Downtown

The lakefront base camp

Mid-range $140-$260/night

Stay between Wisconsin Avenue and Juneau Park if it's your first trip. You're a 10-minute walk from the Milwaukee Art Museum's Calatrava wing, the RiverWalk runs right through it, and the Fiserv Forum sits at the north end on Juneau. Old World Third Street has the German halls (Mader's, Old German Beer Hall) and Usinger's sausage shop. The Hop streetcar is free and loops through the whole grid. Skip rooms north of McKinley if you want quiet at night, the bar block on Water Street between Wells and Juneau gets loud Thursday through Saturday.

Historic Third Ward

Brick warehouses and the best food in the city

Mid-range $170-$310/night

Bounded by I-794, the river, and Jackson Street, this is the converted warehouse district south of downtown. The Milwaukee Public Market on East St. Paul is the anchor. Around it you've got Onesto, Centro Cafe, and Morel within four blocks. Broadway Theatre Center hosts the Rep's smaller shows. Saturday mornings the Riverwalk fills with people heading to the Public Market for breakfast. Rooms here run higher than downtown but you eat better and walk less. Avoid the stretch right under the freeway on East Clybourn, it echoes and there's nothing open after 9.

Walker's Point

Craft beer, distilleries, and old industrial bones

Mid-range $130-$220/night

Across the Sixth Street viaduct from downtown, Walker's Point is where the breweries and distilleries cluster. Great Lakes Distillery, Central Standard, and Twisted Path are all within a few blocks of National Avenue. Crazy Water and La Merenda anchor the food scene. The neighborhood is grittier than Third Ward, more concrete and less polished, but rooms cost less and the bars stay open later. East National between First and Sixth is the active block. Skip anything west of 6th Street after dark, it gets quiet and poorly lit.

Bay View

Where Milwaukeeans actually live

Mid-range $110-$180/night

Two miles south of downtown along Kinnickinnic Avenue, Bay View is the residential pick. KK runs the spine and you'll find Goodkind, Odd Duck, and Anodyne Coffee along it between Lincoln and Russell. South Shore Park has the best lakefront beach in the city, and the Sunday farmer's market June through October is locals-only good. Hotels are limited (a couple of small inns and Airbnbs do most of the volume) but rates run 30 percent below downtown. Bus 15 connects to downtown in 20 minutes, or it's a 7-minute drive. Avoid the section north of Bay Street near the freeway.

What's the best neighborhood in Milwaukee for first-time visitors?

Downtown between Wisconsin Avenue and Juneau Park. You're 10 minutes from the Art Museum, on The Hop streetcar line (free), and a 12-minute walk to the Public Market. Expect $140 to $260 a night.

Where should I stay in Milwaukee for nightlife?

Walker's Point on East National Avenue between First and Sixth Streets. Three distilleries, six craft cocktail bars, and rooms run $130 to $220. Stay east of 6th Street and you can walk everywhere.

Is Bay View safe for tourists?

Yes, the Kinnickinnic Avenue corridor between Lincoln and Russell is residential and well-lit. Avoid the blocks north of Bay Street near the freeway. Bus 15 to downtown takes 20 minutes.

Which Milwaukee neighborhoods should I avoid?

Skip the area north of McKinley downtown if you want quiet, west of 6th Street in Walker's Point after dark, and any motel cluster along South 27th Street near the airport. The airport hotels save you $40 but you'll spend it on Ubers.
