Funchal Old Town (Zona Velha)

Best for first-timers who want everything walkable

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Zona Velha is the most livable part of Funchal. Rua de Santa Maria runs the length of it, lined with painted doors and wine bars open until midnight. The Mercado dos Lavradores is a 10-minute walk north. You can reach the Monte cable car in 8 minutes on foot. Most hotels sit between Rua Dom Carlos I and the marina promenade. Restaurants here serve espetada and poncha without tourist markups. Parking is a nightmare so skip the rental car. Evenings get noisy on weekends near the lower harbor bars. One block uphill and it quiets completely. Budget to mid-range rooms dominate.

Local tip: Book a room above the second floor on Rua de Santa Maria for street views without the bar noise hitting you at 1am.

Lido / Estrada Monumental

Hotel strip with the best sea pools on the island

Mid-range $120-$350/night

Estrada Monumental is where most large resort hotels sit, stretching west from central Funchal toward the Lido complex. The public Lido sea pool costs under $5 and beats every hotel pool on the strip. Rua do Gorgulho connects to the clifftop promenade running 3 kilometers toward Camara de Lobos. This is the most convenient area for families: supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants sit within 200 meters of any hotel entrance. Sandy beaches barely exist on Madeira, so sea pools replace them here entirely. Expect consistent afternoon wind on upper floors facing the Atlantic. Old Town is 25 minutes on foot or a $6 taxi.

Local tip: Complexo Balnear do Lido beats any hotel pool and costs almost nothing. Go before 9am to get a sun lounger before tour groups arrive.

Camara de Lobos

Churchill painted the harbor here twice. Prices stayed low anyway.

Budget $70-$150/night

Winston Churchill painted this fishing village harbor twice in the 1950s. That detail still sells it, and the harbor still earns it. Camara de Lobos sits 9 kilometers west of Funchal, reachable by bus 2 or a $12 taxi. Rua Joao de Deus wraps around the harbor where painted fishing boats bob next to drying nets. Three good restaurants face the harbor square and one craft beer bar sits halfway up Rua Dr. Joao Abel de Freitas. Cabo Girao, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs with a glass-floored skywalk, is 10 minutes by car. Accommodation runs mostly guesthouses and apartments under 20 rooms.

Best for

Walk times
  • Camara de Lobos Harbor 2 min
  • Cabo Girao viewpoint (drive) 10 min
  • Funchal by bus 2 30 min
Skip if: You want a pool, spa, or easy walking access to Funchal nightlife
Local tip: The harbor viewpoint at sunset is free and better than any paid attraction on the island. Arrive 20 minutes early to claim the railing spot before tour groups.

Calheta

The only real sandy beach on Madeira plus a sunnier microclimate

Mid-range $100-$280/night

Calheta has the one thing most of Madeira lacks: a sandy beach, built in 2003 with sand imported from Morocco. It works well. The Calheta marina sits directly behind it with a cluster of restaurants on Rua do Porto. The west coast receives significantly more sun than Funchal between November and February, which matters if you visit in winter. Paúl do Mar, a surf village 6 kilometers further west, is a 10-minute drive. Hotels here are fewer but newer, mostly apartment-style with kitchens. Levada walks around Rabacal and Paúl da Serra start within 20 minutes by car. A rental car is not optional here.

Best for
Beach seekerswinter sun travelershikers using the west as a base
Walk times
  • Calheta Beach 3 min
  • Calheta Marina 5 min
  • Paul do Mar surf village (drive) 10 min
Skip if: You do not have a rental car or want to be within walking distance of Funchal
Local tip: The beach fills fast on weekends from April through October. Book accommodation with a parking spot included or you will walk 15 minutes from the nearest lot.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Madeira?

Funchal Old Town is the right call for a first visit. You are 5 minutes from the marina, 10 minutes from Mercado dos Lavradores, and 8 minutes from the Monte cable car on foot. Hotels run $80 to $200 a night. The food scene on Rua de Santa Maria alone justifies the location. Skip the north coast for a first trip.

Which area of Madeira has a real beach?

Calheta is the only area with a proper sandy beach. The sand was imported from Morocco in 2003 and holds up well. The rest of Madeira is volcanic coastline. Lido in Funchal has the best public sea pools if you prefer staying closer to the capital, entry under $5.

Is Camara de Lobos worth staying in instead of Funchal?

Yes, if you want lower prices and genuine local atmosphere. Guesthouses start around $70 a night. Funchal is 9 kilometers east via bus 2 or a $12 taxi. The harbor is genuinely beautiful, the village has its own restaurants, and you avoid the resort-hotel noise entirely. A rental car helps but is not required.

Which part of Madeira has the best weather in winter?

Calheta and the southwest coast get the most sun between November and March. Funchal can be overcast and wet while the west coast stays completely clear the same day. If you visit January through February, basing yourself in Calheta gives a real weather advantage worth the extra drive to reach Funchal.
