Bozeman

Yellowstone's backyard with a college-town buzz

Mid-range $120-$250/night

Bozeman sits 90 miles north of Yellowstone's north entrance, making it the obvious base for park trips. Main Street runs through downtown with solid restaurants on Mendenhall Street and Black and Wilson. The Museum of the Rockies is walkable from most hotels near North 7th Avenue. Summer crowds are real, prices spike June through August, but shoulder season in May or September gives you open roads and 20 percent cheaper rooms. Bridger Bowl ski area is 16 miles out. Book near the north end of North 7th for easy I-90 access without downtown parking headaches.

Whitefish

Glacier's front porch with a real ski town feel

Mid-range $100-$300/night

Whitefish is 25 miles from Glacier National Park's west entrance at Apgar Village, which makes it the top choice for Glacier trips. Central Avenue downtown has grocery stores, gear shops, and restaurants within a five-block stretch. Whitefish Mountain Resort sits 7 miles up Big Mountain Road with ski-in lodging if you are there in winter. The Whitefish Trail network starts near town. Summer reservations disappear by March for peak season. Baker Avenue has the most walkable hotel cluster. Avoid properties on US-93 south of town unless you have a car since it adds 10 minutes to everything.

Missoula

College town on the Clark Fork River, cheapest western option

Mid-range $90-$170/night

Missoula sits at the confluence of three rivers and gives you easy access to five mountain ranges within an hour. The University of Montana campus borders the Clark Fork River, and Higgins Avenue bisects the walkable downtown. Caras Park hosts farmers markets and free concerts from May through September. Front Street and Higgins Avenue have bookstores, coffee shops, and 30 plus restaurants within six blocks. Glacier is 2.5 hours north, Yellowstone is 3.5 hours east. Hotel prices run 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Bozeman for comparable rooms. Avoid game weekends at the university unless you booked three months out.

Walk times
  • Higgins Avenue dining 6 min
  • University of Montana campus 12 min
  • Clark Fork Riverfront Trail 4 min

Billings

Eastern Montana's hub, most affordable and most overlooked

Mid-range $80-$150/night

Billings is Montana's largest city but rarely the first choice for tourists, which keeps prices honest. The Rimrocks sandstone cliffs above downtown are free to walk and give you views of the Yellowstone River valley. Montana Avenue has the best stretch of restaurants including several locally-owned spots that have run for 20-plus years. The airport is Montana's busiest and cheapest to fly into. Little Bighorn Battlefield is 65 miles southeast on I-90. Yellowstone's east entrance is 130 miles away. The North Park neighborhood near 24th Street West has newer hotels at lower rates than downtown. Summer heat is real, 90 degrees in July is normal.

Walk times
  • Rimrocks overlook 20 min
  • Montana Avenue restaurants 8 min
  • Billings Logan International Airport 10 min
Skip if: You want walkable mountain scenery outside your hotel window

Where should I stay in Montana for Yellowstone?

Bozeman is the best base for Yellowstone. It sits 90 miles from the north entrance and has the most flights, most dining options, and best road conditions year-round. West Yellowstone (just inside the park border) is closer at 50 miles from the south entrance but has very limited lodging and sells out by February.

Where should I stay in Montana for Glacier National Park?

Whitefish is the top pick, 25 miles from Glacier's west entrance at Apgar. Kalispell is 10 miles closer to the park entrance but has less character. If you are visiting the east side of Glacier around St. Mary and Many Glacier, stay in Browning or Great Falls, not Whitefish.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Montana?

Billings consistently runs 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Bozeman for the same hotel quality. Missoula is the second cheapest. Both are real cities with decent dining and direct flights, not just highway stops. Expect $80 to $120 per night in shoulder season.

When is the best time to visit Montana?

Late May and September are the sweet spots. Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road opens by late May, crowds are half of July's, and hotel rates drop 25 to 35 percent compared to peak summer. September brings fall colors, cooler temps, and zero wait times at park entrances. July and August are the busiest months with the highest prices.
