Center City

Walk everywhere. Pay for the privilege.

Budget $0-$0/night

Center City is Philadelphia's grid, anchored by City Hall at Broad and Market Streets. Everything radiates from here. Reading Terminal Market is three blocks north on 12th Street. The Convention Center sits just above it. SEPTA's subway lines converge at City Hall station, giving you direct access to the airport and South Philly without a car. Hotels range from budget chains on Chestnut Street to the Loews Philadelphia on Market Street. The downside: noise, traffic, and tourist density are real. But if you want to step out of your hotel and immediately be in the thick of it, nowhere else in Philadelphia comes close.

Walk times
  • Reading Terminal Market 3 min
  • Liberty Bell 18 min
  • Rittenhouse Square 12 min
Skip if: You want quiet streets, boutique charm, or you are watching your budget closely
Local tip: Stay on Chestnut or Walnut between 10th and 18th for the best walkability. Avoid blocks directly around the Convention Center, they are overpriced and feel corporate.

Old City

History on every block, good bars around the corner.

Budget $0-$0/night

Old City sits just east of Center City, roughly between 2nd and 6th Streets along Chestnut and Market. Independence Hall is on Chestnut at 5th. The Liberty Bell Center is steps away. But this neighborhood is more than a museum district. Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in America, runs off 2nd Street. By night, 2nd Street north of Market fills with local bars and restaurants. Hotels lean boutique, Penn's View Hotel on Front Street sits right at the edge of the historic district. Prices are gentler than downtown, and SEPTA's Market-Frankford line gets you to Center City in under 10 minutes.

Best for

Local tip: First Friday (first Friday of every month) turns Old City's galleries into a free open-house circuit. Book a hotel here for that weekend and the neighborhood becomes an event.

Rittenhouse Square

Philadelphia's most livable neighborhood, and the most expensive.

Budget $0-$0/night

Rittenhouse Square is the residential heart of Center City West. The park sits at 18th and Walnut, ringed by some of the city's best restaurants. Parc on the southeast corner of the square does a proper French breakfast. Vernick Food and Drink on Walnut is worth the reservation. The Sofitel at 120 S 17th Street is the neighborhood's flagship hotel. The Rittenhouse Hotel at 210 W Rittenhouse Square sits directly on the park. South Street is 16 minutes on foot. The Art Museum and Rocky Steps are a 22-minute walk up the Parkway. You pay a premium here, but the neighborhood is genuinely pleasant in a way much of Philadelphia is not.

Local tip: DiBruno Bros on Chestnut at 17th is the best cheese and provisions shop in the city. Go there before any picnic in the square.

Fishtown

The cheapest good bed in Philadelphia, if you know what you are getting into.

Budget $0-$0/night

Fishtown sits northeast of Center City along Girard Avenue and Frankford Avenue. It was a working-class neighborhood for most of its history and flipped to a creative district in the 2010s. Frankford Avenue between Girard and York is now a strip of independent bars, coffee shops, and restaurants. Suraya on Frankford does Lebanese food worth the trip from anywhere in the city. The SEPTA Market-Frankford El runs from Fishtown into Center City in about 15 minutes. Hotels are limited, mostly boutique properties and vacation rentals. Parking is easier than downtown. Frankford Avenue gets loud on weekend nights, so ask for a quieter room facing away from the street.

Best for
Budget travelersrepeat visitorsanyone coming specifically for the bar and restaurant scene
Walk times
  • Girard El station (SEPTA) 6 min
  • Center City by train 15 min
  • Penn Treaty Park at the Delaware waterfront 12 min
Skip if: It is your first visit to Philadelphia, you have mobility concerns, or you want immediate access to major attractions
Local tip: ReAnimator Coffee on Frankford is the neighborhood's best. Skip anything within one block of the El station on weekend mornings, it is too loud to sleep past 8am.

What is the best area to stay in Philadelphia for first-time visitors?

Center City between Broad Street and 6th Street along Chestnut or Walnut is the easiest base for a first trip. You can walk to the Liberty Bell in 18 minutes, reach Reading Terminal Market in 3 minutes, and access every major attraction without a car. Expect $150 to $250 per night for a decent hotel. Old City is a strong runner-up at $120 to $200, especially if the historic district is your main focus.

Is Philadelphia safe for tourists staying downtown?

The tourist core of Philadelphia, including Center City, Old City, and Rittenhouse Square, is very safe for visitors. Stay on the main corridors like Market, Chestnut, Walnut, and South Street at night and you will have no issues. Avoid walking north of Vine Street after dark unless you know the area. Kensington, roughly 2 miles northeast of Center City, should be avoided entirely. Fishtown's main strip on Frankford Avenue is safe but gets loud and crowded on weekends.

How do I get from Philadelphia airport to my hotel?

The SEPTA Airport Line runs from all four airport terminals directly into Center City in about 25 minutes for $8. It stops at 30th Street Station, Suburban Station, and Jefferson Station (Market East). From Suburban Station you are a 5-minute walk to most Center City and Rittenhouse hotels. A rideshare costs $25 to $40 depending on traffic. For Old City or Fishtown, a rideshare is more practical than navigating from the El with luggage.

When are Philadelphia hotel rates lowest?

January and February offer the lowest hotel rates, sometimes 35 to 40 percent below summer peak. Avoid May entirely: Penn, Drexel, and Temple all hold graduation ceremonies in the same two-week window, and hotels fill up and triple in price. July and August are busy with summer tourism. October is the sweet spot: the weather is ideal, crowds are lighter than summer, and rates are moderate at $120 to $200 per night in Center City.
