Ao Nang

The main hub. Convenient, crowded, and surprisingly functional.

Budget $35-$180/night

Ao Nang Beach Road is Krabi's beating heart. The 1.2km main strip runs from the longtail pier at the southern end to the night market zone near Soi 9. You get 7-Elevens, massage shops, and restaurants on every corner. The beach is decent but not Krabi's best. What you're paying for is access: longtail boats to Railay leave every 20 minutes, and four-island tours depart at 9am from the same pier. Chalong Guesthouse Lane off Moo 2 has the best cheap eats. Not quiet. Not scenic from your room. But everything works.

Best for
First-timersisland-hoppersfamilies who need easy access to everything
Walk times
  • Ao Nang Pier (longtail boats to Railay) 5 min
  • 7-Eleven on Beach Road 2 min
  • Noppharat Thara Beach (quieter end) 18 min
Skip if: You want quiet mornings, a beach to yourself, or you hate tourist strips
Local tip: Stay on Soi 4 or 5 rather than the main beach road. You cut street noise in half and you're still 3 minutes from the pier.

Railay Beach

No roads in or out. Just limestone cliffs, clear water, and higher prices.

Budget $60-$350/night

Railay is a peninsula reachable only by longtail boat: 15-20 minutes from Ao Nang pier (100-150 THB) or 20 minutes from Krabi Town pier. There are two sides. Railay West has the swimmable beach with postcard karst views. Railay East faces mangroves and is where ferries dock. The path between them takes 8 minutes on foot. Rock climbing routes on Muay Thai Wall and Tonsai Tower are 5 minutes from most guesthouses. Electricity is trucked in, which partly explains why a fan room here costs more than air-con in Ao Nang. Restaurants close by 11pm.

Best for
Rock climberscouplesanyone who wants a car-free setting with dramatic scenery
Walk times
  • Railay West Beach 3 min
  • Railay East pier (longtail dock) 8 min
  • Phra Nang Cave Beach 12 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget, need reliable WiFi for work, or plan to party past 11pm
Local tip: Book Railay West side, not East. East-facing rooms open onto mangroves. Pay the 20-30% premium for a West-facing room with the karst view. Worth every baht.

Krabi Town

Where locals actually live. Cheap, real, and almost always overlooked.

Budget $15-$80/night

Krabi Town sits on the Krabi River, 45 minutes from Ao Nang by songthaew (30 THB). The action centers on Maharaj Road and the Khong Kha Road night market (Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm). The Uttarakit Road passenger pier connects directly to Ko Lanta, Ko Phi Phi, and Ko Jum by ferry, making this the smartest base for island-hoppers. Konkor Road has the best local restaurants. Guesthouses on Chaofa Road run $15-30 a night with air-con. Tiger Cave Temple is 20 minutes north by motorcycle taxi. No beach without transport, but prices are half of Ao Nang.

Best for
Budget travelerssolo backpackersisland-hoppers1-2 night transit stays
Walk times
  • Khong Kha Road Night Market 10 min
  • Uttarakit Road Ferry Pier 12 min
  • Maharaj Road restaurants 7 min
Skip if: You came to Krabi for the beach, need to be near Ao Nang activities, or cannot handle noisy street traffic
Local tip: The Thursday to Sunday night market on Khong Kha Road beats anything in Ao Nang. Get the grilled corn and mango sticky rice from the stalls on the river side.

Klong Muang

The quiet stretch. Boutique resorts, empty sand, and almost no backpackers.

Mid-range $90-$400/night

Klong Muang runs north of Ao Nang along Route 4034, about 15 kilometers from town (20 minutes by car). The beach is 3 kilometers of near-empty sand backed by casuarina trees. Tubkaek Beach, the southern section, is calmer and better for swimming from November to April. Most resorts run free shuttles to Ao Nang. Klong Muang Pier is a 10-minute walk and offers longtail charters to the four islands without the Ao Nang crowds. Kayaks rent for 200 THB per hour at most resort reception desks. One 7-Eleven, two restaurants, no bar strip.

Best for
Coupleshoneymoonersfamilies who want resort space and an empty beach
Walk times
  • Klong Muang Beach main stretch 4 min
  • Klong Muang Pier 10 min
  • Nearest restaurant cluster 8 min
Skip if: You want to walk to restaurants, bars, or markets. You need nightlife or a budget option.
Local tip: Book an east-facing room. Klong Muang sunrises over the karst islands beat any sunset in Ao Nang. Set an alarm for 6:15am on your first morning.

Where should first-time visitors to Krabi stay?

Ao Nang is the safest first-timer choice. Longtail boats to Railay leave every 20 minutes from Ao Nang Pier. Four-island tours depart from the same spot at 9am. You can eat, shop, and get a massage without leaving a 500-meter radius. Stay on Soi 4 or 5 instead of the beachfront to cut street noise without losing convenience.

Is Railay Beach worth the extra cost?

Yes, if you want drama and you are not on a strict budget. A fan room at Railay costs about the same as air-con in Ao Nang ($60-80), and the views justify it for a night or two. The catch: electricity can be unreliable, WiFi is slow, and everything closes by 11pm. Two nights is the sweet spot before you start missing convenience.

Which area of Krabi is cheapest?

Krabi Town. Guesthouses on Chaofa Road and Konkor Road run $15-30 a night with air-con and hot water included. The Thursday to Sunday night market on Khong Kha Road means dinner costs under $3. The trade-off is a 45-minute songthaew ride (30 THB) to Ao Nang. If you plan to island-hop by ferry, the Uttarakit Road pier makes Krabi Town the most practical base anyway.

Where should I stay in Krabi for a honeymoon?

Railay West or Klong Muang, depending on your budget. Railay gives you dramatic karst cliffs and zero cars. Klong Muang gives you an empty beach, proper resort amenities, and east-facing sunrise views over the limestone islands. For a 7-night honeymoon, split it: 2 nights at Railay, 5 nights at Klong Muang. Klong Muang resorts run free shuttles to Ao Nang if you want dinner options.
