Downtown Minneapolis

Central, convenient, and close to everything

Mid-range $130-$280/night

Downtown puts you steps from Nicollet Mall, the city's main pedestrian shopping street, and within 10 minutes of both Target Field and US Bank Stadium. The skyway system connects 80 city blocks, so you can move around in January without stepping outside. Hotels cluster along Marquette Ave and 7th Street S. The best options sit between 3rd and 10th Street. It is not the most charming neighborhood, but the logistics are unbeatable. The IDS Crystal Court and Grain Exchange building give it some architectural personality. Expect chain hotels, solid business amenities, and sharp weekend rate drops.

Walk times
  • Nicollet Mall 2 min
  • Target Field 8 min
  • US Bank Stadium 12 min
Skip if: You want a local neighborhood feel or walkable bars and restaurants after 10pm
Local tip: The 2nd Ave N corridor has far better food than anything near Nicollet Mall. Walk 6 blocks to Butcher and the Boar on Hennepin Ave instead of settling for lobby dining.

North Loop

Minneapolis's coolest neighborhood, by a wide margin

Mid-range $150-$300/night

North Loop occupies reclaimed warehouse buildings along Washington Ave N and 1st Ave N. The three-block corridor between 3rd Ave N and 6th Ave N holds more worthwhile restaurants per block than anywhere else in the city. Spoon and Stable on Washington Ave, Demi on 1st St N, and Young Joni on 2nd St NE are all within a 12-minute walk. The Hewing Hotel on 1st St N is the best boutique stay in Minneapolis. Target Field anchors the southern edge, which means Twins game nights bring serious crowds. Avoid booking on game nights unless street noise until midnight sounds fine.

Walk times
  • Target Field 5 min
  • Nicollet Mall 15 min
  • First Ave music venue 10 min
Skip if: You have a very early flight and need quick highway access without navigating city traffic
Local tip: Park once and walk the whole neighborhood. Ramps along 1st Ave N run $10-15 flat on weekends. The entire North Loop is about 6 square walkable blocks.

Uptown

The lakeside neighborhood with the best summer energy

Mid-range $90-$180/night

Uptown radiates from the Lyn-Lake intersection at Lyndale Ave S and Lake Street W. Bde Maka Ska is a 5-minute walk south and the Chain of Lakes trail starts there, connecting 8 miles of car-free paths. Hennepin Ave between 26th and 32nd Street has the densest bar and restaurant strip outside North Loop. Hotel options are limited but Ampersand Suites on Hennepin Ave and numerous vacation rentals fill the gap. It skews younger and louder on weekends near the Uptown Theatre on Hennepin Ave. Winter here is genuinely bleak without the lake activity. Come in June.

Best for
Outdoor enthusiastsyounger travelersanyone visiting June through August
Walk times
  • Bde Maka Ska 5 min
  • Chain of Lakes trailhead 7 min
  • Uptown Theatre 3 min
Skip if: You need to commute downtown for meetings every day. The gap means a $15-20 Lyft or 25-minute bus each way.
Local tip: Book in Lyn-Lake specifically, not just anywhere labeled Uptown. The blocks around Lyndale and Lake Street have better food options and quieter streets than the Hennepin Ave bar strip two blocks north.

Northeast Minneapolis

Art studios, breweries, and the city's best brunch at lower prices

Mid-range $80-$150/night

Northeast clusters around Central Ave NE and 13th Ave NE with the Mississippi riverfront as its western edge. The Grain Belt Brewery complex on Marshall St NE anchors a neighborhood that holds over 20 breweries within a single mile. The Northeast Minneapolis Arts District runs open studio events the first Friday of each month. Main Street SE follows the river and connects to the Stone Arch Bridge in 12 minutes on foot. Hotels are scarce here. Most visitors use vacation rentals near 2nd St NE or boutique properties just off Central Ave. Rates run 30 to 40 percent below North Loop for a comparable local experience.

Best for
Art loverscraft beer fansbudget travelers who want genuine local character
Walk times
  • Stone Arch Bridge 12 min
  • Grain Belt Brewery 6 min
  • Downtown Minneapolis 25 min
Skip if: You have multiple downtown commitments each day. The 25-minute walk or $12 Lyft adds up fast across a full trip.
Local tip: Northeast open studios happen the first Friday of each month from 6 to 10pm across the Arts District. If your dates align, it is the best free experience in Minneapolis.

What is the best area to stay in Minneapolis for first-time visitors?

Downtown or North Loop. Downtown gives you the skyway system and easy access to every major attraction. North Loop is 15 minutes from Nicollet Mall but has far better food and a genuine neighborhood feel. Visiting in summer? North Loop wins. Attending a convention or have early meetings? Book downtown on Marquette Ave or 7th St S and save yourself the logistics.

Is it safe to walk around Minneapolis at night?

North Loop, the Downtown core near Nicollet Mall, and Uptown's main strips on Hennepin Ave are safe to walk at night. Avoid walking alone from Downtown into near-north residential areas past 10pm. The skyway system closes around 10pm on weekdays, so plan rideshares if you are out late and staying outside the Downtown core.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Minneapolis?

Northeast Minneapolis runs $80-150 per night and delivers more local character per dollar than anywhere else. Uptown is a close second at $90-180. If your itinerary requires daily downtown access, factor in Lyft costs before assuming either neighborhood saves you money overall.

When is the best time to visit Minneapolis?

June through August. Summer temperatures reach the low 80s°F, the Chain of Lakes is fully open, and outdoor patios appear across every neighborhood. Avoid January and February unless you are prepared for wind chills below -10°F. Fall from September through October is genuinely beautiful and runs 20 to 30 percent cheaper than peak summer rates.
