01

Cagliari (Castello & Marina)

The capital base for first-timers

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Cagliari is where you land and most people leave too quickly. The Castello district sits on a hill with bastion views over the Gulf, and the Marina quarter below it has the best food in southern Sardinia. Stay near Via Roma or Bastione Saint Remy. You can walk to Poetto Beach in 25 minutes or take bus PF in 15. Mercato di San Benedetto on Via Tigellio opens at 7am and is the real deal for fish. Skip the chain restaurants on Via Manno. Cagliari Elmas Airport is 8km from the center, around 18 euros by taxi.

Best for
First-time visitorsculture and foodtravelers without a car
Walk times
  • Bastione Saint Remy to Marina 6 min
  • Via Roma to Poetto Beach bus stop 4 min
  • Castello to Mercato San Benedetto 12 min
Skip if: You came for beaches only. Poetto is fine but not the best on the island.
Local tip: Eat at Luigi Pomata on Viale Regina Margherita for fresh tuna, then walk up to Castello at sunset. The bastion light at 7pm in summer is the photo everyone misses.

Costa Smeralda (Porto Cervo)

Luxury coast, summer-only prices

Luxury $400-$500/night

Costa Smeralda is a 55km stretch on the northeast coast built by the Aga Khan in the 1960s. Porto Cervo is the heart of it. Yachts, designer shops on Promenade du Port, and beach clubs at Liscia Ruja and Spiaggia del Principe. Prices triple in July and August, then drop 60 percent in May and October. Olbia airport is 30km away, around 45 euros by taxi. You need a rental car. The public bus exists but runs three times a day. Stay near Porto Cervo Marina or Cala di Volpe if budget allows. Skip Baja Sardinia if you want quiet, it is loud and packed.

Best for
Luxury travelersyacht crowdspecial occasions
Walk times
  • Porto Cervo Marina to Piazzetta 3 min
  • Hotel Cervo to Spiaggia del Principe 18 min
  • Cala di Volpe beach to village 8 min
Skip if: You are on a budget, traveling without a car, or visiting outside June to September
Local tip: Book lunch at Phi Beach in Baja Sardinia for sunset over the rocks. Get the seafood pasta, skip the cocktails at 22 euros each.

Alghero

Catalan old town on the northwest coast

Mid-range $110-$260/night

Alghero feels Spanish because it is. The old town inside the sea walls has been Catalan since 1354 and they still speak Algherese. Stay inside the bastions near Torre di Sulis or Bastioni Marco Polo for the sunset walk along the ramparts. Via Carlo Alberto is the main shopping street, full of coral jewelry shops and gelato. The beaches at Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto are 7km north, reachable by AP local bus. Alghero airport (Fertilia) is 12km away, around 25 euros by taxi. Grotte di Nettuno boat trip from Bastioni leaves at 9am and 3pm, book the day before.

Best for
Coupleshistory fansmid-range travelerstravelers who want walkable charm
Walk times
  • Torre di Sulis to Cattedrale di Santa Maria 5 min
  • Bastioni Marco Polo to fishing port 4 min
  • Old town to Lido di Alghero beach 22 min
Skip if: You want resort amenities. Old town hotels are small and rarely have pools.
Local tip: Eat at Il Pavone on Piazza Sulis. Order the lobster Catalan style, it is the local specialty and worth the 60 euro splurge once.

Villasimius

Beach base on the southeast coast

Mid-range $130-$340/night

Villasimius is 50km southeast of Cagliari and the best beach base on the south side. The town itself is small, but you are 10 minutes from Spiaggia di Punta Molentis, Spiaggia del Riso, and Porto Giunco where the water actually looks like the postcards. Stay near Via del Mare or Piazza Gramsci for walkable restaurants. Rent a car at the airport, the SS125 drive in takes 50 minutes. Skip Costa Rei unless you want isolation, it is beautiful but 25km further with nothing around. Capo Carbonara marine reserve is 5km away with snorkeling spots. Avoid August unless you booked in February, prices double and beaches fill at 9am.

Best for
Beach loversfamiliescouples wanting turquoise water without Costa Smeralda prices
Walk times
  • Piazza Gramsci to Spiaggia del Riso 15 min
  • Via del Mare to harbor 6 min
  • Town center to Porto Giunco 12 min
Skip if: You want nightlife or culture. The town shuts at 11pm.
Local tip: Drive to Spiaggia di Punta Molentis before 10am. Park costs 5 euros and fills by 11. The flamingos in the lagoon behind the beach are real and there year-round.

What is the best area to stay in Sardinia for first-timers?

Cagliari for 2 nights, then Alghero for 3 nights. You see the capital, eat well, and get the Catalan old town without driving more than 3 hours. Skip Costa Smeralda on a first trip unless luxury is the point.

Do I need a car in Sardinia?

Yes for Costa Smeralda, Villasimius, and exploring beaches. No for Cagliari or Alghero if you stay in the old town. Rental cars run 35 to 60 euros per day from Olbia or Cagliari airports, book 30 days ahead in summer or you pay double.

When is the cheapest time to visit Sardinia?

Late May and early October. Hotel prices drop 50 to 70 percent versus July and August, water is still 22 degrees, and you can park at any beach. Avoid Ferragosto week (August 10 to 20), prices peak and locals shut half the restaurants.

Which area has the best beaches in Sardinia?

Costa Smeralda for famous postcard beaches like Spiaggia del Principe and Liscia Ruja. Villasimius for the same turquoise water at half the price. La Pelosa near Stintino in the northwest is arguably the most beautiful, but you need to book a parking permit online and arrive before 9am in summer.
