Downtown Ojai

Walk everywhere, dog welcome at half the patios

Luxury $200-$380/night

Downtown Ojai runs along Ojai Avenue between Signal Street and Fox Street, a compact grid where leashed dogs move freely. Libbey Park sits one block south of Ojai Avenue and is the town's best morning walk: wide grass paths, mature oaks, almost no crowds before 9am. The Ojai Valley Trail picks up near Soule Park on the east end and runs 9.5 paved miles toward Ventura. Restaurants along Ojai Avenue, including Azu and Boccali's, have outdoor patios that welcome leashed dogs. Parking is easy on Signal Street. Hotels cost more here but the walkable access to trails and patios is unmatched anywhere else in the valley.

Best for
Visitors who want walkabilitydog-friendly restaurant patiosand trail access without a car
Walk times
  • Libbey Park: -walk from most hotels 4 min
  • Ojai Valley Trail east trailhead: -walk 12 min
  • Main shopping strip on Ojai Avenue: -walk 2 min
Skip if: You have a high-energy dog needing off-leash running. Downtown is leash-only everywhere.
Local tip: The grassy median on Ojai Avenue near Libbey Bowl is an underrated dog stop. Wide, shaded, and almost empty on weekday mornings.

Meiners Oaks

Affordable, local, and right on the river trail

Mid-range $130-$220/night

Meiners Oaks sits directly west of downtown, centered on El Roblar Drive and Villanova Road. It has a lived-in, local feel and prices noticeably lower than the Ojai Avenue corridor. The big draw for dog owners is direct access to the Ventura River Trail, a soft-surface path that runs 16 miles alongside the river. Enter near the intersection of El Roblar Drive and Highway 33 with no fee and no crowds before 8am. The trailhead lot on El Roblar holds about 20 cars. Grocery and coffee options sit within half a mile. Vacation rentals here run 30 to 40 percent cheaper than downtown, with larger yards on average.

Best for
Budget-conscious visitors and owners of active dogs who need real trail mileagenot park loops
Walk times
  • Ventura River Trail access: -walk 5 min
  • Meiners Oaks Grocery on El Roblar: -walk 6 min
  • Downtown Ojai via trail: -walk 20 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants and bars. Meiners Oaks has almost none. A car is needed for dinner.
Local tip: The river trail floods after heavy rain and stays muddy for days. Check the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy site before a long walk in winter.

East Ojai / Gridley Road

Quiet foothills, serious hiking, and very few tourists

Luxury $180-$320/night

East Ojai spreads along Gridley Road and the streets climbing toward the Topa Topa foothills, east of Soule Park Golf Course. It is almost entirely single-family homes and small ranches with almost none of the weekend crowds that fill downtown. The Shelf Road Trail starts at the end of Signal Street East and gives you five miles of maintained dirt path with the Topa Topa Bluffs directly overhead. Dogs must stay leashed. Gridley Road itself is a wide, low-traffic road good for long morning walks. Vacation rentals here often sit on half-acre or larger lots. A handful of properties allow dogs over 50 pounds without extra fees.

Best for
Owners of large or energetic dogs who want spacequiet nightsand direct trail access from the property
Walk times
  • Shelf Road trailhead: -drive or 25-minute walk from eastern Gridley 8 min
  • Soule Park green space: -walk 10 min
  • Downtown Ojai via Ojai Avenue: -drive 7 min
Skip if: You are visiting without a car. There is no walkable dining or shopping in this area.
Local tip: Gridley Trail proper starts higher up at around 1,600 feet. The lower road is fine for most dogs but the grade gets steep fast. Good for fit dogs, hard on seniors.

Upper Ojai / Highway 33 Corridor

True ranch country, creek swimming, and off-the-grid quiet

Mid-range $150-$280/night

Upper Ojai follows Highway 33 north past Wheeler Gorge through the Matilija Creek drainage into a valley that feels completely separate from town. Addresses run along Maricopa Highway and Old Creek Road. Most stays are vacation rentals on ranch properties with real acreage, and most explicitly allow dogs of all sizes at no extra charge. The Matilija Creek Trail starts near the campground at mile marker 11 on Highway 33 and runs four miles through a narrow canyon. Dogs allowed on leash. Wheeler Gorge Campground, 10 miles north, has fee day-use access with a creekside walking path. Cell signal is nearly nonexistent throughout the corridor.

Best for
Dog owners who want private fenced acreagecreek swimming accessand zero neighbors within earshot
Walk times
  • Matilija Creek Trail trailhead: -drive from most rentals 5 min
  • Wheeler Gorge creek access: -drive north 15 min
  • Downtown Ojai: -drive south 20 min
Skip if: You need reliable cell service, restaurant access, or plan to spend significant time in town daily. The drive adds up.
Local tip: Check your rental's fencing situation before booking. Upper Ojai properties vary wildly. Some are fully fenced acres; others border open deer habitat where dogs will bolt immediately.

Is Ojai dog-friendly overall?

Yes, more so than most Southern California towns its size. Libbey Park, the Ojai Valley Trail, the Ventura River Trail, and the Shelf Road Trail all allow leashed dogs. Several restaurants along Ojai Avenue have outdoor patios that welcome dogs. The main limit is that dogs are not allowed inside Meditation Mount or most retail spaces, which is standard anywhere in California.

Where can dogs swim near Ojai?

Matilija Creek along Highway 33 is the best option, especially in spring and early summer before water levels drop. The creek has several shallow access points near Wheeler Gorge at mile marker 10. Lake Casitas, 6 miles southwest on Highway 150, prohibits dogs on its trails and shoreline entirely, so skip it. The Ventura River near Meiners Oaks has some access but water quality varies after rain.

Are there off-leash dog areas in Ojai?

No designated off-leash dog parks exist within Ojai proper as of 2026. All public trails require leashes. Your best option for off-leash exercise is a vacation rental in Upper Ojai or East Ojai with a fenced yard. Several properties on Gridley Road and along the Highway 33 corridor advertise private fenced acreage specifically for dogs, and most are priced below $250 per night.

What is the best area in Ojai for a large dog?

East Ojai along Gridley Road or Upper Ojai on Highway 33 give large dogs the most room. Both areas have vacation rentals with private yards, and both sit within a short drive of real hiking trails. Meiners Oaks works well if you want flat trail distance. Downtown Ojai is the weakest choice for a large, active dog since everything is leash-only and yard space is minimal at most properties.
