Old Town Scottsdale

Old Town Scottsdale sits 6 miles east of downtown Phoenix and is where most visitors actually want to be. The gallery district runs along Main Street and Marshall Way. Scottsdale Fashion Square at Camelback and Scottsdale Rd is the best mall in metro Phoenix. The Scottsdale Waterfront on N Scottsdale Rd packs 15 restaurants into two blocks. Hotel rates are the highest in the metro: $200 to $350 midrange, $400 to $700 for the W or Andaz Scottsdale. Spring training (February and March) and spring break push rates up 60 to 80 percent over baseline.

Tempe

Budget base near the airport with actual walkability

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Tempe sits between Sky Harbor Airport and Scottsdale, making it the most practical base for most travelers. Mill Avenue runs north from the ASU campus through a walkable strip with bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. Tempe Town Lake on W Rio Salado Pkwy has a 5-mile paved loop that is genuinely pleasant before 8 AM. The Tempe Transit Center connects to light rail heading both downtown and to the airport in 8 minutes. Hotel rates run $100 to $180, which is 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Scottsdale with identical airport access. Busy during ASU graduation (May) and football weekends.

Best for
Budget travelersairport-adjacent staysanyone flying early or late
Walk times
  • Tempe Town Lake on W Rio Salado Pkwy 10 min
  • Mill Avenue dining strip 8 min
  • Tempe Transit Center (light rail to airport) 6 min
Skip if: You want resort amenities or walking distance from Scottsdale galleries
Local tip: The Marriott Tempe at The Buttes on W Elliot Rd has a pool built into volcanic rock. Worth the premium over standard Tempe hotels if you want a resort feel without Scottsdale prices.

What is the best area to stay in Phoenix for first-timers?

Downtown Phoenix near Roosevelt Row is the most practical first-visit base. You are walking distance from the Phoenix Art Museum on Central Ave, the light rail connects you to Tempe and the airport in 14 minutes, and midrange hotels run $120 to $180 per night on weekdays. Avoid booking the first week of March when convention traffic and spring training push rates up 50 percent.

Is Old Town Scottsdale worth the higher hotel prices?

Only if nightlife and restaurant density are your priority. Scottsdale hotels run $80 to $120 more per night than Tempe with similar airport distance. The payoff is walking to 30 plus restaurants on and around Scottsdale Rd and Marshall Way without calling an Uber. If you are mostly attending events downtown, stay in Tempe and save the money.

Do you need a car to get around Phoenix?

Yes, for most of the metro. The exception is staying Downtown or in Tempe near the light rail, which connects Sky Harbor Airport, ASU, and downtown Phoenix. Old Town Scottsdale and Camelback require a car or frequent rides. Uber averages $12 to $18 for trips within the metro during daytime and $25 to $40 round trip at night.

When are Phoenix hotel prices lowest?

June through August is the cheapest window. Summer heat keeps most visitors away and midrange hotels in Tempe and Downtown drop to $80 to $120 per night. Scottsdale resorts cut rates by 40 percent in July. The tradeoff is 105 to 115 degree Fahrenheit heat that makes outdoor activity difficult before 6 AM or after 7 PM. October and November offer the best weather before the winter price spike.
