Downtown

Walk everywhere, skip the car

Mid-range $130-$320/night

The cluster between Main Street and West Temple is where SLC's best hotels sit. You're 5 minutes from Temple Square on South Temple Street, 3 minutes from City Creek Center on 50 South. TRAX light rail runs free along Main Street every 15 minutes in the core zone. Restaurants line 300 South. Salt Palace Convention Center anchors 100 South. Grand America sits on 600 South, quieter and more removed. Properties near 200 South and State Street hit the best price-to-location ratio. Airport is 25 minutes via TRAX Green Line for $2.50, which beats the $35 cab every time.

Sugar House

Where locals actually eat and drink

Mid-range $85-$155/night

Sugar House runs along 2100 South from 1100 East to Highland Drive, about 3 miles east of downtown. Independent coffee shops, breweries, and restaurants cluster on McClelland Street and Wilmington Avenue. Emigration Market on 1100 East is a real grocery store, not a tourist trap. Sugar House Park on 1300 East covers 110 acres. Parking is free everywhere. You need a rideshare or the 200 bus to reach downtown, about 15 minutes. Prices run 30 to 40 percent below downtown rates. The University of Utah and Natural History Museum are under 10 minutes east by car.

The Avenues

Victorian blocks, quiet streets, ten minutes downhill from everything

Mid-range $90-$175/night

The Avenues run north of South Temple Street up to 11th Avenue, between State Street and Virginia Street. Streets are alphabetically named A through U. Nearly all lodging here is B&Bs and small inns on 2nd and 3rd Avenue, no chain hotels. Capitol Theatre and Temple Square are a 10-minute walk downhill. City Creek Canyon trail starts at the top of B Street. Utah State Capitol sits 8 minutes away on foot. Quiet residential parking, no bar noise. The catch is the return trip from downtown is a noticeable uphill climb on South Temple Street, which matters after a long day.

Walk times
  • Temple Square 10 min
  • Utah State Capitol 8 min
  • City Creek Canyon trail 6 min
Skip if: Mobility is a concern or you have heavy luggage. The uphill return from downtown is real.
Local tip: Cafe on 1st on 1st Avenue is cash-only, opens at 7am, and has the best breakfast in this part of the city. Line forms early on weekends.

Murray and Cottonwood

Ski shuttle access, half the downtown price

Budget $70-$130/night

Murray runs along State Street from 4500 South to 6200 South, about 10 miles south of downtown. This is the practical winter base. UTA ski buses and Canyon Transport shuttles leave from Cottonwood Heights Park-and-Ride on 6200 South, reaching Alta in 35 minutes and Snowbird in 30. New hotels opened near 6200 South and Highland Drive after Cottonwood Mall redevelopment. Chain properties dominate but prices drop 40 percent versus downtown. TRAX Red Line at Murray Central connects to downtown in 25 minutes for $2.50. Not scenic, not walkable, but genuinely useful from December through April when ski access is the whole point.

Best for
Ski tripsfamilies on a tight budgetroad trippers arriving from I-15 south
Walk times
  • TRAX Murray Central station 10 min
  • Cottonwood Heights Park-and-Ride ski shuttles 8 min
  • Fashion Place Mall 12 min
Skip if: It is summer or you want walkable dining and SLC culture. Murray has nothing worth walking to.
Local tip: UTA ski bus costs $5 round trip to Alta or Snowbird. Buy the season pass online before December, prices rise after opening day.

What is the best area to stay in Salt Lake City?

Downtown wins for most visitors. You walk to Temple Square, City Creek Center, and Vivint Arena, and TRAX is free in the core zone. Budget travelers should look at Sugar House, which cuts costs 30 to 40 percent with a 15-minute ride to downtown.

Where should I stay in SLC to be near the ski resorts?

Murray or the Cottonwood area near 6200 South is the practical choice. UTA ski buses leave from Cottonwood Heights Park-and-Ride and reach Alta in 35 minutes for $5 round trip. Staying downtown adds 20 minutes to every ski day because you still need to get to the bus.

Is Salt Lake City walkable?

Downtown is very walkable. The grid is wide but flat, and TRAX is free in the core. Sugar House and the Avenues are walkable within each neighborhood but require a ride to reach downtown attractions. Murray is fully car-dependent.

How far is Salt Lake City airport from downtown?

SLC airport is 5 miles west of downtown, about 15 minutes by car without traffic. TRAX Green Line runs direct from the airport to downtown in 25 minutes for $2.50 and departs every 15 minutes, making it the obvious choice over a $35 taxi.
