01

Central West End

The walkable heart of the city

Mid-range $140-$240/night

Central West End is where most first-timers should land. Euclid Avenue is the spine, lined with sidewalk cafes, the Chase Park Plaza, and independent bookstores like Left Bank Books. You're a 5 minute walk from Forest Park, which is bigger than Central Park and home to the free Saint Louis Art Museum and the Zoo. The neighborhood has its own MetroLink stop (Central West End station) so you can reach downtown in 12 minutes without a car. Restaurants like Herbie's, Sub Zero, and Brasserie by Niche pull locals, not just tourists. Tree-lined Maryland Avenue and McPherson have the best evening stroll.

Best for
First-time visitors who want walkable dining and Forest Park access
Walk times
  • Forest Park 5 min
  • Cathedral Basilica 8 min
  • MetroLink station 4 min
Skip if: You need to be next to the Arch or Busch Stadium
Local tip: Park at the Chase Park Plaza garage for $15 a day and walk everywhere. Street parking on Euclid is metered and brutal after 5pm.

Clayton

Quiet, polished, and corporate

Mid-range $160-$280/night

Clayton is technically its own city, sitting just west of St. Louis proper. It's the financial district with high-rises along Forsyth and Maryland, plus a clean grid of restaurants on Carondelet Avenue. Stay here if you have meetings at Centene, Enterprise, or Wash U. The Ritz-Carlton and the Seven Gables anchor the hotel scene. Walk to Pastaria for Gerard Craft's pasta, or Half and Half for the best brunch in the metro area. Shaw Park has tennis courts and an ice rink in winter. It's safer feeling than downtown at night, but quieter, with shops closing by 7pm.

Best for
Business travelers and people who want a quieter base
Walk times
  • Wash U campus 15 min
  • Forest Park 20 min
  • Clayton MetroLink 6 min
Skip if: You want bars, music, or a downtown vibe at night
Local tip: The MetroLink Red Line gets you to the Arch in 22 minutes from Clayton station for $2.50, faster than driving and parking downtown.

Soulard

Brick row houses, blues bars, and beer

Mid-range $110-$190/night

Soulard is the oldest neighborhood in the city, just south of downtown. Russell Boulevard and Geyer Avenue have rows of 1850s brick townhouses and the Soulard Farmers Market, running every Saturday since 1779. Stay here for Mardi Gras (the second biggest in the country) or to walk to the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour on 12th and Lynch. McGurk's Irish Pub on 12th Street has live music nightly. Bastille and 1860 Saloon pour cheap drinks and stay loud. It's gritty around the edges, especially east of Broadway, but the core blocks around Lafayette Square are safe and beautiful.

Best for
Nightlifebeer fansand Mardi Gras visitors
Walk times
  • Anheuser-Busch tour 12 min
  • Soulard Market 5 min
  • Busch Stadium 18 min
Skip if: You're a light sleeper or traveling with kids
Local tip: Skip hotels east of Broadway. The blocks between Soulard and the riverfront feel sketchy after dark, even on weekends.

The Hill

Little Italy in the Midwest

Mid-range $120-$200/night

The Hill is six blocks of red, white, and green fire hydrants and the best Italian food between Chicago and Kansas City. Marconi Avenue and Shaw Avenue are the main drags. Adriana's makes the toasted ravioli that the city invented. Gioia's slings hot salami sandwiches at lunch only, cash preferred. For dinner, book Charlie Gitto's on the Hill or Trattoria Marcella two weeks ahead. It's residential and sleepy outside meal times, with limited hotel options (mostly small inns and Airbnbs). You'll need a car or rideshare to reach downtown, about 12 minutes via I-44. Yogi Berra grew up on Elizabeth Avenue.

Best for
Foodies focused on Italian dining
Walk times
  • Adriana's 4 min
  • St. Ambrose Church 6 min
  • Forest Park: drive 10 min
Skip if: You want to walk to attractions or nightlife
Local tip: Reservations at Charlie Gitto's and Trattoria Marcella book 10 to 14 days out for weekends. Call, do not use OpenTable, you get better tables.

Is downtown St. Louis safe to stay in?

The blocks right around Busch Stadium and the Arch are fine during games and daylight, but downtown empties out fast at night. Hotels north of Washington Avenue or east of Broadway feel deserted after 8pm. Stay in Central West End or Clayton instead and ride the MetroLink Red Line to the Arch in 12 to 22 minutes for $2.50.

What's the best neighborhood for first-time visitors?

Central West End. You can walk to Forest Park (free zoo, free art museum), eat at Herbie's or Brasserie, and ride MetroLink to the Arch without driving. Hotels run $140 to $240. Skip the airport hotels and downtown chains, you'll spend $40 in rideshare every day getting to the actual city.

Where should I stay for a Cardinals game?

Soulard puts you 18 minutes walking to Busch Stadium and saves you $30 to $50 a night versus downtown. Hotels near the stadium triple their rates on game nights. Walk back through Lafayette Square after the game, it's well lit and busy. Avoid hotels east of Broadway.

Do I need a car in St. Louis?

If you stay in Central West End or Clayton, no. The MetroLink Red Line runs from the airport through both neighborhoods to the Arch for $2.50 per ride. For The Hill or Soulard nightlife runs, you'll want rideshare (Uber rides downtown average $12 to $18). Renting a car only makes sense if you're visiting the Missouri Botanical Garden or driving out to wine country.
