Beachfront Strip

Wake up 50 feet from the Gulf

Budget $0-$0/night

The stretch along Sandcastle Drive and Beach Access Road 1A is pure Gulf Coast. You roll out of bed and hit the sand before breakfast, no shuttle needed. Properties like Beachgate Condotel sit right on the water and the access roads allow vehicle beach entry before 9am. Rooms face the Gulf directly, so you get sunrise and the sound of waves. The tradeoff is real: dining within walking distance is limited to a handful of snack shacks, and Island Meat Market on Alister Street is a 10-minute drive. Bring groceries. For beach obsessives who want zero commute to the water, nothing else on the island competes.

Best for
Beach-first travelersfamilies with young kidsanyone who wants zero commute to the Gulf
Walk times
  • Gulf beach 1 min
  • Downtown Alister Street 15 min
  • Ferry landing at Cut-Off Road 15 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants and bars without driving every time
Local tip: Beach Access 1A opens vehicle access at 6am. Get there before 9am in summer or you will sit in a 20-minute queue just to park on the sand.

Downtown Port A

Seafood, cold beer, and everything walkable

Budget $0-$0/night

Alister Street is the spine of downtown, lined with seafood shacks, surf shops, and Murdoch's gift store. Station Street leads to the Lydia Ann Channel waterfront. The Port Aransas Brewing Company on Alister is a 4-minute walk from most downtown hotels, and the bars on Tarpon Street are 6 minutes on foot. The ferry landing at Cut-Off Road is a 7-minute stroll north. This is the most convenient base for restaurant-hopping and nightlife. Noise is real on weekends near the Alister bar strip. Mid-range condos and small motels cluster throughout. Not ideal for a quiet escape, but excellent for groups who want options.

Best for
Groupscouples who want dining varietyanyone prioritizing convenience over beach proximity
Walk times
  • Gulf beach via Beach Access 1A 20 min
  • Ferry landing at Cut-Off Road 7 min
  • Cinnamon Shore 10 min
Skip if: You need a quiet sleep. Weekends near Alister Street are loud past midnight.
Local tip: Park once on Station Street and walk the rest of the day. Parking disappears fast on Friday afternoon. Arrive before 2pm or budget 15 minutes circling.

Cinnamon Shore

A self-contained resort community with a private beach

Budget $0-$0/night

Four miles north of downtown on TX-361, Cinnamon Shore is a planned resort community built around pedestrian-friendly streets like Beachside Drive and Sandpiper Street. Think Seaside, Florida but Texas. Golf carts are the default transport, the beach club is private, and the on-site Canteen restaurant handles most meals without leaving the property. Rental cottages sleep 6 to 12 people and prices reflect the amenity level. It is genuinely well-maintained and beautiful. But you are fully insulated from the funky local culture of Port Aransas. The nearest grocery is a 10-minute drive into town. Best for multi-generational families who want pools, a clean beach, and no logistics.

Best for
Families with young kidsmulti-generational groupsanyone who wants a full resort with no planning required
Walk times
  • Private Cinnamon Shore beach 3 min
  • Downtown Alister Street 10 min
  • Ferry landing 20 min
Skip if: Budget travelers or anyone wanting the authentic, low-key beach town feel of Port Aransas
Local tip: Rent a golf cart for the full week, not by the day. Weekly rates from operators like Island Cruisers average $350 to $450 and save $100 or more over daily pricing.

Harbor and Ferry Landing

Where the fishing boats dock and prices stay honest

Budget $0-$0/night

The northwest waterfront near the ferry slip shows the working side of Port Aransas. Along Cut-Off Road and Cotter Avenue you find fishing charter offices, bait shops, and Fisherman's Wharf restaurant right on the water. Roberts Point Park is a 5-minute walk for sunset views over the Intracoastal Waterway. Modest hotels and vacation rentals here run $20 to $40 cheaper per night than beachfront equivalents across the island. The Gulf beach is a 12-minute drive east via the Beach Access roads. Good for anglers who want to roll out at 5am for a charter without navigating beach traffic, or budget travelers using Port A as a base.

Best for
Anglersbudget travelersanyone who wants downtown walkability at lower rates
Walk times
  • Ferry landing 3 min
  • Downtown Alister Street 5 min
  • Gulf beach via Beach Access 1A 12 min
Skip if: Gulf beach access is your top priority. You will drive every single time you want the sand.
Local tip: Fisherman's Wharf runs happy hour from 3 to 6pm daily with half-price raw oysters. Go early on weekends. It fills by 4pm without fail.

What is the best area in Port Aransas for families with young kids?

Cinnamon Shore, four miles north of downtown on TX-361, wins for families. Three pools, a splash pad, a private beach club, and a golf cart community mean kids roam without crossing traffic. The Canteen restaurant covers on-site meals when nobody wants to cook. If budget is tighter, the Beachfront Strip along Sandcastle Drive puts the Gulf 60 seconds from your door, which matters a lot when you are hauling chairs, toys, and sunscreen twice a day.

How far is Port Aransas from Corpus Christi?

About 35 miles and 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the ferry wait. You take TX-361 north from Corpus Christi and cross the Aransas Pass ferry, which is free and runs 24 hours a day. The crossing takes about 10 minutes. During spring break, the queue can add 30 to 90 minutes. An alternate route via TX-361 through Rockport to the north adds roughly 25 minutes but skips the ferry entirely.

When is the best time to visit Port Aransas?

September and October are the sweet spot. Gulf water stays warm at 77 to 82 degrees, crowds drop about 60% after Labor Day, and hotel rates fall $40 to $80 per night compared to June and July peaks. Spring break, typically the second and third weeks of March, is the busiest and most expensive week of the year. Winter is quiet but the Gulf drops to 60 to 65 degrees in January, which rules out swimming for most visitors.

Do you need a car in Port Aransas?

Yes, or a golf cart. The island is 18 miles long, Cinnamon Shore is 4 miles north of downtown, and there is no public transit system. Golf cart rentals run $60 to $90 per day from operators like Island Cruisers and Port A Golf Carts on Station Street. If you are staying on the Beachfront Strip and only care about the sand, you can manage without a car for a few days. But for grocery runs, restaurant variety, or any exploring, having wheels is non-negotiable.
