Uptown Sedona

Walk to everything, pay for the privilege

Luxury $220-$520/night

Uptown runs along Highway 89A north of the Y intersection, where Tlaquepaque Arts Village anchors the south end and a string of galleries and shops stretches half a mile north. Jordan Road branches west into quieter terrain with trail access and fewer crowds. Most hotels cluster within four blocks of the main strip, which means red rock views from your balcony are possible but never cheap. Airport Mesa trailhead is an 8-minute drive north and worth hitting at sunrise before tour groups arrive. This is the only Sedona neighborhood where you can genuinely skip a rental car for a full day.

Best for
First-timers who want walkable dining and zero logistics stress
Walk times
  • Tlaquepaque Arts Village 8 min
  • Jordan Road trailhead 6 min
  • Airport Mesa overlook (drive) 8 min
Skip if: You hate crowds, need quiet nights, or are watching your budget
Local tip: Book rooms on the creek side of 89A for Oak Creek Canyon views. The hillside-facing rooms look at a parking lot.

West Sedona

Local Sedona, half the tourist noise

Mid-range $150-$320/night

Cross the Y and head west on 89A and the tone changes fast. Coffee Pot Rock rises above the road while locals eat breakfast at Coffee Pot Restaurant on West 89A before 8am. Dry Creek Road peels north toward Secret Canyon and Boynton Canyon trailheads, some of Sedona's best hiking with light foot traffic by 7am. Soldier Pass Road gives direct trail access without backtracking through Uptown. Dining here costs 25 to 40 percent less than Uptown equivalents. Hotels run noticeably cheaper too. You will need a car for everything, but trailhead access from this side of town is genuinely faster.

Best for
Hikers targeting west-side trailsanyone staying more than two nights
Walk times
  • Coffee Pot Rock trailhead (drive) 6 min
  • Boynton Canyon trailhead (drive) 15 min
  • Uptown Sedona (drive) 8 min
Skip if: You want to walk to dinner without planning around 89A traffic
Local tip: Soldier Pass Road trailhead fills by 9am in spring and fall. Staying on the west side lets you hit it at 6:30am without a 20-minute commute through Uptown.

Village of Oak Creek

Bell Rock at your door, Uptown a 20-minute drive away

Mid-range $120-$260/night

The Village of Oak Creek sits 6 miles south of Uptown along Highway 179, the Scenic Road. Bell Rock Boulevard runs east from the highway past the Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte trailheads, two of Arizona's most photographed formations. Verde Valley School Road leads to quieter picnic areas most tour groups never find. The village has its own small dining cluster on Bell Rock Plaza and a Basha's grocery for self-catering. A room that costs $350 in Uptown runs $190 here. The trade-off is a 20-minute drive north every time you want the main Sedona restaurant strip.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelerstrail runnersfamilies with early bedtimes
Walk times
  • Bell Rock trailhead 5 min
  • Courthouse Butte loop trailhead 7 min
  • Uptown Sedona (drive) 20 min
Skip if: You want multiple dinner options within 10 minutes without driving Highway 179
Local tip: The Bell Rock trailhead parking lot fills by 8am in peak season. Staying in VOC means you can walk over before any rental car crowd shows up.

Chapel Area (Back O' Beyond)

Red rock seclusion without full resort prices

Mid-range $160-$380/night

Chapel Road curves east off Highway 179 about 3 miles north of VOC, climbing toward the Chapel of the Holy Cross embedded in the sandstone at 4,500 feet. Back O' Beyond Road branches south into canyon terrain where small inns and vacation rentals sit with unobstructed Munds Mountain views. The area has almost zero walkable amenities but near-total quiet after 7pm. Cathedral Rock is a 10-minute drive. VOC dining is 8 minutes away. Some properties on Back O' Beyond Road command views that cost twice as much in Uptown, for the same or less money. Good cell signal, better stars.

Best for
Couplesphotographersanyone who came to Sedona for silence and views
Walk times
  • Chapel of the Holy Cross 4 min
  • Cathedral Rock trailhead (drive) 10 min
  • Village of Oak Creek dining (drive) 8 min

What is the best area to stay in Sedona AZ for first-timers?

Uptown Sedona along Highway 89A is the best base for a first visit. You can walk to Tlaquepaque, Airport Mesa is 8 minutes by car, and Jordan Road trailhead is 6 minutes on foot. Expect to pay $250 to $400 per night for a solid hotel. The crowds are real, but logistics are simple and you will not regret the location.

Is it worth staying in the Village of Oak Creek instead of Uptown?

Yes, if saving $80 to $150 per night matters and you have a car. Bell Rock trailhead is 5 minutes on foot from most VOC hotels. Uptown dining is 20 minutes north on Highway 179. VOC has a Basha's grocery and several solid restaurants on Bell Rock Plaza. Most visitors underestimate the commute and regret it if they want Uptown evenings.

When is the best time to visit Sedona AZ?

March to May and September to November are the best windows. Spring brings wildflowers along Oak Creek Canyon and temperatures in the low 70s. Summer reaches 100F in July and August. Fall has the best light for red rock photography. Prices peak in April and October. Crowds thin on weekdays even in peak season.

Do you need a car to stay in Sedona AZ?

Yes, with one exception. Uptown Sedona is walkable enough that you can skip a car for a single day, but trailheads throughout the rest of the area require driving. The Sedona Shuttle runs from Uptown to select trailheads from 8am to 5pm but does not cover West Sedona or VOC. Rent a car, preferably an SUV for dirt road access to Palatki ruins and some Cathedral Rock pullouts.
