Where to Stay in Lassen Volcanic National Park

Four base towns, four very different trips. Pick by which entrance you want and how much driving you'll tolerate at sunrise.

Mineral

Closest beds to the southwest entrance

Mid-range $140-$240/night

Mineral is a tiny crossroads on Highway 36, basically a gas station, the historic Mineral Lodge, and a handful of cabins tucked under the pines. The pull is location. You're 5 minutes from the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center and the trailheads for Bumpass Hell and Lassen Peak. Sulphur Works is the first hydrothermal stop you hit driving in. Don't expect dining options. The lodge restaurant is it, and it closes early. Stock up on groceries in Red Bluff or Chester before you arrive. Cell service is spotty on Verizon, dead on most others. Bring a paper map.

Best for
First-time visitors who want morning trail access without long drives
Walk times
  • Mineral Lodge restaurant 2 min
  • Highway 36 gas station 3 min
  • Mill Creek trailhead 15 min
Skip if: You need restaurant variety, reliable cell coverage, or anything resembling nightlife
Local tip: Park at the Bumpass Hell lot before 8am in July and August. By 10am cars line Highway 89 for half a mile and rangers turn people away.

Chester

The town with actual restaurants

Mid-range $110-$220/night

Chester sits on the north shore of Lake Almanor, about 30 minutes from the southwest park entrance via Highway 36. It's the only base with a real grocery store (Holiday Market on Main Street), proper coffee at Cravings, and dinner spots like Kopper Kettle Cafe and Pine Shack Frosty. Lodging ranges from the historic Bidwell House B&B to lakeside cabins on Almanor Drive. Use Chester if you want park days plus lake time. Rent a kayak at Lake Almanor West or fish for browns at the Hamilton Branch. The drive into the park climbs through Childs Meadows and is gorgeous at sunrise. Just commit to the 30 minutes each way.

Best for
Familieslonger staysanyone who wants real meals after hiking
Walk times
  • Holiday Market 5 min
  • Kopper Kettle Cafe 4 min
  • Lake Almanor public beach 10 min
Skip if: You're chasing first light at the trailheads every day
Local tip: Skip the Highway 36 route into the park on summer afternoons. Take Warner Valley Road from Chester to the Drakesbad area instead. Way less traffic and you hit the Devils Kitchen trailhead direct.

Shingletown

Northwest entrance base with Redding access

Mid-range $95-$180/night

Shingletown is a stretched-out community on Highway 44 between Redding and the park's northwest entrance. Lodging is mostly vacation rentals and a few small motels like the Weston House. The advantage is access to Manzanita Lake, the most photographed spot in the park, plus the Cinder Cone and Butte Lake on the park's quieter east side. You're also 35 minutes from Redding if someone in the group wants to bail on hiking and hit Sundial Bridge or a real grocery store. Shingletown itself has a pizza place, a market, and not much else. The drive on Highway 44 is straightforward but watch for deer at dusk.

Best for
Photographers shooting Manzanita Lake at sunrisebudget travelers
Walk times
  • Shingletown Market 8 min
  • Weston House 5 min
  • Highway 44 junction 10 min
Skip if: You want walkable dining or southwest park trails like Bumpass Hell
Local tip: Manzanita Lake reflections are best 30 minutes after sunrise, not at sunrise itself. The wind picks up by 9am and kills the mirror surface. Park at the boat launch, not the campground lot.

Old Station

Quiet Hat Creek base for the north entrance

Mid-range $105-$190/night

Old Station is a wide spot on Highway 44 where Hat Creek crosses, about 15 minutes from the park's northwest entrance. Lodging means JJ's Cafe and Cabins, the Hat Creek Resort, or Forest Service campgrounds at Cave Campground and Hat Creek. Trout fishing on the Hat Creek wild trout section is the local draw. You're also 10 minutes from Subway Cave, a lava tube you can walk through with a flashlight. The drive to Manzanita Lake takes 25 minutes via Highway 44 east. Food is limited to JJ's Cafe (open for breakfast and lunch, closed Tuesdays) and the Old Station Fill-Up gas station deli. Cell service on AT&T works at the Hat Creek Rim viewpoint, nowhere else.

Best for
Anglersanyone combining Lassen with Burney Falls or Mount Shasta
Walk times
  • JJ's Cafe 3 min
  • Hat Creek fishing access 6 min
  • Old Station Fill-Up 4 min
Skip if: You want to base for southwest park hikes like Lassen Peak or Bumpass Hell
Local tip: Hat Creek Rim Vista is 4 miles south on Highway 44. Pull off at the marked viewpoint after dark in August for the Milky Way over Mount Lassen. Almost zero light pollution and it's one of the best dark sky spots in northern California.

Which entrance should I use for Lassen?

Depends on what you want to see. The southwest entrance off Highway 89 puts you closest to Bumpass Hell, Lassen Peak trail, and Sulphur Works. Mineral and Chester are the bases for that side. The northwest entrance leads to Manzanita Lake, the Devastated Area, and Summit Lake, with Shingletown and Old Station as bases. The road through the park (Highway 89) connects both entrances but takes about 45 minutes end to end with stops.

When does the park road open?

The main road through the park typically opens late May or early June after snowplows clear it, and closes with the first heavy snow in October or November. In 2025 it opened June 11. Call the park at 530-595-4480 before booking shoulder season trips. The southwest entrance and Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center stay open year round, but you can only drive a few miles in during winter.

Is Drakesbad Guest Ranch worth it?

Yes if you can get a reservation, which is the hard part. The ranch is inside the park in Warner Valley, has a hot springs pool fed by geothermal water, and includes meals. Rates run around $340 per person per night. Book a year ahead for summer 2026 dates. The road in is rough gravel for the last 3 miles and not great for low cars. If Drakesbad is full, Chester is the closest alternative for that southeast corner of the park.

Can I see Lassen in one day?

You can drive Highway 89 through the park in 3 to 4 hours with stops at Sulphur Works, Bumpass Hell viewpoint, Summit Lake, and Manzanita Lake. That gets you the highlights but no real hiking. To do Bumpass Hell trail (3 miles round trip) plus Lassen Peak summit (5 miles, 2000 feet up) you need 2 full days minimum. Stay in Mineral for those, then move to Manzanita Lake for the north side.
