Where to Stay in the San Juan Islands

Friday Harbor sits on San Juan Island and is where the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes lands. Spring Street runs uphill from the dock past the Whale Museum, coffee shops, and the San Juan Island Brewing Company on Nichols Street. You can ditch the car entirely. The marina, restaurants like Coho and Duck Soup, and grocery runs at Kings Market are all walkable. Stay near First Street or Argyle Avenue for the shortest dock walk. Boat tours leave from Slip 56 daily. Rooms book out fast for July and August whale season, so lock yours in by April. Town gets quiet by 9pm, which is the point.

Roche Harbor

You need a car or a $40 taxi from the ferry. English Camp National Historical Park is 4 miles south on West Valley Road. This is where couples stay. Eastsound (Orcas Island)

Eastsound is the main village on Orcas Island, a separate ferry stop 20 minutes past Friday Harbor. North Beach Road and Main Street hold the bakeries, Brown Bear Baking and Roses Bakery Cafe, plus Hogstone's Wood Oven for dinner if you book three weeks out. Moran State Park is 13 miles southeast on Olga Road and contains Mount Constitution, the highest point in the islands at 2,409 feet. Cascade Lake sits inside the park for swimming. Stay on Crescent Beach Drive for waterfront, in the village for walkability. Doe Bay Resort on the east side is a separate scene, hot tubs and yoga, 30 minutes from Eastsound.

Lopez Village

Bike-friendly and quiet. The locals call it Slowpez.

Lopez is the first ferry stop and the flattest of the three main islands, which is why it draws cyclists. Lopez Village is small, basically Lopez Road, Fisherman Bay Road, and a few cross streets. Holly B's Bakery, Vita's Wildly Delicious, and the Galley Restaurant on Fisherman Bay are the food anchors. Spencer Spit State Park sits 4 miles northeast on Baker View Road and is good for kayaking. Shark Reef Sanctuary at the south end is a 30-minute drive plus a 10-minute walk through forest to seal-watching cliffs. Drivers wave at each other here. That is not a joke, it is the unwritten rule.
