Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Positano: 4 Areas, Honest Advice

Positano has no bad view. But the wrong neighborhood means 300 stairs to breakfast. We break it down so you pick right.

Spiaggia Grande

The postcard view. Worth every euro, if you can swing it.

Luxury $380-$900/night

This is Positano at its most cinematic. Via dei Mulini drops you straight onto the main beach, and the ferry dock is 90 seconds away. Hotels here cling to the cliff face above the shingle. Mornings you hear boats, not traffic. Via Cristoforo Colombo connects you uphill without the worst stair sections. Everything costs more here, food included. But you wake up facing the water with the dome of Santa Maria Assunta framed in your window. The Sirenuse and Le Sirenuse-adjacent properties are all on this strip. If you are doing Positano once, do it properly.

Best for
Honeymoonssplurge tripsfirst-time visitors who want the full Positano experience
Walk times
  • Spiaggia Grande beach 2 min
  • Ferry dock for Capri and Amalfi boats 3 min
  • Via Pasitea shops and restaurants 8 min
Skip if: You are budget-conscious or plan heavy day-tripping since ferry queues start by 9am
Local tip: Book a room with a sea-facing terrace, not just a sea-view room. The terrace adds roughly 80 dollars per night and is worth it for breakfast alone.

Fornillo

The locals' beach. Quieter, cheaper, genuinely better in peak July.

Luxury $220-$480/night

Fornillo sits a 10-minute walk west of Spiaggia Grande along a cliffside path from Via Positanesi d'America. The beach is smaller and rockier but half as crowded in August. Via Fornillo has four restaurants that are not on TripAdvisor's front page, which means better food and no reservation needed on a Tuesday. Hotels here run about 30 percent cheaper than the main beach. The path back gets dark after sunset so carry a torch in summer. Grocery options are limited to two small shops, so stock up on Via Pasitea before heading down for the day.

Best for
Repeat visitorscouples who want calmanyone staying more than three nights
Walk times
  • Fornillo beach 4 min
  • Spiaggia Grande and ferry dock 12 min
  • Via Pasitea restaurants and bus stop 18 min
Skip if: You need easy ferry access daily or plan late nights out across town
Local tip: Da Ferdinando on Fornillo beach rents sunbeds for less than half the price of Spiaggia Grande and the grilled fish is fresher too.

Mid-Town Via Pasitea

The spine of the village. Central, walkable, best access to food and buses.

Mid-range $160-$420/night

Via Pasitea snakes through the middle of Positano at mid-cliff elevation. This is where the ceramics shops, lemon-printed linen boutiques, and the best aperitivo bars concentrate. Hotels here tend to be family-run B&Bs or four-star spots with rooftop pools. You descend Via dei Mulini to the beach in 15 minutes, pleasant going down and brutal coming back up in August heat. Bus stops on Via Pasitea connect cheaply to Praiano and Amalfi. The SITA bus runs directly to Sorrento in 75 minutes for 2.80 euros. Road-facing rooms get vehicle noise, so always request the sea side.

Best for

Walk times
  • Spiaggia Grande beach via Via dei Mulini 15 min
  • SITA bus stop at Positano Chiesa Nuova 5 min
  • Grocery store and pharmacy 3 min
Skip if: You want waterfront access or are sensitive to road noise at night
Local tip: Ask specifically for a room facing the sea, not Via Pasitea. The same hotel can have vastly different rooms on opposite sides of the building.

Upper Positano / Via Marconi

The practical choice. Panoramic views, real savings, stairs you will negotiate with.

Mid-range $110-$280/night

The SS163 (Via Marconi) runs along the upper ridge and this is where budget options live. Properties here charge 40 to 50 percent less than the waterfront. The catch is stairs: from Via Marconi to Via Pasitea is roughly 200 steps and to the beach add another 100 after that. Views from upper terraces are panoramic and spectacular. The orange Line L minibus picks up on Via Marconi and reaches Via dei Mulini in eight minutes for 2.50 euros, which is how most guests handle the descent daily. Restaurants up here are cheaper and noticeably less crowded than lower Positano.

Local tip: The Line L orange minibus runs every 30 minutes from 8am. Buy a carnet of 10 tickets to save around 20 percent per ride.

Is Positano walkable between its neighborhoods?

Yes, but walking in Positano means stairs, not flat pavements. From Via Marconi down to Spiaggia Grande is roughly 300 steps. Going back up in 35 degree heat is a workout. The orange Line L minibus runs Via Marconi to Via dei Mulini every 30 minutes for 2.50 euros, which most guests use daily. Between Fornillo and Spiaggia Grande the coastal path along Via Positanesi d'America is relatively flat and takes 10 minutes. Within the mid-town Via Pasitea corridor everything is easy on foot.

Which area in Positano is best for a first visit?

Spiaggia Grande if budget is not a concern. You are 2 minutes from the beach, every major restaurant is nearby, and ferries to Capri and Amalfi leave from the same dock. If you are watching costs, Via Pasitea gives you the view, the shops, and bus access without the waterfront premium. Avoid upper Via Marconi for a first visit unless you are completely comfortable with stairs and planning to use the minibus every time you head down.

How far in advance should I book hotels in Positano?

For July and August, book 4 to 6 months ahead. Positano has roughly 3,000 hotel beds serving over 2 million visitors annually. Waterfront Spiaggia Grande hotels typically sell out by March for summer. Fornillo and Via Pasitea properties last longer. Spring (April to mid-June) and October are easier and around 30 percent cheaper. Rates drop again November through March but many smaller hotels close entirely from November to Easter.

Do I need a car to stay in Positano?

No, and a car is actively a problem in lower Positano. The historic center is pedestrian only and parking costs around 25 euros per day at upper lots on Via Marconi. Most visitors arrive by SITA bus from Sorrento (75 minutes, 2.80 euros) or ferry from Naples (75 minutes, 23 euros) or Capri (40 minutes, 22 euros). If you are staying on Via Marconi a car is manageable. Everywhere else, leave it in Sorrento or at the Castellammare di Stabia rail station.
