West Bay

The postcard beach everyone comes for

Mid-range $150-$400/night

West Bay Beach is the two-mile stretch of white sand at the island's western tip, and it is what shows up when you Google Roatan. Resorts line the beach from Bananarama down to Infinity Bay, with the reef sitting just 30 feet offshore for snorkeling straight from the sand. The main beach road has casual spots like Bite on the Beach and Pineapple Willy's, plus dive shops at every other property. It gets crowded when cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay, usually Tuesday through Thursday, so book a beachfront resort with private sand if you want quiet. Evenings empty out fast since most visitors retreat to their resorts.

Best for
Honeymoonersfamiliesfirst-time visitors who want sand and snorkeling without thinking
Walk times
  • Reef snorkel entry 1 min
  • West End by water taxi 10 min
Skip if: You want local food, walkable nightlife, or a real neighborhood feel
Local tip: Take the $3 water taxi to West End for dinner instead of the $25 taxi by road. Last boat back is around 9pm, so check the schedule at the Bananarama dock before you go.

West End

The dive village with cheap rum and a pulse

Budget $60-$200/night

West End is a half-mile strip along Half Moon Bay where the road is sand, the sunsets are loud, and the dive shops outnumber everything else. Sundowners is the rooftop bar everyone ends up at, and Earth Mama's does the best breakfast on the island. Coconut Tree Divers and Native Sons handle most certifications, and you can walk between five dive shops in ten minutes to compare prices. Rooms range from $40 hostel beds at Georphi's to $200 boutique stays at Mariposa Lodge. The road floods in heavy rain and dogs sleep in it, which is part of the charm. Stay here if you want to actually meet people.

Best for
Diverssolo travelersbudget visitorsanyone who wants to walk to dinner
Walk times
  • Half Moon Bay snorkel 2 min
  • Sundowners bar 5 min
  • West Bay Beach by water taxi 10 min
Skip if: You need a quiet beach right outside your room or you hate village noise after 10pm
Local tip: Book dives directly at the shop, not through your hotel. You will save $15 to $20 per dive and the shop owners are the ones who actually know which sites are worth it that week.

Sandy Bay

The quiet luxury corner most tourists miss

Luxury $200-$600/night

Sandy Bay sits between West End and the airport on the north shore, and it is where you go when you want Roatan without the crowds. The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences runs the dolphin program at Anthony's Key, and Carambola Botanical Gardens is a 20-minute walk inland. There is no real village here, just a string of resorts like Las Sirenas and Mayoka Lodge spread along quiet beaches. Restaurants are mostly inside the resorts, so plan to eat where you sleep or taxi to West End. The reef is exceptional and rarely crowded, which is the actual reason to stay here. Bring a flashlight for walking after dark.

Best for
Couplesreturning visitorspeople who want spa days and empty beaches
Walk times
  • Sandy Bay reef entry 1 min
  • Carambola Gardens 20 min
  • West End by taxi 10 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants, nightlife, or to feel like you are on vacation with other humans
Local tip: The shore dive at Bailey's Key is one of the best in the Caribbean and most guests skip it for boat trips. Ask your resort to arrange a guided shore dive instead, it is half the price.

French Harbour

Where actual Roatan people live and work

Mid-range $80-$250/night

French Harbour is the island's commercial heart on the south shore, with the main marina, the shrimp processing plant, and most of the local population. You will not find a beach here, but you will find Gio's for lobster, the Saturday morning market behind the main road, and authentic Garifuna and Bay Islander life. Parrot Tree Plantation and Pristine Bay sit just east with golf and quieter beaches. Most foreign visitors skip French Harbour entirely, which is exactly why it is interesting if you want to see the island past the tourist track. Drive carefully on the main road, it is the busiest stretch on Roatan.

Best for
Repeat visitorssailorsanyone wanting local food and zero resort vibe
Walk times
  • French Harbour Marina 5 min
  • Gio's restaurant 5 min
  • Pristine Bay Beach by car 10 min
Skip if: This is your first Roatan trip or you came here to lie on a beach all week
Local tip: Eat at BJ's Backyard on the bay side for the best baleadas on the island. It is open for lunch only and locals fill it by 12:30, so go early or eat late.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Roatan?

West Bay. The beach is a 10-minute walk end to end, the reef is right there, and you can snorkel, eat, and dive without ever taking a taxi. Pick a resort on the actual beach, not across the road.

Is West End or West Bay better?

West Bay has the better beach. West End has the better food, nightlife, and prices. They are 10 minutes apart by water taxi, so most people stay in West Bay and visit West End for dinner two or three nights.

Is Roatan safe to walk around at night?

West Bay and West End are fine to walk after dark, with normal precautions. Sandy Bay needs a flashlight since there is no street lighting. Avoid walking along the main highway between towns at night, take a taxi for $5 to $10.

Do I need to rent a car in Roatan?

No. Taxis are cheap and water taxis between West Bay and West End cost $3. Rent a car only if you are staying in Sandy Bay or French Harbour and want to explore the East End beaches like Camp Bay.
