Seltjarnarnes

Closest dark sky to the city center

Mid-range $100-$200/night

This narrow peninsula west of Reykjavik ends at Grótta, a tidal island with an automated lighthouse and near-zero overhead light pollution. Eiðsgata runs the spine of the peninsula, lined with low-rise homes and guesthouses on Lindargata and Ásvallagata. Grótta is accessible on foot when the tide is out, roughly a three-hour window per tidal cycle. Check tide tables at vedur.is before heading out. The Icelandic Met Office aurora forecast regularly lists Grótta as the top in-city viewing point. You need a car or bus route 11, a 25-minute ride, to reach downtown restaurants at night.

Best for
Aurora chasers who want to walk to a dark sky spot without renting a car
Walk times
  • Grótta lighthouse 8 min
  • Seltjarnarnes swimming pool 5 min
  • Reykjavik city center 35 min
Skip if: You want restaurants, bars, or nightlife within walking distance after dark
Local tip: Set a KP-2 alert on the Icelandic Met Office app (en.vedur.is). When it fires after 22:00, you can be standing at Grótta in under 10 minutes from any guesthouse on Eiðsgata.

Hafnarfjörður

Darker skies and 30% cheaper hotels, 10km south

Mid-range $90-$220/night

A town of 30,000 people 10km south of Reykjavik on Route 1. Strandgata runs along the harbor, past the Viking Village restaurant complex (Fjörukráin) on Strandgata. Light pollution runs about 40% lower than downtown Reykjavik. The lava field east of town along Hellisheiðavegur gives a completely unobstructed northern horizon, the view you need when the aurora is active. Reykjavik city bus route 1 runs every 15 minutes until midnight. The harbor fish market opens at 07:00 and serves the cheapest breakfast in Greater Reykjavik. Hotel prices run 30 to 40% less than equivalent downtown properties.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelers who want darker skies and do not mind a short bus or drive into the city
Walk times
  • Harbor fish market 3 min
  • Route 1 bus to Reykjavik city center 25 min
  • Hellisheiðavegur lava field viewpoint 10 min
Skip if: You want to walk to Reykjavik's restaurants and nightlife without any transit
Local tip: Strandgata has almost no street lighting after 23:00. On nights with a KP index of 3 or higher, you can often see a faint green arc directly from the harbor street without driving anywhere.

Laugardalur

Geothermal pool at your door, 20% cheaper than 101

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Iceland's largest outdoor geothermal pool, Laugardalslaug, anchors this eastern residential valley. Hotels and guesthouses cluster along Sundlaugavegur and Engjavegur, about 3km from the 101 city center. Light pollution is lower than downtown but still suburban. The main draw for aurora chasers is proximity to Laugarnes point, a small north-facing promontory about 1km from the main hotels where the horizon opens up to the sea. A 12-minute walk or 4-minute drive gets you there. Prices run 20 to 30% less than equivalent city-center properties without a meaningful drop in comfort.

Best for
Travelers balancing comfortreasonable pricesand a short walk to a decent aurora viewing point
Walk times
  • Laugardalslaug geothermal pool 2 min
  • Laugarnes point aurora viewing spot 12 min
  • Downtown Laugavegur 35 min
Skip if: You want to be in the center of Reykjavik's restaurant and bar scene without any transit
Local tip: Laugardalslaug stays open late in the evening. The outdoor hot tubs face north and the pool is rarely crowded after 21:00. Several guests have photographed the aurora while soaking in the outdoor section.

101 Reykjavik

Most convenient base, but worst for aurora viewing

Mid-range $150-$400/night

The city's main square, Austurvöllur, sits at the center of this compact grid. Walk Laugavegur for restaurants and vintage shops, Skólavörðustígur for galleries, Bankastræti for cocktail bars. Hotels range from boutique guesthouses to the four-star Hótel Borg on Pósthússtræti 11. Light pollution from Hallgrímskirkja and Harpa Concert Hall means you will not see the aurora from your hotel window. But you are 4km from Grótta lighthouse and 12 minutes by taxi from Öskjuhlíð hill, both reliable viewing spots. Restaurants serve until midnight and bars until 04:00 on weekends.

Best for
First-time visitors who want the full Reykjavik experience and plan to join an organized aurora tour
Walk times
  • Hallgrímskirkja church 3 min
  • Harpa Concert Hall 8 min
  • Grótta lighthouse 45 min
Skip if: Your sole reason for visiting is aurora photography and you plan to self-drive to dark sky locations
Local tip: Book a north-facing room on Hverfisgata rather than the south side of Laugavegur. On strong aurora nights (KP-5 or higher), you can sometimes see a faint green glow over Faxaflói bay from a high-floor window without leaving the building.

When is the best time of year to see the northern lights in Reykjavik?

September through March gives you the dark nights required. The equinoxes in late September and late March historically produce the strongest geomagnetic activity, with the KP index regularly hitting 3 or higher. January and February are coldest but offer up to 18 hours of darkness per day. Avoid June and July entirely: the midnight sun means no astronomical darkness at all, and the aurora is invisible even when it is technically active above you.

Which Reykjavik neighborhood has the least light pollution for aurora viewing?

Seltjarnarnes wins by a clear margin. Grótta tidal island at the tip of the peninsula is the closest point to the city center where you can stand in near-total darkness and look straight up. Hafnarfjörður to the south is a close second with more hotel options at lower prices. Both areas are reachable without a car using Reykjavik city buses.

Do I need a car to see the northern lights from Reykjavik?

No. Grótta in Seltjarnarnes is reachable on foot from guesthouses on Eiðsgata in about 8 minutes. Bus route 11 connects 101 Reykjavik to Seltjarnarnes in 25 minutes. If you want truly dark skies at spots like Þingvellir (45km east) or Nesjavellir (60km), a rental car helps significantly. Aurora tour operators also run minibus trips from the city center for around $50 to $80 per person on active nights.

How far in advance should I book a hotel in Reykjavik for aurora season?

Book at least three months ahead for October through February. Reykjavik has roughly 12,000 hotel beds and fills quickly during peak aurora months. Seltjarnarnes and Hafnarfjörður have fewer properties and sell out faster than 101. If you are flexible on dates, monitor the Icelandic Met Office 3-day aurora forecast at en.vedur.is and book within a two-week window when a strong geomagnetic period is predicted. Last-minute rates on active-forecast nights typically spike 40 to 60% above base prices.
