Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Ninh Binh

Four areas, four very different trips. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend two hours a day on a scooter.

Tam Coc

The tourist heart with the best sunset views

Budget $15-$80/night

Tam Coc village along Dong Giua Street and the road to Hang Mua is where most travelers end up, and for good reason. You can walk to the Tam Coc boat pier in under 10 minutes, hike Mua Cave viewpoint at sunrise, and grab a beer at one of the rooftop bars on Hai Nham Street by 7pm. The downside: it gets loud after dark with karaoke from neighboring homestays, and prices on the main strip are double what locals pay. Stay one street back, on Hai Nham or near Thai Vi Temple, for a quieter night without losing the convenience.

Best for
First-timers who want everything within walking distance and don't mind a livelier evening
Walk times
  • Tam Coc Boat Pier 8 min
  • Hang Mua viewpoint 25 min
  • Bich Dong Pagoda 30 min
Skip if: You're a light sleeper or hate karaoke. The main strip is loud until 11pm in high season.
Local tip: Book a homestay with bicycles included. The ride between Tam Coc, Mua Cave, and Bich Dong is flat and takes 15 minutes each way.

Trang An

Cave boats and quiet rice paddies

Budget $20-$120/night

Trang An sits about 7km north of Tam Coc and feels like a different planet. The boat tour here goes through nine caves and lasts three hours, longer and more dramatic than Tam Coc. Accommodations cluster along the road from the Trang An boat dock toward Bai Dinh Pagoda, mostly small homestays with rice field views. There are no bars, almost no restaurants past 9pm, and the nearest ATM is back in Ninh Binh City. Bring cash. The trade-off is genuine quiet, sunrise views over limestone karsts you can see from your bed, and zero crowds before 8am.

Best for
Couplesphotographersand anyone who wants to wake up to limestone karsts instead of scooter horns
Walk times
  • Trang An boat pier 5 min
  • Bai Dinh Pagoda 40 min
  • Hoa Lu Ancient Capital 35 min
Skip if: You want walkable nightlife or restaurants. Past 9pm, the area is asleep.
Local tip: Take the boat route number 2 or 3, not number 1. Number 1 is the shortest and most crowded with day-trippers from Hanoi.

Ninh Binh City

Train station base for budget travelers

Budget $10-$40/night

Ninh Binh City itself, around Tran Hung Dao Street and Le Hong Phong Street, is where the train station and bus station sit. Most travelers skip the city, but if you're arriving late or leaving early on the night train to Hue, staying here saves a $10 taxi ride. Hotels along Le Hong Phong run $12 to $25 a night and are clean but generic. The city has a real Vietnamese feel with pho stalls open at 5am, banh mi carts on Tran Hung Dao, and a local market on Vo Thi Sau. You'll need a scooter or taxi to reach Tam Coc, about 9km south.

Best for
Train travelersbudget backpackersand anyone with one night before moving on
Walk times
  • Ninh Binh Train Station 5 min
  • Local market 10 min
  • Tam Coc (by scooter) 15 min
Skip if: You came to see karst landscapes and rice paddies. The city is concrete and motorbikes.
Local tip: Book a hotel that offers free scooter rental. Most on Le Hong Phong do, and a scooter is the only sensible way to reach the sights from here.

Bich Dong and Hang Mua area

The quiet alternative to Tam Coc

Budget $18-$70/night

The lanes around Bich Dong Pagoda and the back roads toward Hang Mua are where Tam Coc regulars upgrade to on their second visit. You're a 10-minute bike ride from the Tam Coc boat pier but a world away from the main strip noise. Homestays here are family-run, often with home-cooked dinners for $5 and bikes parked at the door. The road between Bich Dong and the Mua Cave entrance passes through working rice fields where farmers still cut by hand in May and September. There's no nightlife, but there's a small cluster of restaurants near the Bich Dong Pagoda parking area for dinner.

Best for
Returning visitorsfamiliesand anyone who wants Tam Coc convenience without the karaoke
Walk times
  • Bich Dong Pagoda 5 min
  • Hang Mua viewpoint 20 min
  • Tam Coc boat pier 25 min
Skip if: You don't have a scooter or bicycle. Walking everywhere from here gets old fast.
Local tip: Time your visit to Hang Mua for 4:30pm. You'll beat the sunset rush and still have light for the climb up the 500 stone steps.

How many days do I need in Ninh Binh?

Two nights minimum. Day one for a Trang An boat tour and Hoa Lu, day two for Tam Coc boats and Hang Mua viewpoint at sunset. Three nights lets you add Bai Dinh Pagoda and Cuc Phuong National Park without rushing.

Is it better to stay in Tam Coc or Trang An?

Tam Coc if it's your first visit and you want walkable food and bars. Trang An if you want quiet, longer cave boat rides, and rice field views from your room. The two areas are 7km apart, so a scooter lets you base in one and visit the other in 15 minutes.

Can I do Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi?

You can, but you'll regret it. The train from Hanoi takes 2.5 hours each way, and you'll only have time for one boat tour. Stay at least one night to see Hang Mua at sunset, when the day-trippers are gone and the light hits the karsts.

Do I need a scooter in Ninh Binh?

If you stay in Tam Coc village, you can walk or bike to most sights. From Trang An or Ninh Binh City, a scooter is essential. Rentals are $5 to $7 a day from almost any homestay, and the roads between sights are flat, paved, and easy for first-time riders.
