, Pocahontas is 45km away, and Hinton requires daily driving. Rent a car in Edmonton or Calgary before arriving if you plan to explore the Icefields Parkway or Athabasca Falls.

When should I book a hotel near Jasper National Park?

Book 6 to 9 months ahead for July and August. Jasper Townsite has fewer than 3,000 hotel rooms total and sells out completely. Canada Day (July 1) and the August long weekend fill within hours of opening. September is the best value window: crowds drop, prices fall 20 to 30 percent, and trails are still clear. Winter from December to March books fast for Marmot Basin skiing, so do not assume off-season means easy availability.
