Ashford (Nisqually Gate)

The classic basecamp, 6 miles from the entrance

Mid-range $130-$260/night

Ashford sits on Highway 706 and is the only town that hugs the Nisqually Gate, the park's main year-round entrance. You get a Hobbit-style cluster of cabin rentals, the Copper Creek Inn for breakfast, and Wildberry Restaurant for Sherpa stew at dinner. Whittaker's Bunkhouse and the Nisqually Lodge are the two anchor stays. Cell service is patchy past Kernahan Road. Stock up at the small Ashford General Store before driving in. The drive to Paradise from here is 18 miles of switchbacks, about 45 minutes when traffic is light. Book a Nisqually-side stay if Paradise is your priority.

Packwood

Budget basecamp for the south side

Mid-range $95-$185/night

Packwood is 20 miles south of the Stevens Canyon entrance on Highway 12, and it runs cheaper than Ashford by $40 to $80 a night. The Cowlitz River Lodge and Crest Trail Lodge handle most of the inventory, and Cliff Droppers makes the burger you want after a Naches Peak loop. The town doubles as a gateway for Goat Rocks Wilderness and the PCT, so expect through-hikers in August. Blanton's Market is a real grocery store with a deli, which Ashford does not have. Drive time to Paradise via Stevens Canyon is roughly 50 minutes, and the road closes November through May.

Local tip: The Packwood Flea Market on Memorial and Labor Day weekends doubles room rates. Book three months out or move to White Pass.

Paradise (in-park lodging)

Sleep on the mountain, walk to the wildflowers

Luxury $220-$450/night

The Paradise Inn opened in 1917 and sits at 5,400 feet, right at the trailhead for Skyline Trail and Myrtle Falls. Staying inside the park means you wake up above the morning fog while day-trippers are still in line at Nisqually Gate. The lobby has two cedar-log fireplaces and the dining room serves a passable bourbon-glazed salmon. National Park Inn at Longmire is the year-round alternative at 2,700 feet. No TVs, no air conditioning, weak Wi-Fi, and Paradise Inn closes early October to mid-May. Reservations open 13 months out and sell through fast.

Best for
Sunrise photographerswildflower season (late July to early August)no-car travelers
Walk times
  • Skyline Trail trailhead 2 min
  • Myrtle Falls 8 min
  • Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center 4 min
Skip if: You need modern amenities, AC, or are visiting in winter (Paradise Inn is closed)
Local tip: Request a room in the original 1917 wing. The annex rooms are newer but lack the timber-frame character you came for.

Crystal Mountain and Sunrise side

Ski lifts in winter, gondola views in summer

Luxury $180-$380/night

Crystal Mountain Resort sits 6 miles outside the park's northeast corner and is Washington's largest ski area. The Alpine Inn and Crystal Hotels run the lodging, and the Mt. Rainier Gondola climbs to 6,872 feet for the best mountain view that does not require hiking. Greenwater is the closest grocery stop, 10 miles down Highway 410. The Sunrise entrance opens July through September only and is a 30-minute drive from Crystal. Staying here makes zero sense for Paradise visits, the drive is two hours each way. Book this side for ski trips December through April or Sunrise hikes in August.

  • Snorting Elk Cellar bar 5 min
  • Alpine Inn dining 2 min

Which gate should I use for Paradise?

Nisqually (southwest) is the main year-round entrance and the closest to Paradise at 18 miles. Stevens Canyon (south) reaches Paradise in summer only. Ashford is the right basecamp for Paradise trips.

Can I sleep inside the park?

Yes, two lodges. Paradise Inn is open mid-May through early October at 5,400 feet. National Park Inn at Longmire is open year-round at 2,700 feet. Both book up 8 to 13 months ahead for July and August.

Is Packwood worth it over Ashford?

Only if you are on a budget or visiting in summer. Packwood saves $40 to $80 per night and has a real grocery store, but Stevens Canyon Road closes November through May and adds 30 minutes to Paradise.

When does the timed entry reservation apply?

From late May through early September, vehicles entering Paradise Corridor between 7 AM and 3 PM need a timed reservation booked at recreation.gov. Stays inside the park (Paradise Inn, Longmire) bypass this requirement.
