Barrio Escalante

The food street with rooms above

Budget $70-$160/night

Escalante is built around Calle 33, a five-block stretch packed with restaurants, third-wave coffee shops, and craft beer bars. You can walk from your hotel to dinner at Sikwa or Silvestre, then grab a nightcap at Cerveceria Costa Rica without ever calling an Uber. The streets are narrow and walkable, which is rare in San Jose. You're 15 minutes on foot from the National Theater and Plaza de la Cultura. Mornings are quiet, evenings buzz until midnight. Stay here if eating well matters more than a pool. The neighborhood feels safe at night because there are always people on Calle 33.

Best for

  • National Theater 15 min
  • Mercado Central 20 min
  • Parque Morazan 10 min

Barrio Amon

Faded grandeur, cheap rooms

Budget $50-$120/night

Amon is the oldest residential neighborhood, full of coffee-baron mansions from the 1900s. Many are now boutique hotels, like Hotel Don Carlos and Hotel Santo Tomas, which keep the original tile floors and courtyards. You're a 5-minute walk to the Jade Museum and 10 minutes to the Gold Museum under Plaza de la Cultura. Avenida 9 has good cheap sodas where lunch costs under $8. The area gets quiet after dark and a few blocks feel rough at night, so stick to Calles 3 to 7. It's the cheapest central option that still feels like staying somewhere with character.

La Sabana

Central Park of San Jose

Mid-range $80-$150/night

La Sabana wraps around Parque Metropolitano La Sabana, the city's biggest green space. It's where locals jog, play soccer, and picnic on Sundays. Hotels here face the park or sit on Paseo Colon, the main avenue running west from downtown. You're 20 minutes walking to the National Theater or 8 minutes by Uber. The Costa Rican Art Museum sits inside the park. Streets are wider and quieter than Escalante, with less foot traffic at night. Good for families and travelers who want morning runs without dodging traffic. Restaurants are spread out, so you'll Uber to Escalante for dinner most nights.

Escazu

Suburb comfort, 20 minutes from downtown

Mid-range $110-$220/night

Escazu is technically its own canton, 7 km west of central San Jose. It's where wealthy Costa Ricans and most expats live. You get the Multiplaza mall, big-name hotels like Courtyard and Sheraton, and reliable restaurants along Avenida Escazu. The downside: you'll need an Uber for everything outside Escazu itself. Trips to downtown run $8 to $12 and 25 minutes in traffic. Stay here if you're driving in from the airport with a rental car, doing business meetings in the western corridor, or want a pool and gym without surprises. Skip it if you came to walk around old San Jose.

Best for
Business travelfamilies with rental carscomfort seekers
Walk times
  • Multiplaza Mall 10 min
  • Avenida Escazu 5 min
  • Downtown San Jose: Uber only, 20 25 min
Skip if: You don't want to Uber everywhere
Local tip: The Saturday farmers market on Calle del Llano runs 7am to noon and beats any supermarket.

Is San Jose safe to walk around at night?

Central areas like Escalante and the south side of Amon are fine until midnight. Avoid walking around the Coca-Cola bus terminal, the area east of Calle 9 in Amon, and any empty street south of Avenida 2 after dark. Ubers are cheap, usually $3 to $5 across downtown.

How many days do I need in San Jose?

One to two days covers the city. Most travelers use San Jose as an arrival or departure base before heading to Arenal, Manuel Antonio, or Monteverde. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Jade Museum, and a meal in Escalante can be done in a single day.

Should I stay near the airport instead?

Only if you have a flight before 7am or arrive after 10pm. Airport hotels like Hampton Inn SJO sit in Alajuela, 18 km from downtown and surrounded by warehouses. There's nothing to walk to. For any normal stay, Escalante or Sabana beats the airport zone.

Do I need a rental car in San Jose?

No. Traffic is brutal, parking costs $10 to $15 a night at hotels, and Uber works everywhere in the metro area. If you're driving on to Manuel Antonio or Arenal, pick up the rental on your departure morning instead of paying for parking all week.
