Maroon Bells has zero on-site hotels. Your base town determines how your whole trip goes. Here are the four areas that work, ranked by convenience.

Downtown Aspen

Closest town, most convenient, luxury prices

Downtown Aspen sits 10 miles from the Maroon Bells parking area on Maroon Creek Road. Hotels line Main Street, Cooper Avenue, and Durant Avenue within a few blocks of each other. The RFTA Maroon Bells Express bus departs from Rubey Park Transit Center on Durant Avenue, one block from most hotels. Summer reservations fill by April. After your hike, restaurants on Hyman Avenue and the gondola on Ajax Mountain are walkable from any downtown property. Expect $350 per night minimum in July and August. Book both your hotel and the RFTA bus at the same time.

Resort base 12 miles out, better rates than Aspen

Mid-range prices, 22 miles out, RFTA bus access

Basalt sits 22 miles from Maroon Bells at the confluence of the Frying Pan and Roaring Fork rivers on Highway 82. Midland Avenue and Two Rivers Road hold most lodging, from motels to vacation rentals. The RFTA regional bus runs from Basalt Transit Center on Midland Avenue into Aspen in 40 minutes, where you transfer to the Maroon Bells Express at Rubey Park. Total transit from Basalt to Maroon Bells runs about 75 minutes each way. The Frying Pan River draws fly fishers, and breakfast spots on Midland Avenue open early enough to fuel a morning hike.

Cheapest option, 30 miles out, genuine small-town Colorado

Carbondale sits 30 miles from Maroon Bells on Highway 82 at the base of Mount Sopris. Main Street and Colorado Avenue hold motels, inns, and vacation rentals starting under $100 per night. The RFTA bus from Carbondale to Aspen takes 55 minutes with a transfer at Rubey Park for the Maroon Bells Express. Drive time to Aspen Highlands is 40 minutes if you prefer one less bus transfer. Crystal River flows through town, and the arts scene on 4th Street gives Carbondale an unpretentious character you will not find in Aspen. Plan your day around the 5pm RFTA return.

Can you stay overnight at Maroon Bells?

No hotels exist at Maroon Bells. The scenic area has primitive campgrounds: Silver Bell, Silver Queen, and Maroon Lake campgrounds, all bookable at recreation.gov. Reservations open in spring and sell out within hours. If you miss the window, Aspen is the closest base at 10 miles, with the RFTA Express bus running from Rubey Park on Durant Avenue.

How early do you need to arrive at Maroon Bells to avoid crowds?

The vehicle reservation system activates at 8am daily in summer. To beat crowds, arrive before 8am when the gate opens without a reservation for a $10 entry fee. From Aspen, that means leaving your hotel by 7am. Most photographers target 6:30am at Maroon Lake for still water and golden light on the Bells with almost no other visitors.

Is the shuttle to Maroon Bells free?

No. The RFTA Maroon Bells Express from Aspen Highlands costs $8 round trip per adult as of 2024. It runs late June through mid-October, roughly 8am to 5pm. Parking at Aspen Highlands base is free.
