Where to Stay Near Mt Rushmore

Keystone sits at the foot of the monument on Highway 16A, and nothing else gets you there faster. Winter Street and Old Cemetery Road hold most of the lodging, with the 1880 Train depot and Big Thunder Gold Mine right in the middle of town. The main drag is Reuter Street, packed with souvenir shops and barbecue joints like Powder House Lodge. Rooms here cost more than Rapid City, but you can drive to the viewing terrace before the tour buses arrive at 9am. Avoid the cheapest motels on Highway 16 north of town. They look close on a map but add 15 minutes of switchbacks each way.

You are 18 minutes from Crazy Horse and 35 minutes from Rushmore via the scenic Needles Highway when it is open. Skip Custer in late October through April.
