Alberobello and the Itria Valley

Sleep inside a trullo or you missed the point

Budget $0-$0/night

Alberobello is the reason most people come to Puglia. The UNESCO-listed trulli cluster along Via Monte Nero and Rione Monti, and you can rent one with a working fireplace for under $150 a night. The valley stretches south toward Locorotondo and Cisternino, both worth a night. Via Indipendenza is the main pedestrian drag, cluttered with limoncello shops and excellent focaccia stands. Stay inside the Rione Monti zone for walking access to everything. The countryside trulli rentals on Strada Provinciale 28 are quieter but require a car.

Best for
First-timerscouplesanyone who wants the iconic Puglia photo
Walk times
  • Trulli of Rione Monti from central Alberobello 5 min
  • Locorotondo from Alberobello by bus 20 min
  • Cisternino from Alberobello by car 25 min
Skip if: You hate crowds in summer. July and August, Alberobello is mobbed by 10am.
Local tip: Book a trullo inside the UNESCO zone, not just near it. The difference in atmosphere at night when day-trippers leave is enormous.

Lecce

The most beautiful baroque city you haven't been to yet

Budget $0-$0/night

Lecce is Puglia's cultural capital and it earns the title. Piazza del Duomo is the anchor, flanked by the 17th-century cathedral and the Palazzo Vescovile. Via Libertini and Via Palmieri run with restaurants, aperitivo bars, and gelato joints that stay open past midnight. The centro storico is completely walkable and most hotels sit within 10 minutes of the main sights. Santa Croce basilica on Via degli Ammirati is genuinely one of the finest baroque facades in Italy. Prices are reasonable compared to the Amalfi Coast for equivalent quality.

Best for
Culture loverssolo travelersanyone who wants nightlife and great food
Walk times
  • Piazza del Duomo to Santa Croce Basilica 6 min
  • Lecce centro to train station 15 min
  • Lecce to Otranto by regional train 35 min
Skip if: Beach access is your priority. Lecce is 30 minutes from the coast by car.
Local tip: Stay on Via Paladini or Via Idomeneo inside the old walls. Cheaper and quieter than the tourist-facing hotels on the main piazzas.

Polignano a Mare

Cliffs, caves, and the clearest water on the Adriatic

Budget $0-$0/night

Polignano sits on limestone cliffs above a series of sea caves and crystal inlets. The old town perches on the edge, and Via Roma leads straight to the famous Lama Monachile cove, which you can reach in 4 minutes on foot from the main square. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is compact and the hotel options around it are genuinely good. The town is small, so location barely matters, but the northern end near the Abbazia San Vito gives you better views and fewer evening crowds. Day-trippers from Bari flood in by noon but mostly clear out by 7pm.

Best for
Beach loversphotographerscouples looking for drama
Walk times
  • Old town center to Lama Monachile beach 4 min
  • Polignano train station to old town 12 min
  • Polignano to Monopoli by train 15 min
Skip if: You're traveling in a group of 4 or more. The old town is tight and large-room options are limited.
Local tip: Book a room with a sea-facing terrace. The extra $30 a night is completely worth it. Interior rooms in Polignano are pointless.

Ostuni

The white city on the hill that overlooks everything

Budget $0-$0/night

Ostuni is built on three hills and the centro storico is genuinely white, all limewashed alleys and narrow staircases around the gothic cathedral. Via Cattedrale and Largo Lanzetta are the social hubs with a string of enotecas and trattorias that fill up by 8pm. The lower town around Corso Vittorio Emanuele II has more affordable accommodation and connects to the upper city in a 15-minute walk. Ostuni sits midway between Alberobello and Lecce, making it a logical base for day trips. The Valle d'Itria olive groves spread out below, visible from every terrace.

Best for
Photographerstravelers who want a central Puglia basefamilies
Walk times
  • Lower town to old city center 15 min
  • Ostuni to Fasano by car 20 min
  • Ostuni to Lecce by regional train 60 min
Skip if: You want to be steps from the beach. The coast is 10 kilometers away and requires a car or taxi.
Local tip: Eat dinner at one of the restaurants along Corso Mazzini in the lower town. Half the price of the tourist-facing spots up top, same quality.

Where should first-time visitors to Puglia stay?

Alberobello for one or two nights, then Lecce for the rest. Sleeping in a trullo is the defining Puglia experience and worth doing at least once. Lecce gives you a proper base with great food, walkable streets, and easy train connections to the coast at Otranto and Gallipoli. Avoid splitting your trip into too many locations. Three nights minimum per base.

Which area in Puglia is best for beaches?

Polignano a Mare for dramatic cliff swimming, Torre dell'Orso near Otranto for flat sandy beaches. If beach access is your main priority, base yourself in Polignano and take day trips south toward Monopoli, or rent a car from Lecce and drive the Salento coast. Water visibility in both areas is exceptional from May through September.

Is a car necessary in Puglia?

In Lecce and Alberobello, no. Both old towns are walkable and connected by regional trains. For Polignano, trains from Bari run frequently. But if you want to see masserie, remote beaches, or the valley countryside between towns, a car is the difference between a good trip and a great one. Book it before you arrive. Summer rental prices in Brindisi and Bari airports double if you book on arrival.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

May, June, and September. Weather is warm but not brutal, beaches are open, and towns are manageable. July and August bring 35-degree heat, full prices, and crowds that make Alberobello feel like a theme park by midday. October is underrated: olives are being harvested, restaurants are still open, and you can have Polignano almost to yourself on weekdays.
