Bayeux

D-Day base camp with a medieval center

Mid-range $80-$190/night

Bayeux is the sharpest base for first-timers. Rue Saint-Martin runs through the center with crepe shops and cider bars. The Bayeux Tapestry Museum sits on Rue de Nesmond, 7 minutes on foot. The cathedral is visible from most streets. Utah and Omaha Beach are 30 minutes by car. Rue Saint-Patrice holds most mid-range hotels, quiet and walkable. Saturday market on Place Saint-Patrice sells Normand cheese and calvados direct from producers. Small enough to navigate without a car, historically dense enough to fill three days. Book 3 months ahead for May and June.

Rouen

Gothic cathedrals, Joan of Arc, and a real food scene

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Rouen is Normandy's capital and its most underrated overnight stop. The Gros-Horloge medieval clock arch stands on Rue du Gros-Horloge and anchors the old quarter. Monet painted the cathedral on Place de la Cathedrale 30 times from the same hotel window. Joan of Arc was executed at Place du Vieux-Marche, 7 minutes walk from central hotels. Rue Eau de Robec has the canal-side timber houses. Hotels cluster on Rue Saint-Nicolas and near the train station on Rue Jeanne d'Arc. Paris Saint-Lazare is 70 minutes by direct train. The restaurant scene is stronger than anywhere else in Normandy.

Honfleur

The most photographed harbor in Normandy

Mid-range $130-$340/night

Honfleur earns its reputation. The Vieux Bassin harbor on Quai Sainte-Catherine is ringed with tall slate-fronted 17th-century houses and genuinely stunning at dawn. Rue de la Ville and Rue Haute connect the harbor to Sainte-Catherine Church, the largest wooden church in France. Budget $130 minimum per night. The Pont de Normandie bridge frames the Seine estuary 5 minutes by car. Weekends from April through October fill up by 11am with day-trippers from Paris and Le Havre. Sunday through Thursday the town is completely different. Restaurants focus on sole meuniere, mussels, and local apple products.

Caen

Budget hub with the best WWII museum in Europe

Budget $65-$170/night

Caen gets passed over and that is a mistake. The Memorial de Caen on Esplanade General Eisenhower is widely considered Europe's finest WWII museum. Tram line 1 connects central hotels to the museum in 15 minutes for under 2 euros. William the Conqueror built the Chateau de Caen above Rue Ecuyrere. Hotels on Rue de Geole and Rue Guillaume le Conquerant run 20 to 30 percent below Bayeux prices for comparable rooms. The train station on Place de la Gare links to Paris Saint-Lazare in 2 hours and to Bayeux in 20 minutes. Practical, cheap, and genuinely interesting.

Walk times
  • Chateau de Caen, Rue Ecuyere entrance 8 min
  • Caen train station, Place de la Gare 10 min

What is the best area to stay in Normandy for D-Day beaches?

Bayeux. It sits 8 kilometers from Arromanches and 30 kilometers from Omaha Beach. Every major D-Day site including Utah, Gold, Juno, Sword, and Pointe du Hoc is within 45 minutes by car. The town has more hotels than the beach villages and far better restaurants. Book at least 3 months ahead for May and June.

Is Honfleur or Rouen better for a first visit to Normandy?

Depends what you want. Honfleur is smaller, prettier, and works well for one night. Rouen has more depth: three major historic sites, a proper food scene on Rue Saint-Nicolas, and a direct Paris train in 70 minutes. For a two-night Normandy stop, Rouen wins. For a romantic weekend with no agenda, Honfleur.

How far is Normandy from Paris and how do you get there?

Rouen is 70 minutes by direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare. Caen is 2 hours. Bayeux requires a change at Caen, adding 25 minutes. By car, Bayeux is 220 kilometers via A13 and A84, roughly 2.5 hours from central Paris in normal traffic. Trains are cheaper and faster for Rouen. A car is essential for the D-Day coast.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Normandy?

Caen. Hotels on Rue de Geole and around Place Courtonne run $65-100 per night, 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Bayeux for comparable quality. The Memorial de Caen museum is one tram stop from the center. Parking is easier and less expensive than any other Normandy base.
