Como Town

Best base for first-timers and budget travelers

Mid-range $80-$180/night

Como is the lake's main hub and the easiest place to land. The train station (Como San Giovanni) connects directly to Milan Centrale in 35 minutes, and the ferry pier at Piazza Cavour puts the whole lake within reach. The historic center around Via Cantu and the Duomo is genuinely beautiful. The cathedral took 400 years to build and it shows. You can walk from the station to the waterfront in under 15 minutes along Via Fratelli Recchi. It is not the most scenic part of the lake but it is the most practical. The funicular up to Brunate runs from near the lakefront and takes 7 minutes. From the top you get a view that most tourists pay twice the price in Bellagio to see. Restaurants on side streets like Via Rodari beat anything on the main piazza for quality and price. Como works best as a base for day trips, not as a destination in itself.

Walk times
  • Train station (Como San Giovanni) to Duomo 12 min
  • Duomo to ferry pier at Piazza Cavour 8 min
  • Ferry pier to funicular base at Piazza Luigi Volta 6 min
Skip if: You want to wake up to open lake views. Como's waterfront is pleasant but the lake narrows here and the scenery is ordinary compared to the central basin around Bellagio and Varenna.
Local tip: Take the funicular to Brunate at sunset. The ride costs under 4 euros each way and the panorama beats any rooftop bar on the lake. Stay the night in Como and take the first morning ferry north. You save 40 percent on accommodation.

Bellagio

The classic postcard view, worth the premium if you time it right

Mid-range $150-$400/night

Bellagio sits at the tip of the central peninsula where the two southern branches of the lake meet. The view from Piazza della Chiesa across both shorelines is the image you have seen on every travel poster. Via Garibaldi is the main drag, lined with silk shops and gelato. The famous stepped alley, Salita Serbelloni, climbs steeply from the port through flower-covered walls. Ferries to Varenna take 15 minutes. To Como it is 75 minutes by slow ferry or 45 by hydrofoil. The village itself is walkable end to end in 20 minutes. Day trippers flood in by ferry between 10am and 5pm in summer, turning the streets into a slow shuffle. Staying here means you get the evenings, which are genuinely magical. The promenade around Villa Serbelloni quiets down by 8pm and the lake turns pink. That is what you are paying the premium for.

Skip if: You are visiting in July or August on a short trip. The day-tripper crowds make the village feel like a theme park from 10am to 5pm. Varenna gives you 80 percent of the experience at 60 percent of the price.
Local tip: Walk 20 minutes north along the water past Via Valassina to Pescallo, a tiny fishing hamlet with two restaurants and zero tour groups. It is technically still Bellagio but feels like a different lake. Book dinner there at least one night.

Varenna

Quieter, less crowded, and arguably the most beautiful

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Varenna sits on the eastern shore of the lake and has a direct train connection from Milan Centrale in under an hour. This makes it the smartest entry point if you are flying into Malpensa or Linate. The village itself is tiny. From Piazza San Giorgio to the ferry dock takes under 5 minutes on foot. The Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a narrow lakeside path running north from the dock along the water, is about 400 meters long and suspended directly over the lake surface. It is one of the best short walks in northern Italy. The gardens of Villa Monastero on Via IV Novembre open April through October and cost 6 euros entry. Ferries cross to Bellagio in 15 minutes and to Menaggio in 20. The village has very few restaurants, so book ahead for dinner in high season. The ones clustered around Via XX Settembre and the main piazza are genuinely excellent.

Skip if: You want nightlife or a wide restaurant selection. Varenna closes early. By 9pm the village is nearly empty. If you want buzz and options after dinner, stay in Como or Menaggio.
Local tip: Take the 9:15am ferry to Bellagio, spend the morning before the crowds arrive, then cross to Menaggio for lunch on Piazza Garibaldi. Return to Varenna by 4pm on the afternoon car ferry. This triangle costs about 12 euros in tickets and covers the three best villages in one day.

Menaggio

The practical western base with real local life

Mid-range $90-$200/night

Menaggio is on the western shore directly opposite Varenna and functions as the car ferry hub for the central lake. If you are driving in from Switzerland via the A9, this is your natural first stop. The main square, Piazza Garibaldi, faces the water and has a bar scene that does not disappear when the tour boats leave. Via Calvi and the side streets behind the piazza have a supermarket, a hardware store, and a pharmacy: actual infrastructure for people who live here, not just visit. The hike up to Rifugio Menaggio takes about 90 minutes from town and rewards with panoramic views over the central basin. Car ferries cross to Varenna and Bellagio every 20 minutes in season. The area draws walkers and cyclists more than any other part of the lake. Prices run noticeably lower than Bellagio for equivalent quality.

Walk times
  • Car ferry dock to Piazza Garibaldi 3 min
  • Piazza Garibaldi to start of Rifugio Menaggio trail 25 min

Skip if: You want the classic romantic Lake Como aesthetic without effort. Menaggio looks like a real Italian town because it is one. The scenery is beautiful but not immediately photogenic the way Bellagio is.
Local tip: The beach at Lido di Menaggio, 10 minutes walk north along Via Lusardi, is the best free swimming spot on the western shore. Buy lunch supplies at the supermarket on Via IV Novembre and skip the lakefront restaurant markup entirely.

Tremezzo

Luxury villas, Villa Carlotta, and very little else

Luxury $200-$500/night

Tremezzo is for people who want to spend most of their time at their property or walking through exceptional gardens. The main draw is Villa Carlotta on Via Regina, a Baroque villa with a garden famous for azaleas and rhododendrons in April and May. Entry costs 12 euros and easily fills two hours. The village itself is minimal: a handful of restaurants on Via Regina and a small pebble beach. What Tremezzo does exceptionally well is proximity to Bellagio. The ferry crossing takes under 10 minutes and runs regularly. You get the Bellagio experience at half the accommodation price if you are willing to arrive by boat. The road Via Regina runs the length of the western shore and is beautiful but tight: driving in summer is stressful with buses and tourist traffic. The train does not reach Tremezzo. Getting here without a car means the ferry from Como (around 60 minutes) or a bus from Menaggio.

Best for

Walk times
  • Ferry dock to Villa Carlotta entrance 3 min
  • Villa Carlotta to Tremezzo village center 5 min
  • Ferry dock to Bellagio by water 10 min
Skip if: You are visiting without a car in July or August and need flexibility. Bus connections are infrequent and the ferry is your main link to the rest of the lake. Without a car you are somewhat captive.
Local tip: Visit Villa Carlotta on a weekday before 10am in late April when the rhododendrons peak. Weekends in May have queues forming at the gate. Come early, spend 90 minutes inside, then take the 10-minute ferry to Bellagio for lunch before the day-tripper boats arrive.

What is the best area to stay in Lake Como for first-timers?

Como town is the most practical choice for a first visit. The train from Milan Centrale takes 35 minutes and costs under 5 euros. From the ferry pier at Piazza Cavour you can reach Bellagio in 75 minutes or Varenna in about 90 minutes. Hotels in Como run 40 to 60 percent cheaper than Bellagio for equivalent quality. Use Como as your base, take day trips to the villages, and spend the extra money on dinner instead of accommodation.

Is Bellagio worth the higher price?

Yes, if you stay 3 nights or more and avoid peak summer. The evening atmosphere after 7pm, when the day-tripper ferries have left, justifies the premium. In July and August the village feels overcrowded during the day. If you are visiting in summer for just 1 or 2 nights, Varenna gives you 80 percent of the Bellagio experience at 60 percent of the price, with a direct train from Milan to simplify logistics.

How do you get around Lake Como without a car?

The ferry system covers all major villages. Como to Bellagio runs every 30 to 60 minutes (75 minutes slow service, 45 minutes by hydrofoil). The Varenna to Bellagio crossing is 15 minutes and runs frequently. Car ferries connect Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio every 20 minutes in season. Trains reach Como from Milan in 35 minutes and Varenna from Milan in 55 minutes. The main gaps are Tremezzo and the small western shore villages, which need a bus or ferry.

What is the best time of year to visit Lake Como?

Late April and May are the best months. Villa Carlotta's gardens peak in late April with rhododendrons and azaleas. Temperatures sit around 18 to 22 degrees Celsius and crowds are manageable. September is the second best option: summer heat drops, school groups leave, and hotels cut prices by 20 to 30 percent. Avoid the second half of August entirely if crowds matter to you.

Is Lake Como expensive?

It depends entirely on where you stay. Bellagio and Tremezzo run 150 to 400 dollars per night for a decent room. Como town offers solid options from 90 to 130 dollars and Menaggio from 90 to 170 dollars. Restaurants range from 15 to 25 euros for a pasta and drink at a local trattoria to 60 euros per person at lakefront terraces. If you are on a budget, base yourself in Como town, use the ferry for day trips, and avoid eating anywhere with a tablecloth visible from the water.
