Naha (Kokusai-dori)

Best for culture, transit, and budget travelers

Budget $60-$150/night

Naha is where the monorail runs and most travelers land. Kokusai-dori (International Street) is the spine: 1.6km of restaurants, souvenir shops, and izakayas running from Asahibashi station east toward Makishi. The covered Heiwa-dori arcade branches off at the midpoint and leads straight into Makishi Public Market. Shuri Castle is 40 minutes on foot uphill or two monorail stops east to Shuri station. Tomari Port, where ferries leave for the outer islands, is 15 minutes north on foot. Nights here are loud and genuinely fun. Days are cultural without being manufactured.

Best for
First-timersbudget travelersanyone needing fast airport connectionsfood market lovers
Walk times
  • from Kokusai-dori midpoint to Makishi Public Market entrance 5 min
  • walk from Asahibashi monorail station to the start of Kokusai-dori 12 min
  • on foot from Tomari Ferry Terminal to Naha central hotel district 15 min
Skip if: You want beach access within walking distance or quiet nights
Local tip: Eat at Makishi Market's second floor restaurants. Vendors downstairs sell live fish and shellfish; the upstairs kitchens cook it. Lunch sets run 1,000 to 1,500 yen and are the best value meal in Naha.

Chatan (American Village)

Beach bars, sunsets, and a distinctly US-base vibe

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Chatan sits 20 minutes north of Naha by car and feels like a different island. The American Village complex in Mihama is a mall meets boardwalk built on reclaimed land beside Araha Beach. Sunset over the East China Sea from the ferris wheel is worth one evening. Route 58, which runs the length of Okinawa's west coast, passes directly through town. US military bases sit nearby, so English is widely spoken and the restaurant scene runs more toward craft beer and burgers than traditional Okinawan food. Dive shops cluster along the coast road south toward Maeda Cape. Car rental is near mandatory.

Best for
Familiesdiverscouples who want beach access and nightlife without full resort prices
Walk times
  • walk from American Village parking complex to Araha Beach 5 min
  • walk along the waterfront boardwalk to Depot Island shops 8 min
  • Mihama District Park and the main sunset viewpoint 15 min
Skip if: You want traditional Okinawan culture or reliable public transit
Local tip: The Ryubo supermarket inside the American Village complex stocks US military commissary imports. Cheap American snacks you will not find elsewhere in Japan, and the prices are half what you'd pay at convenience stores.

Onna Village (Onna-son)

Luxury resorts, coral reefs, and Okinawa's best diving

Mid-range $150-$500/night

Onna Village is where the serious resort money concentrates. The coastline along Route 58 from Moon Beach down through Manza Bay has some of Japan's finest beach resorts, and the coral reef here is accessible directly from shore. Cape Manzamo, a naturally sculpted limestone cliff above the sea, is 10 minutes by car from the central hotel strip. Maeda Cape, home to the Blue Cave dive site and the most famous diving location in Japan, sits 20 minutes south. Most resorts have private beach access and on-site watersports operations. Buses run infrequently so a rental car is required. September and October rates drop 30 to 40 percent below peak.

Best for
Honeymoonersdiversfamilies wanting a full resort holidayanyone prioritizing beach quality
Walk times
  • drive from central Onna resort strip to Cape Manzamo limestone viewpoint 10 min
  • drive south to Maeda Cape Blue Cave snorkel and dive site 20 min
  • drive south to Naha on Route 58 with no direct public bus alternative 35 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or arriving without a rental car
Local tip: Book Moon Beach or Manza Beach resorts directly for post-typhoon season stays in September and October. Availability is high and rack rates fall sharply. Water visibility peaks in October after summer plankton blooms settle.

Nago (North Okinawa)

Authentic, affordable, and the gateway to Churaumi Aquarium

Budget $50-$130/night

Nago City is the main town in northern Okinawa, 60km north of Naha. It is a real working city rather than a resort zone, and prices reflect that. Orion Brewery, Okinawa's dominant local beer label, has its factory and free tasting facility on the eastern edge of town near Route 84. The Saturday morning market near Nago City Hall sells fresh produce and local snacks for under 500 yen a bag. Churaumi Aquarium, one of Asia's largest facilities and home to Japan's biggest tank, is 25km further north via bus. The drive up Route 449 through the mangroves is genuinely scenic. Typhoons hit the north harder so check forecasts.

Best for
Budget travelersChuraumi Aquarium visitorsroad-trippersanyone wanting real Okinawa without the tourist layer
Walk times
  • walk from Nago Bus Terminal to Nago City Hall and the Saturday market 10 min
  • walk from central Nago hotels to Orion Brewery factory entrance on Route 84 15 min
  • bus ride north on Route 65 from Nago Bus Terminal to Churaumi Aquarium 30 min
Skip if: You need beach resort facilities, consistent dining options, or quick access to Naha airport
Local tip: Orion Brewery runs free factory tours with tastings daily. Book online since morning slots fill up. The cold 500ml draft at 11am after the tour costs nothing and is one of the genuinely enjoyable moments in northern Okinawa.

What is the best area to stay in Okinawa for first-timers?

Naha, specifically the Kokusai-dori corridor, is the safest first stay. The monorail connects you to the airport in 30 minutes and to Shuri Castle in two stops. Makishi Market is a 5-minute walk from the central hotel zone. You will pay $60-150 per night and have everything from ryokans to business hotels within reach. If beach time is a priority, add one or two nights in Chatan or Onna Village. But base yourself in Naha for the first night.

Do you need a car to get around Okinawa?

Yes, for anywhere outside Naha. The monorail covers central Naha well, but Chatan, Onna Village, and Nago all require a car or infrequent buses that add 90-plus minutes to any journey. Car rental at Naha airport starts around 3,500 to 5,000 yen per day. Book early during July-August and Golden Week. Driving is on the left, same as mainland Japan, and road signs include English. Gas stations and convenience stores are frequent on Route 58 north.

When is the best time to visit Okinawa?

April to June is the sweet spot: warm water, fewer crowds than summer, sea swimmable from May. July and August are hottest and most crowded due to Japanese school holidays, with water temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius but significant typhoon risk. September and October bring post-typhoon quiet, 30 to 40 percent lower resort rates, and excellent diving visibility. December to February is cooler at 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, too cold for most beach swimming, but genuinely cheap accommodation in Naha and good for Shuri Castle and cultural sightseeing.

Is Onna Village worth the extra cost compared to Chatan?

Only if the beach is the main point of your trip. Onna Village resorts have private beaches, on-site watersports, and the Blue Cave dive site 20 minutes south at Maeda Cape. You pay $150 to 500 per night for convenience and coral quality. Chatan gives you Araha Beach access for $80 to 200 with better restaurant variety nearby. If you are primarily sightseeing with some beach time, Chatan wins on value. If a beach holiday is the whole trip, Onna Village justifies the premium.
