01

Crescent City

Northern hub with the most hotel options and services

Mid-range $80-$180/night

Crescent City runs along Hwy 101 just south of the Oregon border and gives you the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores in the region. Most lodging clusters along 2nd Street and Front Street, a five-minute walk from the working harbor. Jedediah Smith Redwoods is nine miles east on Hwy 199. Get supplies at Safeway on Washington Boulevard, eat at Good Harvest Cafe on Front Street. The town is functional and walkable within its small grid. Fog rolls in from the Pacific most mornings and does not burn off until early afternoon. Do not expect sunshine. Expect old-growth trees and cold air.

Best for
First-timersfamiliesanyone who wants dining options and a full grocery store within walking distance
Walk times
  • to Front Street harbor 8 min
  • to downtown restaurants on 2nd St 5 min
  • to Battery Point Lighthouse 15 min
Skip if: You want to wake up inside the park or hate coastal fog rolling through your window every morning
Local tip: Book on the east side of Hwy 101 for quieter rooms. Harbor-view rooms sound better than they are; fog blocks the view most mornings before 11am.

Klamath

Central location on the river, close to both park sections

Budget $70-$150/night

Klamath is a tiny community on the Klamath River, sitting in the middle of the Redwood National and State Parks corridor. A handful of motels line Hwy 101 near Trees of Mystery, the roadside attraction with a gondola ride through old-growth worth doing. Klamath Beach Road leads to the river mouth overlook in about 20 minutes on foot. The Del Norte and Prairie Creek sections of the park are both within 20 miles north and south. Supplies are thin here: a small market and not much else. Cell service drops out. Eat before you arrive or stock up in Crescent City. What you gain is silence and a genuine feeling of being inside the forest corridor.

Best for
Hikers who want central access to both the northern and southern sections without committing to either end
Walk times
  • to Trees of Mystery entrance 10 min
  • to Klamath River Overlook trailhead 20 min
  • to Requa Road scenic viewpoint 12 min
Skip if: You need reliable restaurants or cell service, both are unreliable here
Local tip: The Klamath River mouth at dawn is genuinely spectacular and almost no one goes. Walk down Klamath Beach Road at 6am before any tour buses arrive from Crescent City.

Orick

Southern gateway, steps from Prairie Creek and Fern Canyon

Budget $60-$130/night

Orick is the smallest and most rustic base option, a loose cluster of buildings along Hwy 101 where the park's southern section begins. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park starts two miles north on Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, and the shuttle to Fern Canyon departs from the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center at the edge of town. This is as close to sleeping inside the park as you can get without camping. The Elk Meadow Cabins are the standout accommodation: Roosevelt elk graze the meadow behind them most mornings before 8am. One burger spot, one gift shop. That is the entire town. Stock up in Arcata or Eureka if you are driving up from the south.

Best for
Serious hikers and anyone who wants Roosevelt elk outside their cabin window at sunrise
Walk times
  • to Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center 8 min
  • to Tall Trees Grove shuttle stop 5 min
  • to Davison Road for Fern Canyon access 10 min
Skip if: You want restaurants, reliable WiFi, or anything resembling nightlife after 7pm
Local tip: The Elk Meadow Cabins book out fast in July and August. Reserve three months ahead. Nothing else in Orick comes close to the experience.

Eureka

Largest nearby city, best base for a full North Coast trip

Mid-range $100-$250/night

Eureka is 45 miles south of Orick on Hwy 101 and is a real city with Victorian Old Town, a working waterfront on Humboldt Bay, and the widest range of hotels from budget motels on Broadway to boutique inns in the historic district. 4th and 5th Streets in Old Town have genuine restaurants, craft breweries, and galleries. The drive to Prairie Creek Redwoods takes about 50 minutes. Not ideal if you want to hike every morning, but if you are spending a week in the region and want proper meals and a comfortable bed at night, Eureka earns its place. The Carter House Inn on L Street is the best address in the region for those who care about that.

Best for
Multi-day visitors who want city amenities and plan to explore both the park and the broader Humboldt County coast
Walk times
  • to Old Town 2nd Street district 10 min
  • to Humboldt Bay waterfront 5 min
  • to Blue Ox Millworks historic site 15 min
Skip if: You want to minimize driving to trailheads. The 50-mile commute to the park adds up fast over a week.
Local tip: Stay in Old Town, not on Broadway. The Broadway motel strip is cheaper but the walkable Victorian district is what makes Eureka worth choosing at all.

Where should I stay for the best Redwoods National Park access?

Orick is closest to the southern trailheads including Prairie Creek and Fern Canyon. Crescent City gives you the best range of hotels and is nine miles from Jedediah Smith Redwoods. Most visitors base in Crescent City and day-trip south. If you only have two days, split a night between Orick and Crescent City to cover both ends of the park.

Is there lodging inside Redwoods National Park?

There is no traditional hotel inside the national park. The Elk Meadow Cabins in Orick sit on the park boundary and are as close as you can get without camping. Four campgrounds operate inside the park: Jedediah Smith, Mill Creek, Elk Prairie, and Gold Bluffs Beach. Gold Bluffs is the most dramatic, with Roosevelt elk on the beach, but the road is unpaved and closed to trailers over 24 feet.

How far is Crescent City from the redwood trees?

The closest old-growth grove to Crescent City is the Boy Scout Tree Trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods, about nine miles east on Hwy 199 and 15 minutes by car. For Fern Canyon and Prairie Creek, you drive about 50 miles south to Orick, roughly an hour each way. Budget a full day if you want to see both northern and southern sections.

What is the cheapest area to stay near Redwoods National Park?

Orick has the lowest rates, with cabins and rentals from around $60 per night. Klamath motels run $70 to $100 in shoulder season. Crescent City drops to $80 from October through April when fog and rain keep most tourists away. Avoid July and August if you have not booked three months out.
