Marina Bay

The skyline you came to see

Luxury $220-$480/night

This is where Singapore shows off. Marina Bay Sands dominates the waterfront, the ArtScience Museum sits next door, and the Helix Bridge connects you to Gardens by the Bay in 8 minutes on foot. Stay around Bayfront Avenue or Raffles Avenue if you want hotel windows facing the light show at 8pm and 9pm nightly. Marina Bay MRT (Circle and Downtown lines) drops you at the Sands lobby. Walk along the Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade for free skyline views without paying for the SkyPark observation deck. Restaurants at Marina Bay Sands are tourist-priced. Cross the Helix Bridge to Satay by the Bay for hawker prices instead.

Best for
First-time visitors who want the iconic view and don't mind paying for it
Walk times
  • Gardens by the Bay 8 min
  • Merlion Park 15 min
  • Bayfront MRT 3 min
Skip if: You want late-night street food. The area shuts down by 11pm and food options are mall-based.
Local tip: Book a room on floor 35 or higher facing the Bay. The free light show is better from your window than from the crowded promenade.

Chinatown

Where Singapore actually eats

Mid-range $110-$260/night

Chinatown packs hawker centers, temples, and shophouse hotels into ten walkable blocks. Maxwell Food Centre on Kadayanallur Street is where you go for Tian Tian Hainanese chicken rice (the Anthony Bourdain stall, $6). Smith Street and Pagoda Street are pedestrianized at night with food stalls and bars. Sri Mariamman Temple on South Bridge Road is the oldest Hindu temple in the country, free to enter. Chinatown MRT (Northeast and Downtown lines) puts you two stops from Marina Bay and three from Orchard. Stay near Keong Saik Road for boutique hotels in restored shophouses. Avoid hotels right on Eu Tong Sen Street, the traffic noise carries until 1am.

Best for
Food-first travelers who want to walk to dinner instead of taking taxis
Walk times
  • Maxwell Food Centre 4 min
  • Marina Bay 18 min
  • Chinatown MRT 2 min
Skip if: You want quiet mornings. Temple bells start at 6am and delivery trucks unload at 5am.

Orchard Road

Shopping and air-conditioned everything

Mid-range $160-$340/night

Orchard Road is 2.2 kilometers of malls connected by underground passages and covered walkways, which matters when it is 33 degrees and raining sideways. ION Orchard, Ngee Ann City, and Paragon are the three big malls. Orchard MRT (North-South line) is one stop from Newton Hawker Centre, where chili crab runs $40 instead of $80 in tourist restaurants. Stay between Orchard MRT and Somerset MRT for the best access. Hotels on Orange Grove Road are quieter but add a 10-minute walk. Skip hotels east of Plaza Singapura, you lose the mall network and gain traffic. Emerald Hill Road just off Orchard has Peranakan shophouse bars worth a detour.

Best for
Travelers who want everything within a covered walkway and easy MRT access
Walk times
  • ION Orchard 3 min
  • Newton Hawker Centre 12 min
  • Orchard MRT 5 min
Skip if: You want local atmosphere. This stretch feels like any other Asian capital's shopping district.

Bugis

Central location, real prices

Mid-range $80-$180/night

Bugis is where backpackers, mid-range travelers, and the Arab Street crowd overlap. Bugis Street Market runs from Victoria Street with cheap clothing and street food until 10pm. Haji Lane two blocks east has independent boutiques and rooftop bars between the Sultan Mosque and Kampong Glam. Bugis MRT (East-West and Downtown lines) gets you to Marina Bay in 6 minutes and Chinatown in 4. Stay around Middle Road or Beach Road for the best mix of price and walkability. Avoid hotels on Rochor Road, the highway noise is constant. Lavender MRT one stop north has cheaper hotels but you lose the walkable food scene that makes Bugis worth choosing.

Best for
Budget travelers who refuse to compromise on location or food access
Walk times
  • Haji Lane 6 min
  • Bugis Street Market 3 min
  • Bugis MRT 2 min
Skip if: You want luxury or quiet. This area is loud, crowded, and proudly so.

Is Marina Bay or Orchard better for first-time visitors?

Marina Bay if you want the iconic skyline and don't mind $220+ rooms. Orchard if you prefer mall access, covered walkways, and slightly lower prices around $160. Marina Bay wins on views, Orchard wins on convenience and shopping. Both are 8 minutes apart by MRT so you can stay in one and visit the other.

Where should I stay in Singapore for cheap eats?

Chinatown wins. Maxwell Food Centre, Hong Lim Market, and Chinatown Complex are all within a 5-minute walk and serve full meals for $5 to $8. Bugis is second with the Bugis Street stalls and Albert Centre Hawker. Skip Marina Bay for food, you'll pay double for the same hawker dishes.

How far is Changi Airport from these areas?

Marina Bay is 25 minutes by MRT (East-West line, $2.40) or 20 minutes by taxi ($25 to $30). Orchard is 30 minutes by MRT or 25 by taxi. Chinatown and Bugis are both around 28 minutes by MRT. The MRT runs from 5:30am to midnight, so late arrivals need a taxi or Grab.

Which area has the best nightlife?

Clarke Quay (10-minute walk from Chinatown) has the highest concentration of bars and clubs along the Singapore River. Haji Lane in Bugis has rooftop and craft cocktail spots. Marina Bay has high-end hotel bars like LeVeL33. Avoid Orchard for nightlife, it shuts down with the malls at 10pm.
