Where to Stay in Jeju Island

Four areas, four very different vibes. Pick the one that fits your trip, not the one Instagram tells you to.

Jeju City

Land here, stay here, skip the rental car drama

Budget $70-$180/night

Jeju City is where your flight lands and where most people should base themselves for short trips. Stay near Nohyeong-dong or around Yeon-dong for the best mix of food and walkability. Black Pork Street on Gwandeok-ro has 30+ grill houses, and Dongmun Traditional Market on Gwandeokno 14-gil opens at 8am for hallabong tangerines and abalone porridge. The downtown grid around Jungang-ro is flat and walkable. Tap Dong waterfront has cheap seafood and night views. Avoid hotels near the airport itself. They are loud and far from anything fun.

Best for
First trip to Jeju2-3 night staystravelers without a rental car
Walk times
  • Dongmun Market: 5 15 min
  • Black Pork Street 10 min
  • Tap Dong waterfront 15 min
Skip if: You came for beaches and resort pools
Local tip: Bus 600 runs from the airport to Jungmun for 5,000 won. You do not need a taxi.

Jungmun Resort Town

Jeju's purpose-built resort strip on the south coast

Luxury $180-$450/night

Jungmun is the polished resort cluster 40 minutes south of the airport, built around Jungmun Beach and Jungmun Saekdal Beach. Lotte Hotel Jeju, Shilla Jeju, and Parnas sit shoulder to shoulder with private pools and ocean views. Cheonjeyeon Falls is a 10-minute walk from most resorts. The Teddy Bear Museum and Yeomiji Botanical Garden are inside the complex. Outside the resorts there is little local life, so do not expect cheap food or character. This is a buffet-and-pool zone, and it does that job well.

Best for
Families with kidshoneymoonersanyone who wants resort amenities
Walk times
  • Jungmun Beach: 5 10 min
  • Cheonjeyeon Falls 10 min
  • Yeomiji Garden 5 min
Skip if: You want street food, local cafes, or a sense of where you actually are
Local tip: Book the resort shuttle to Jungmun Olle Market for cheaper dinners. Resort restaurants triple the price of the same dishes.

Seogwipo

Real town energy with waterfalls at the edge

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Seogwipo sits 15 minutes east of Jungmun and feels like an actual town instead of a resort park. Maeil Olle Market on Jungang-ro 73beon-gil is the best market on the island for grilled hairtail and tangerine juice. Cheonjiyeon Falls is a 10-minute walk from the market. Jeongbang Falls drops directly into the sea, which only happens in two other places on Earth. Boat trips to Munseom leave from Seogwipo Port. Stay near the harbor or along Chilsimni-ro for walkable access. The Olle Trail Route 6 starts here.

Best for
Hikers doing the Olle Trailtravelers who want a real town feel
Walk times
  • Maeil Olle Market: central, 5 min
  • Cheonjiyeon Falls 10 min
  • Jeongbang Falls 15 min
Skip if: You want nightlife or shopping
Local tip: The Saturday night market at Maeil Olle runs until 9pm and is half the price of resort food.

Aewol

Cafe-lined west coast strip that locals actually like

Mid-range $120-$300/night

Aewol is 20 minutes west of the airport along the coastal road and has become Jeju's cafe capital over the last five years. Monsant Cafe on Aewol-ro and Bombom on the same stretch have ocean-front terraces. Hyeopjae Beach is 15 minutes further west and has the clearest water on the island. Geumneung Beach next door is quieter. The area is mostly guesthouses and small boutique stays, not big hotels. You need a rental car here. Public buses run but are slow. Aewol is also where many Seoul transplants opened second homes, so the food is genuinely good.

Best for

Walk times
  • Hyeopjae Beach: drive only, 15 min
  • Monsant Cafe 5 min
  • Geumneung Beach 20 min
Skip if: You do not have a rental car

What is the best area in Jeju for first-time visitors?

Jeju City for short trips under 3 nights, Jungmun if you want resort amenities. Jeju City puts you near the airport, Dongmun Market, and bus connections. Jungmun is 40 minutes south but has the polished resorts and Cheonjeyeon Falls within walking distance.

Do I need a rental car in Jeju?

Yes for Aewol and the west coast. No if you stay in Jeju City or Jungmun. Bus 600 connects the airport to Jungmun for 5,000 won and runs every 15 minutes. Aewol cafes and Hyeopjae Beach are not realistic without a car.

Where should I stay for beaches in Jeju?

Hyeopjae or Geumneung on the west coast for clear water, Jungmun Beach for resort access. Skip Iho Tewoo Beach near the airport. The water is murky and the famous red and white horse statues are smaller than they look online.

How many nights do I need in Jeju?

3 nights minimum, 5 is ideal. With 3 nights base in Jungmun or Jeju City and pick one side of the island. With 5 you can split between Seogwipo for the south and Aewol for the west, which is how most repeat visitors do it.
