Inside the Park (The View Hotel)

Wake up to the Mittens. Nothing else compares.

Luxury $200-$350/night

There is exactly one hotel inside Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park: The View Hotel, off US-163 about 4 miles north of the Arizona-Utah border. Step outside and the West and East Mitten Buttes are right there, turning orange at sunrise. The observation deck sits 100 yards from your room. No street grid here, just the single access road into the park. Book 3 to 6 months out for summer. Rates spike above $300 in peak season, but the sunrise from your balcony is genuinely hard to put a price on. Dinner is at the on-site View Restaurant. That is your only option on property.

Best for
First-timers who want sunrise photos and the full park experience without driving back through the dark
Walk times
  • West Mitten Butte viewpoint 2 min
  • Tribal Park Visitor Center 5 min
  • Scenic Drive entrance gate 8 min
Skip if: You are on a budget or could not book 3 months ahead. Availability is tight and prices reflect the monopoly.
Local tip: Rooms 201 and 202 face the Mittens directly. Request these when booking. The restaurant breakfast opens at 7am, giving you time to eat before tour groups arrive at 8.

Kayenta, AZ

The nearest real town. Chain hotels, Navajo food, and a 25-minute drive to the park.

Mid-range $130-$230/night

Kayenta sits at the junction of US-160 and US-163, about 20 miles south of the park entrance. It is the closest town with multiple hotels: Hampton Inn Kayenta on US-163 and Holiday Inn Kayenta a mile north on the same road. The local Bashas grocery is on US-160. The Burger King on US-163 is famous for Navajo Tacos on fry bread. Do not miss Amigo Cafe on US-160 for green chile stew. Rooms run $130 to $230 depending on season. It is not scenic from the parking lot, but you are well-fed and rested for the morning drive up.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelers who want reliable chain hotels and multiple dining options close by
Walk times
  • Hampton Inn to Burger King (Navajo Taco) 8 min
  • Hampton Inn to Bashas grocery 12 min
  • Drive to Monument Valley park entrance 25 min
Skip if: You want any atmospheric or scenic setting. Kayenta is utilitarian strip development along a highway.
Local tip: The Hampton Inn fills up faster than the Holiday Inn because it is newer. Book either and you are fine. Gas up in Kayenta before entering the park since there is no fuel inside the tribal park.

Mexican Hat, UT

Small river town, 27 miles north, with genuine road-trip character.

Mid-range $80-$140/night

Mexican Hat is a tiny settlement on the San Juan River along US-163, about 27 miles north of the park entrance. The San Juan Inn sits right on the river with views of the namesake Mexican Hat rock formation above the road. The Swinging Steak restaurant nearby is the main dinner option in town. It is quiet, genuinely remote, and has a certain 1970s road-trip feel that Kayenta completely lacks. The rock formation itself is a 15-minute walk from the inn along US-163. Rooms are $80 to $140, making it the budget option that still has personality. You will drive 30 minutes south to reach the park.

Best for
Road trippers combining Monument Valley with the San Juan River corridor or Valley of the Gods
Walk times
  • San Juan Inn to river bank 3 min
  • San Juan Inn to Mexican Hat rock viewpoint 15 min
  • Drive to Monument Valley park entrance 30 min
Skip if: You want more than one restaurant option or need reliable cell service. Mexican Hat is genuinely small.
Local tip: The Swinging Steak gets packed by 7pm. Eat early or expect a wait. The San Juan River here is calm enough for a morning walk along the bank before driving south.

Bluff, UT

The arty, comfortable base camp 55 miles north.

Mid-range $100-$180/night

Bluff is a small arts community on the San Juan River at the junction of US-191 and US-163, about 55 miles north of Monument Valley. Desert Rose Inn on US-191 is the main hotel, with 30 clean rooms and mature cottonwood trees in the courtyard. Twin Rocks Cafe next to the sandstone towers on US-191 is the best restaurant in the region. Cow Canyon Trading Post on US-163 carries genuine Navajo and Ute Mountain Ute pottery. The town has two coffee shops and a real sense of community. The drive down US-163 to Monument Valley is stunning, passing the Valley of the Gods turnoff along the way.

Best for
Travelers combining Monument Valley with Bears Ears National MonumentCedar Mesaor Canyonlands
Walk times
  • Desert Rose Inn to Twin Rocks Cafe 10 min
  • Desert Rose Inn to San Juan River 8 min
  • Drive to Monument Valley park entrance 65 min
Skip if: Your entire trip is Monument Valley only. The 65-minute drive each way eats significantly into park time.
Local tip: The road from Bluff down US-163 passes Valley of the Gods, a free BLM area with similar geology and zero crowds. Stop here before or after Monument Valley. It is 10 minutes off-route.

Is it worth staying inside Monument Valley Tribal Park?

Yes, if you can get a room. The View Hotel is the only property inside the park, and waking up 100 yards from the Mittens at sunrise is a legitimately different experience than driving in from Kayenta. Book 3 to 6 months out for peak season (April through October). Expect to pay $250 to $350 per night. If the hotel is sold out or over your budget, Kayenta is the next best option at around $150 per night.

How far is Kayenta from Monument Valley?

About 20 miles south on US-163, roughly 25 minutes by car. Kayenta is the nearest town with multiple hotels and restaurants. The Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn on US-163 are the most popular bases for visitors who did not book The View Hotel. Gas up in Kayenta before entering the park since there is no fuel available inside the tribal park.

What is the cheapest area to stay near Monument Valley?

Mexican Hat, UT, with rooms at the San Juan Inn running $80 to $140 per night. It is 27 miles north of the park on US-163, about a 30-minute drive. The setting is more atmospheric than Kayenta: a small river town with the famous Mexican Hat rock formation visible from the road. Bluff, UT is similarly priced at $100 to $180 but significantly farther at 55 miles.

Can you visit Monument Valley as a day trip?

Yes. If you are based in Page, AZ (about 90 minutes away) or Moab, UT (about 2.5 hours), day trips are common. The scenic drive is 17 miles and takes 2 to 3 hours. The park entrance fee is $20 per vehicle. In summer, arrive by 7am before temperatures exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit by midday. The Visitor Center opens at 8am.
