Myeongdong

Seoul's busiest address, and still worth it for first-timers

Budget $70-$250/night

Myeongdong sits between City Hall and Namsan Mountain, making it Seoul's most central base. The main shopping strip, Myeongdong-gil, runs north to south and fills with street food carts after 6pm. Deoksugung Palace is a 12-minute walk west along Sejong-daero. Namdaemun Market is 8 minutes south on foot. Line 4 from Myeongdong Station reaches Dongdaemun Design Plaza in four stops. Hotels cluster on the quieter side streets off Chungmuro-ro. Expect noise from vendors and tour groups until 11pm most nights. Budget and mid-range hotels dominate, but several business-class properties push $200 on weekends.

Gangnam

Business hotels, Garosugil cafes, and zero tourist crowds

Mid-range $120-$450/night

Gangnam centers on Teheran-ro, a six-lane boulevard lined with tech firms and financial offices. Gangnam Station on Lines 2 and Sinbundang connects to Seoul Station in 22 minutes. COEX underground mall is an 8-minute walk east, and Bongeunsa Temple sits right behind it. The quieter Sinsa-dong neighborhood off Garosugil has tree-lined streets with independent boutiques and third-wave cafes. Hotels here are larger, with proper conference facilities and English-speaking staff throughout. Prices run 30 percent higher than Myeongdong for comparable quality. Samseong-dong around Bongeunsa carries the highest density of five-star properties in the city.

Hongik University Station serves Lines 2, the AREX airport express, and the Gyeongui Line. Gimpo Airport is six minutes by train. Hostels and guesthouses from $35 a night dominate the core. Boutique hotels on the Yeonnam-dong side range from $90 to $160. Street noise peaks Friday and Saturday until 3am.

Bukchon Hanok Village, the preserved cluster of 600-year-old tile-roofed houses, starts just north of Anguk Station. Hanok guesthouses offer private rooms from $100. What is the best area to stay in Seoul for first-time visitors?

Myeongdong is the safest first-time choice. You can walk to Deoksugung Palace in 12 minutes, reach Namdaemun Market in 8, and take Line 4 to every major site. The trade-off is street noise and crowds until 11pm. If quiet matters more than centrality, Jongno puts you closer to the palaces at similar nightly rates. Skip Gangnam your first trip unless you have a specific business reason to be there.

Is Gangnam worth staying in as a tourist?

Yes, but only with a specific reason. Business travelers benefit from the conference infrastructure and consistent English-speaking staff. Couples wanting upscale dining and a quieter base will enjoy Garosugil and Sinsa-dong. But if your main targets are palaces, temples, and traditional markets, add 35 minutes of subway commuting per day versus staying in Myeongdong or Jongno. Hotels in Gangnam also cost 30 percent more for equivalent quality.

How far is Hongdae from Incheon International Airport?

Further than most people expect. Hongdae is six minutes from Gimpo Airport on the AREX express, which works well for domestic or short-haul international flights. But Incheon International is 53 minutes on the same AREX line. If you have an early Incheon departure, plan to leave your hotel by 5am. Myeongdong, with Seoul Station a 5-minute walk away, gives faster Incheon access.

Which Seoul neighborhood is quietest at night?

Jongno and Insadong go quiet by 10pm. Most restaurants close, street activity drops, and the area runs on early-morning temple and palace schedules. Gangnam is quieter than central Seoul outside pockets near Gangnam Station. Myeongdong has vendor noise until 11pm most evenings. Hongdae is the loudest option overall, with the club district on Eoulmadang-ro running until 4am on Friday and Saturday nights.
