Palermo

Street food, chaos, and centuries of history in one walkable center

Budget $0-$0/night

Palermo is Sicily's capital and its most electric base. Stay near Via Maqueda or Piazza Pretoria and you are within 10 minutes of the Ballaro market, the Palatine Chapel, and a dozen panelle vendors. The Kalsa neighborhood south of Via Roma is quieter but still walkable to everything. Streets here are loud, scooter-heavy, and occasionally confusing. That is part of it. Hotels range from crumbling palazzos turned boutique stays to solid 3-stars near the train station. Avoid anything past Via Oreto unless you want to feel truly off the tourist circuit. Best value city in Sicily, full stop.

Best for
First-time Sicily visitorsfood loversbudget travelershistory buffs
Walk times
  • Palatine Chapel 12 min
  • Teatro Massimo 6 min
  • Vucciria Market 18 min
Skip if: You want beach access or a quiet slow-paced holiday
Local tip: Book a hotel on or just off Via Maqueda for the best walking access. The Quattro Canti intersection is your mental anchor point for the whole city.

Taormina

The most photogenic town in Sicily, and it knows it

Budget $0-$0/night

Taormina sits 200 meters above the Ionian Sea on a clifftop. Corso Umberto I is the pedestrian spine where most hotels cluster, walking distance from the Greek Theatre and the views over Etna. Cheaper options exist on Via Bagnoli Croce or down in Mazzaro at sea level, reachable by cable car in 10 minutes. High season prices spike hard. Book 3 months out for anything decent between June and August. The town itself is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes. Everything here costs 20 to 40 percent more than Catania, and the crowds in July are real.

Walk times
  • Greek Theatre 8 min
  • Piazza IX Aprile 5 min
  • Mazzaro beach via cable car 12 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or staying more than 4 nights
Local tip: Mazzaro at the bottom of the cliff is a genuine alternative to town. You get beach access and lower prices. The cable car runs until midnight in summer.

Catania

Real city energy, Etna views, and the best fish market in Sicily

Budget $0-$0/night

Catania does not get enough credit. The fish market on Via Pardo opens at 5am and runs until noon six days a week, and it is one of the best free experiences in Italy. The centro storico around Piazza del Duomo and Via Etnea has been heavily restored and is genuinely walkable. Most hotels cluster between the Duomo and the train station, which is also the intercity bus hub. Flights land at Catania Fontanarossa, 7 kilometers from the center. Etna is 45 minutes by bus from Piazza Borsellino. For price and logistics, Catania beats every other Sicilian city as a base.

  • Bellini Garden 15 min

Local tip: Stay north of Piazza del Duomo, between Via Etnea and Corso Italia. You are 15 minutes from the airport by taxi (around 15 euros) and central for everything.

Syracuse (Ortigia)

Ancient Greece on a small island, quieter than you expect

Budget $0-$0/night

Ortigia is the old island center of Syracuse, connected to the mainland by two short bridges. The whole island is roughly 1 kilometer wide and 1.5 kilometers long. Most hotels sit on or near Via della Maestranza and Piazza Archimede, both walkable in under 5 minutes from the waterfront. The Duomo, built inside a 5th-century BC Greek temple, is 3 minutes from nearly any hotel. Syracuse has far fewer tourists than Taormina and a much slower pace. Day trips to the Neapolis Archaeological Park take 20 minutes on foot from Ortigia. Mid-range hotels here are genuinely good value.

Best for
History loverscouplesanyone who finds Taormina too touristy
Walk times
  • Neapolis Archaeological Park 22 min
  • Duomo di Siracusa 4 min
  • Fonte Aretusa 6 min
Skip if: You want nightlife, a beach resort, or easy airport access
Local tip: Stay in Ortigia itself, not the modern mainland. The difference in atmosphere is total. Anything within 200 meters of Via della Maestranza is well-placed.

What is the best area to stay in Sicily for first-timers?

Palermo. You are central, it is the cheapest major city in Sicily, and within 2 days you can hit the Ballaro market, the Palatine Chapel inside the Norman Palace, and the Cappella della Martorana. Flights into Palermo Falcone-Borsellino airport take 45 minutes to the center by taxi (around 35 euros) or 50 minutes by Prestia e Comandé bus for 6.30 euros.

Is Taormina worth the higher prices?

For 2 to 3 nights, yes. For a week, no. The Greek Theatre at sunset is genuinely one of the best views in Italy. But the town is small, prices are inflated, and you will have seen everything by day 3. Combine it with Catania as a cheaper base and take the 1.5-hour Interbus ride up for a night or two.

Where should I stay in Sicily to visit Mount Etna?

Catania. The AST bus leaves from Piazza Borsellino at 8:15am and reaches the Rifugio Sapienza base station at 1,923 meters in about 75 minutes. Return bus leaves at 4:30pm. Tickets cost 6.60 euros each way. From Taormina you need a tour or rental car, which costs 3 to 4 times more.

How far apart are Palermo and Catania?

About 3 hours by intercity bus (FlixBus or Interbus, around 12 euros) or 2.5 hours by train from Palermo Centrale to Catania Centrale. By car on the A19 autostrada it takes around 2.5 hours. Basing in one city and visiting the other as a long day trip is realistic, though one night in each gives you a much better sense of both.
