Fayetteville

The climber and rafter capital. Best all-around base near the gorge.

Budget $0-$0/night

Fayetteville sits about 4 miles from the New River Gorge Bridge on WV-16. Bridge Street is the core: outfitters, cafes, and bars within a few blocks of each other. Court Street loops around the main square, where Pies and Pints draws post-hike crowds every evening. Most lodging clusters along Maple Avenue or in the wooded hills just outside town. You are 12 minutes from Canyon Rim Visitor Center and 15 minutes from the most popular climbing crags at Endless Wall. The town gets genuinely busy in October when Bridge Day draws 100,000 visitors. Book September through November at least 8 weeks out.

Best for
Rock climberswhitewater raftersand anyone wanting walkable dining after a long day on the trails
Walk times
  • Bridge Street restaurants and bars 5 min
  • Fayetteville outfitter row 8 min
  • Canyon Rim Visitor Center 12 min
Skip if: You want a chain hotel with a pool and loyalty points
Local tip: Park once on Court Street and walk everywhere. Fayetteville is compact. You do not need to move your car again until morning.

Lansing

Closest you can get to the gorge rim. Quiet, remote, and zero amenities.

Budget $0-$0/night

Lansing is a tiny community on WV-19, less than a mile from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center via Lansing Edmond Road. There is almost no town infrastructure here, just a handful of cabin rentals and small lodges perched above the river. The payoff is sheer proximity: step outside and you are essentially inside the national park. Grandview Road takes you to the southern section of the park in about 20 minutes. This is not a base for restaurant-hoppers. The nearest grocery store is back in Oak Hill, a 10-minute drive. Best for people who want maximum park time and minimum daily driving.

Best for
Hikers and nature lovers who want to wake up next to the gorge and spend all day on trails
Walk times
  • Canyon Rim Visitor Center 3 min
  • Long Point Trail trailhead 5 min
  • Fayetteville town center 10 min
Skip if: You need restaurants, bars, or any nightlife within walking distance
Local tip: Book Lansing cabins 3 to 4 months ahead for October weekends. Bridge Day fills every option within 30 miles.

Oak Hill

Practical and cheap. No charm, but solid value for a trail-focused trip.

Budget $0-$0/night

Oak Hill is a working West Virginia town on US-19, about 8 miles north of the park entrance. Main Avenue has a Walmart, gas stations, and fast-food chains covering the basics. Lodging runs 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Fayetteville. Oyler Avenue cuts through to the highway for quick morning departures. You will not walk anywhere interesting in the evenings, but if you are spending all day in the park anyway, Oak Hill is a sensible crash pad. Canyon Rim Visitor Center is about 15 minutes via WV-16 South. Fill the tank here before heading into the park area.

Best for
Budget travelers who plan to spend every daylight hour hiking and just need a clean bed
Walk times
  • Oak Hill Main Avenue dining 10 min
  • Canyon Rim Visitor Center 15 min
  • Fayetteville town center 10 min
Skip if: You want any atmosphere or a walkable evening worth remembering
Local tip: Gas prices near the park are higher. Fill up in Oak Hill every time. Grocery options here are also the best within range.

Beckley

Full amenities, 20 miles away. Right choice for families and road trippers.

Budget $0-$0/night

Beckley sits on I-64 and I-77 about 20 miles south of the park. Harper Road is the hotel corridor: Marriott, Hampton Inn, and Holiday Inn Express all within half a mile of each other. Robert C. Byrd Drive runs parallel with chain restaurants and a full Kroger grocery. You are trading proximity for consistency. Canyon Rim Visitor Center takes about 25 minutes on WV-19 North. Works well if you are combining New River Gorge with a broader Appalachian road trip, need airport access via Raleigh County Airport, or want reliable high-speed internet for remote work in the evenings.

Best for
Familiesbusiness travelersand road trippers needing chain hotel reliability and airport proximity
Walk times
  • Harper Road restaurants 5 min

What is the best town to stay in near New River Gorge National Park?

Fayetteville is the best base for most visitors. It sits 4 miles from the New River Gorge Bridge on WV-16, with walkable restaurants on Bridge Street and Court Street, and climbing outfitters a short walk away. Canyon Rim Visitor Center is 12 minutes by car. If you want to be even closer to the trails, cabin rentals in Lansing on Lansing Edmond Road put you under a mile from the rim with almost no drive time in the morning.

How far is Fayetteville from New River Gorge National Park?

Fayetteville is about 4 miles from the New River Gorge Bridge and roughly 12 minutes by car from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center via WV-16. It is the closest proper town with restaurants, bars, and a real range of lodging options. Bridge Day in October draws 100,000 visitors to the area, so book at least 8 weeks ahead if you are visiting in fall.

Is there lodging inside New River Gorge National Park?

There is no traditional lodging inside the park boundaries. The closest option is cabin rentals in Lansing, less than a mile from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center on Lansing Edmond Road. The park itself has two campgrounds: Grandview Campground in the south section and primitive sites near Thurmond. Both fill up quickly from June through October, and reservations through Recreation.gov are strongly recommended.

What is Bridge Day at New River Gorge and how does it affect hotels?

Bridge Day is held on the third Saturday of October every year. The New River Gorge Bridge, which spans 876 feet above the river, closes to traffic and opens for pedestrians. BASE jumpers leap from the structure legally, making it one of the largest extreme sports events in the US. Around 100,000 people attend. Every hotel within 30 miles sells out. Expect rates 2 to 3 times normal pricing in Fayetteville, Oak Hill, and Beckley during that weekend.
