The Fan District

Historic streets, walkable dining, classic Richmond

Budget $0-$320/night

The Fan runs west from downtown along Monument Avenue and Park Avenue, fanning out into tree-lined blocks of Victorian rowhouses. West Main Street is your dining hub with spots like Edo's Squid and The Roosevelt a few blocks apart. The Boulevard cuts north toward the Diamond baseball stadium. You are 15 minutes on foot to VCU and 20 minutes to Carytown. Most hotels sit on West Broad Street or nearby side streets. Parking is street-only on many blocks, so plan accordingly. This is the neighborhood most visitors picture when they imagine Richmond.

Scott's Addition

Craft breweries, converted warehouses, zero tourist crowds

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Scott's Addition sits just north of the Fan along Roseneath Road and West Broad Street, packed into about 20 square blocks. It went from light industrial to Richmond's craft beer capital in under a decade. Ardent Craft Ales, Veil Brewing, and Buskey Cider all sit within a few blocks of each other. Hotel Hatch opened in 2022 inside a converted warehouse on West Moore Street. Noisier on weekends when brewery crowds peak, quieter Monday through Thursday. No real grocery stores nearby. Rideshare to downtown takes about 8 minutes; walking is 25 minutes east.

Shockoe Bottom

Waterfront history, James River access, late-night options

Mid-range $95-$400/night

Shockoe Bottom runs along East Main Street and East Cary Street down to the James River floodwall. Richmond's oldest commercial district sits about 10 minutes on foot from Capitol Square. The Canal Walk connects you to Brown's Island and Tredegar Iron Works. The 17th Street Farmers Market is still active on weekends. The neighborhood floods occasionally during heavy rain, so avoid lower-level rooms after storms. Nightlife clusters along East Cary Street. This area draws history-focused visitors more than leisure travelers, and hotel rates reflect the location premium near the Capitol.

Carytown is a single-mile stretch of West Cary Street between Thompson Street and Nansemond Street, lined with independent boutiques, vintage shops, and restaurants. Byrd Theatre, a 1928 movie palace on West Cary Street, still screens films for $1 on Saturday nights. Lunch spots like Can Can Brasserie fill up fast on weekends. There are no major hotels inside Carytown itself but several sit on West Broad Street about 5 minutes by car. Parking in the neighborhood lots off Nansemond is usually free. Quieter than the Fan for nightlife, livelier for daytime shopping and brunch.

Best for
Leisure travelersshoppersfamilies who want a quieter base with strong brunch options
Walk times
  • Byrd Theatre 7 min
  • The Fan District border 12 min
  • Maymont Park 18 min

What is the best area to stay in Richmond VA for first-time visitors?

The Fan District is the easiest choice for a first visit. You are within 20 minutes on foot of most things worth seeing, West Main Street has 15 plus restaurants worth your time, and Monument Avenue gives you the classic Richmond streetscape. Mid-range hotels on West Broad Street run $130 to $200 per night.

Is Richmond VA safe for tourists?

The Fan, Carytown, Scott's Addition, and Shockoe Bottom are all fine for tourists during the day and evening. Avoid walking alone east of 17th Street past midnight. Downtown around West Broad Street between 5th and 9th can feel empty after 9pm on weeknights. Stick to the neighborhoods in this guide and you will not have issues.

How far is Richmond from Washington DC?

Richmond is 110 miles south of Washington DC, about 1 hour 45 minutes by car on I-95 without traffic. The Amtrak Virginia train from DC Union Station to Main Street Station in Shockoe Bottom takes about 2 hours and costs $25 to $40. It is faster than driving during morning rush hour.

When is the best time to visit Richmond VA?

April through May is the sweet spot. Temperatures stay between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, the Fan and Maymont Park are in bloom, and hotel rates have not hit summer peaks yet. September and October are nearly as good. Avoid July and August if you dislike humidity, which Richmond gets aggressively during those months.
