Casco Viejo

The historic old town with cobblestones and rooftop bars

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Casco Viejo is the 17th-century walled quarter on a peninsula jutting into the Pacific. Stay near Plaza Herrera or Plaza Bolivar for the best mix of restored colonial buildings, rooftop bars, and seafood spots. Avenida Central runs through the heart, lined with boutique hotels and cafes. Calle 8 has the best dinner scene, while Tantalo Rooftop on Calle 8 Este pulls a crowd at sunset. Skip the blocks west of Calle 12 after dark; the area still has rough patches. Uber to Cinta Costera takes 8 minutes. It's compact, walkable, and the most photogenic part of the city.

Best for
First-time visitorscouplesanyone who wants character over convenience
Walk times
  • Plaza Bolivar 3 min
  • Cinta Costera promenade 12 min
  • Mercado de Mariscos seafood market 7 min
Skip if: You need a pool, gym, or quick airport access
Local tip: Book a room facing the courtyard, not the street. Calle 8 gets loud until 2am on weekends.

Marbella

Business district with the best hotel value in the city

Mid-range $95-$210/night

Marbella sits between Avenida Balboa and Via Espana, packed with international chain hotels, banks, and the Multicentro mall. Calle Uruguay has the highest concentration of restaurants, and Avenida Balboa runs along the bay with a paved jogging path. Hotels here include Marriott, Hilton, and Bristol; rates drop hard on weekends when business travelers leave. The metro Iglesia del Carmen station is on the edge, connecting you to Albrook bus terminal in 15 minutes. It's not pretty, but it's safe, central, and you get four-star amenities for three-star prices. Avoid the blocks immediately around Calle 50 late at night.

Best for
Business travelersweekend deal huntersfamilies wanting pool access
Walk times
  • Cinta Costera promenade 6 min
  • Multiplaza Pacific Mall 18 min
  • Iglesia del Carmen metro 10 min
Skip if: You want walkable nightlife or historic atmosphere
Local tip: Book Friday to Sunday for 30 to 40 percent off corporate rates. Same hotel, half the price.

El Cangrejo

Local nightlife and the cheapest dinners in the city

Budget $70-$140/night

El Cangrejo is the dense residential quarter around Via Argentina and Via Veneto. It's where Panamanians actually go out, not tourists. Calle Eusebio A. Morales has the bar strip, with places like La Rana Dorada brewpub and Casablanca Lounge. Via Argentina is lined with cheap fondas serving full lunches for $5. The Iglesia del Carmen metro station sits at the southern edge, three stops from Albrook. Hotels here are mid-range and small, often family run. It's not flashy and the sidewalks are uneven, but you'll eat better and pay less than anywhere else central. Skip the blocks east of Via Espana after midnight.

Punta Pacifica

High-rise luxury on the bay with the city's best views

Luxury $180-$450/night

Punta Pacifica is the peninsula of glass towers south of Avenida Balboa, anchored by the Trump Ocean Club and JW Marriott. This is where you stay for floor-to-ceiling Pacific views and infinity pools. Multiplaza Pacific Mall is a 5-minute Uber, with luxury brands and a multiplex cinema. The downside: it's an island of towers with nothing to walk to. You'll Uber for every meal. Calle Punta Colon is the only real street, and it dies after 9pm. Hospital Punta Pacifica, the Johns Hopkins affiliate, is here too. Choose this area for the room, not the neighborhood.

Best for

Walk times
  • Multiplaza Pacific Mall 15 min
  • Cinta Costera promenade 20 min
  • Hospital Punta Pacifica 5 min
Skip if: You want to walk to dinner or experience local life
Local tip: Request floors 30 and above for unobstructed bay views. Lower floors face other towers.

Is Panama City safe for tourists?

Casco Viejo, Marbella, El Cangrejo, and Punta Pacifica are safe day and night with normal precautions. Avoid Calidonia, El Chorrillo, and Curundu entirely. Use Uber after dark instead of walking between neighborhoods; rides are rarely over $5.

How far is Tocumen Airport from the main hotel areas?

Tocumen (PTY) is 25 to 40 minutes by Uber depending on traffic, costing $25 to $35. Marbella is closest at around 25 minutes. Casco Viejo is the furthest at 35 to 45 minutes during rush hour. Skip the official taxis; they charge double.

Which area is best for visiting the Panama Canal?

Marbella and Punta Pacifica are closest to Miraflores Locks, about 20 minutes by Uber for $8 to $12. Casco Viejo adds 10 minutes. Book the locks visit before 10am to avoid the cruise ship crowds that flood in by 11.

Do I need to book hotels far in advance?

For dry season (December to April) book 2 months ahead, especially Casco Viejo which sells out on weekends. Rainy season (May to November) you can book 1 to 2 weeks out and often score 30 percent off rack rates.
