Country Club Plaza

Upscale base with walkable dining and Spanish architecture

Mid-range $160-$420/night

Country Club Plaza sits around 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway, built in 1922 as America's first outdoor shopping center. The Spanish Colonial Revival facades along Nichols Road and Ward Parkway hold some of the city's best restaurants. The Raphael Hotel on Ward Parkway puts you steps from Halls Kansas City and a 12-minute walk to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Parking is easy, the neighborhood is clean, and breakfast spots on Broadway Avenue are solid. Skip the chain restaurants on the main drag and head one block east on 48th Street for locally owned spots that actually fill up at lunch.

The 21c Museum Hotel on Wyandotte Street rotates contemporary art installations through lobbies and hallways. Hotel Indigo sits two blocks north on Baltimore Avenue. First Fridays bring gallery openings and street food vendors every month from April through October, loud until midnight. Hotel rates here run $40 to $60 cheaper per night than equivalent rooms at Plaza or downtown. The Arabia Steamboat Museum on Delaware Street is one of the best museums in the city for a half-day. What is the best area to stay in Kansas City for first-timers?

Country Club Plaza is the safest bet for first-timers. You get walkable dining on Nichols Road, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art 12 minutes on foot, and solid mid-range to upscale hotels in a clean neighborhood. Crossroads Arts District is a close second if you want a more creative, food-forward vibe and do not mind slightly noisier evenings near Grand Boulevard.

Is it safe to walk around Kansas City at night?

Country Club Plaza, Crossroads, and the Power & Light District are all fine to walk after dark. River Market is safe near City Market and Delaware Street but gets quiet north of 4th Street after 9pm. Avoid East 12th Street east of Troost Avenue and the blocks around 18th and Vine after dark unless you are going to a specific venue.

Where is the best BBQ near the main hotel areas?

Joe's Kansas City BBQ sits on West 47th Avenue just across the state line, a $10 Lyft from Country Club Plaza. Arthur Bryant's Barbeque on Brooklyn Avenue is a $12 Lyft from downtown. Q39 on West 39th Street is 10 minutes on foot from the Plaza. You do not need a car for Q39 if you are staying in the Plaza or Westport area.

When should you book hotels in Kansas City to get the best rates?

Book 3 to 4 weeks out for weekday stays and you will find $110 to $160 rooms in solid downtown or Crossroads hotels. Weekends with T-Mobile Center concerts, Big 12 basketball, or the Kansas City Marathon push prices up 40 to 60 percent. Check the T-Mobile Center event calendar before you commit to dates and avoid those weekends unless you are attending the show.
