Ashford

Closest to Paradise. The default base for most visitors.

Mid-range $120-$350/night

Ashford sits on Highway 706, roughly 6 miles from the Nisqually entrance. It's the launch pad for Paradise, the most visited section of the park at 5,400 feet. The main stretch is compact: Whittaker's Bunkhouse at the east end, Alexander's Country Inn at the village center, and Copper Creek Inn with its cabin clusters and small deli store. Cell service is weak throughout town. The road to Paradise gains 4,000 feet in 19 miles, so staying here buys you a trailhead start before the Paradise parking lot fills by 9am on summer weekends. National Park Inn inside the park sits 6 miles further east at Longmire.

Best for
First-time visitorshikers targeting Paradise and Skyline Trail
Walk times
  • miles to Nisqually entrance 6 min
  • miles to Paradise via Hwy 706 19 min
  • miles to Longmire inside the park 6 min
Skip if: You need reliable cell service, a grocery store, or full hotel amenities
Local tip: Book the Paradise Inn inside the park if you can get it. It sells out 6 months ahead for July weekends but puts you at 5,400 feet with zero morning commute.

Packwood

South-side access with real town infrastructure.

Mid-range $80-$190/night

Packwood on US-12 is 11 miles from the Stevens Canyon entrance and the closest base for Ohanapecosh, home to the Grove of the Patriarchs old-growth loop. Unlike Ashford, it has a real grocery store, gas stations, reliable cell service, and several diners along the main US-12 strip. Cowlitz River Lodge and a handful of budget motels line the road through town. The trade-off is position: you're on the south side, adding a 42-mile drive via Cayuse Pass to reach Paradise. Packwood earns its place if Ohanapecosh, the Tatoosh Range, or Goat Rocks Wilderness are your targets.

Best for
Budget travelershikers focused on Ohanapecosh and Grove of the Patriarchs
Walk times
  • miles to Stevens Canyon entrance 11 min
  • miles to Ohanapecosh visitor center 15 min
  • miles to Paradise via Cayuse Pass 42 min
Skip if: Paradise and Skyline Trail are your primary goals
Local tip: Ohanapecosh fills fast on July and August weekends. A Packwood base gets you there before day-trippers arriving by 10am from Yakima and the east side.

Enumclaw

North gateway with full-town amenities and Sunrise access.

Mid-range $100-$240/night

Enumclaw on SR-410 is the jump-off for Sunrise, the highest drivable point in the park at 6,400 feet, roughly 40 miles south. It's a real working town with a Safeway, multiple chain motels along the SR-410 corridor, and sit-down restaurants. Cole Street is the commercial center with a pharmacy, hardware store, and coffee shops. Enumclaw also serves Crystal Mountain ski area, 35 miles south on SR-410. The White River entrance is 33 miles from town. It's the best base if you need real-world amenities but want morning access to Sunrise before lots fill by 10am.

Best for
Familiesvisitors targeting SunriseCrystal Mountain ski and summer trips
Walk times
  • miles to White River entrance 33 min
  • miles to Sunrise visitor center 40 min
  • miles to Crystal Mountain Resort 35 min

Elbe

Budget highway stop 14 miles from the Nisqually gate.

Budget $65-$140/night

Elbe sits at the junction of Highway 7 and Highway 706, roughly 8 miles west of Ashford and 14 miles from the Nisqually entrance. Accommodation is small cabins and basic motels near the crossroads. The Rainier Scenic Railroad departs from Elbe in summer, running vintage steam trains through the foothills on weekends. A diner inside converted historic rail cars sits on the south side of the highway. There's a gas station and nothing else. But rates run $40-60 per night cheaper than Ashford for a comparable cabin, and the Nisqually gate is a 20-minute drive east on Highway 706.

Best for
Budget travelers needing a cheap overnight near the main entrance
Walk times
  • miles to Nisqually entrance 14 min
  • miles to Paradise visitor center 26 min
  • miles to Ashford for restaurants and supplies 8 min
Skip if: You want restaurants, Wi-Fi, or anything beyond a bed and a gas fill-up
Local tip: The rail car diner does solid breakfast. Get there before 8am on summer weekends or expect a 40-minute wait once tour groups arrive from Tacoma.

What is the closest town to Mt. Rainier?

Ashford is the closest town, 6 miles from the Nisqually entrance on Highway 706. If you want to sleep inside the park, Paradise Inn at 5,400 feet is the best option. It books out 6 to 9 months ahead for summer weekends. National Park Inn at Longmire, also inside the gate, is more available and still beats any outside base for early morning access.

Should I stay in Ashford or Packwood?

Stay in Ashford if Paradise and the Skyline Trail are your priorities. Stay in Packwood if you're targeting Ohanapecosh or Grove of the Patriarchs, or you need a grocery store and reliable cell service. Packwood runs $40-80 cheaper per night on average. The drive between them via US-12 and Highway 706 takes about 50 minutes through Randle and Packwood.

Is it worth staying inside Mt. Rainier National Park?

Yes, if you can book it. Paradise Inn at 5,400 feet puts you at the trailhead before parking fills. Summer mornings before 7am are a different experience from anything you get staying 20 miles outside. The rooms are basic and the 1916 lodge creaks, but the location is the point. National Park Inn at Longmire is easier to book and still inside the park. Reserve at recreation.gov.

When do roads to Sunrise and Paradise open for the season?

Paradise typically opens to vehicles in late May or early June. Sunrise Road, which climbs to 6,400 feet, usually opens in late June or early July. Both dates shift 2 to 3 weeks based on snowpack. Spring trips from Enumclaw risk finding Sunrise still closed. Check nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/road-status.htm before booking any trip in May, June, or early July.
