Downtown Moab

Walk to dinner, closest to everything

Mid-range $110-$260/night

Downtown Moab runs along Main Street (US-191) between Center Street and 400 North. You can walk from your hotel to Moab Brewery, Eddie McStiff's, and the Moab Information Center in under five minutes. The main drag is loud in peak season (March through October) but that is where all the gear shops, outfitters, and restaurants are concentrated. Hotels range from basic motels on Main to slicker boutique properties on 100 West. Parking is free. The Moab Giants dinosaur park is a five-minute drive north. If you need to roll out at 6am for an Arches sunrise permit, this is your base.

Best for
First-timersshort tripstravelers who want walkable dining without renting a car
Walk times
  • Moab Brewery on Main Street 3 min
  • Moab Information Center 5 min
  • Arches National Park entrance 10 min
Skip if: You want quiet nights. Main Street traffic and bar noise carry through thin motel walls until midnight in summer.
Local tip: Book a room on 100 West or 200 West, not directly on Main Street. One block back cuts the road noise by half and prices drop $20 per night.

North Moab / Arches Corridor

Three miles from the park gate, fewer crowds at night

Mid-range $95-$220/night

The strip along US-191 between Moab and the Arches entrance spans roughly two miles of hotels, campgrounds, and independent motels. Properties here sit next to the Colorado River on one side and the sandstone walls of Moab Canyon on the other. The Hampton Inn and Slickrock Campground both sit in this zone. You lose the restaurant walk but gain five extra minutes of sleep on timed-entry permit mornings. The Moab Giants park is a short stop. A handful of properties have direct canyon views. Expect more RVs and trailers sharing the road by 6am during spring and fall.

Best for
Arches-focused tripsearly risers with timed entry permitsfamilies with rental cars
Walk times
  • Arches National Park entrance gate 8 min
  • Moab Giants Dinosaur Park 4 min
  • Downtown Moab restaurants 12 min
Skip if: You want walkable dining. The nearest decent restaurant is a 10-minute drive south into downtown.
Local tip: Highway 128 (the Colorado River Scenic Byway) starts just north of this area. Ask your hotel about sunrise light conditions on that road before booking a guided tour. It is free.

Colorado Riverway

On the water, away from traffic, best views in Moab

Mid-range $160-$380/night

Kane Creek Boulevard and the stretch along the Colorado River north of downtown hold Moab's most scenic lodging. Red Cliffs Lodge sits 14 miles out on Highway 128, surrounded by sandstone walls and cottonwood groves. Closer in, the Hoodoo Moab puts the Colorado River 50 feet from your room. This corridor attracts glamping camps and upscale cabins. You need a car for everything including dinner. But watching the river change color at sunset from a private patio justifies the inconvenience. The Corona Arch trailhead off Kane Creek Boulevard and the Potash Road petroglyphs are minutes away by car.

Best for

Walk times
  • Corona Arch trailhead (Kane Creek Blvd) 7 min
  • Potash Road petroglyphs 10 min
  • Downtown Moab 15 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or doing multi-day trips that require early starts from a central location.
Local tip: Red Cliffs Lodge rents mountain bikes and has a small working winery on the property. On a rest day you never have to leave.

South Moab / Spanish Valley

Quietest option, best prices, good for longer stays

Budget $70-$150/night

Spanish Valley stretches south of downtown along US-191 toward Monticello. The neighborhood sits in a wide valley flanked by the Behind the Rocks wilderness area to the west and the La Sal Mountains to the east. Hotels here are mostly independent motels and budget chains. The Moab Rim trailhead starts at the edge of this zone. You are further from Arches (15 minutes north) but closer to the Needles district of Canyonlands if you are running multi-day itineraries. Walmart, grocery stores, and cheap gas are all in this corridor. Nights are genuinely quiet and prices run 20 to 30 percent below downtown for comparable rooms.

Best for
Budget travelersweek-long tripsCanyonlands Needles district visitors
Walk times
  • Moab Rim trailhead 6 min
  • Walmart and grocery stores 4 min
  • Downtown Moab restaurants 10 min
Skip if: You want to be close to Arches or want walkable neighborhoods. Everything here requires a car.
Local tip: The La Sal Mountain Loop Road starts near Spanish Valley. In summer when Arches hits 105F, this 60-mile drive climbs to 11,000 feet and stays in the 70s. Most visitors miss it entirely.

Where should I stay in Moab for Arches National Park?

North Moab, along US-191 between downtown and the park entrance, puts you 8 minutes from the gate. That matters when timed entry reservations open at 7am and the lot fills by 8:30am. The Hampton Inn in this corridor is a solid choice. Downtown works fine too but adds 5 minutes in peak spring and fall traffic.

Is downtown Moab worth the higher price?

Only if you plan to eat out every night or want to skip the rental car. The walkable strip on Main and Center Street gives you 15 restaurants within a 5-minute walk. If you have a car and cook some meals, South Moab saves you $40-60 per night for nearly identical room quality.

How far is Moab from Canyonlands National Park?

Island in the Sky is 32 miles northwest of Moab, about 40 minutes by car. The Needles district is 75 miles south, closer to Spanish Valley. If Canyonlands is your main focus, South Moab cuts 15 minutes off your driving each way compared to staying downtown.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Moab?

Spanish Valley and South Moab along US-191 run 20 to 30 percent cheaper than downtown. Expect $70-110 per night for decent motel rooms versus $130-180 for similar quality downtown. Avoid booking anywhere in Moab during spring break (March) and peak fall color weeks (mid-October) without locking in rates early. Prices spike hard.
