Frenchtown

A local waterfront neighborhood one mile from downtown with half the price

Budget $0-$0/night

Frenchtown sits just west of Charlotte Amalie along the waterfront below a small peninsula. The neighborhood has real character: descendants of French-speaking settlers from St. Barthelemy still live here, which explains the nickname Cha-Cha Town. Hook Line and Sinker restaurant is right on the water at the Frenchtown marina. Oceana Restaurant sits at Villa Olga on the point. The walk into Charlotte Amalie along Waterfront Highway takes about 20 minutes on flat ground, or catch a safari for $1. There is a small deli and a handful of bars within two blocks of the marina. Quieter than downtown, genuinely local.

Best for
Budget travelerslocals-first diningand anyone who wants quiet evenings close to downtown
Walk times
  • Frenchtown marina to Hook Line and Sinker 3 min
  • Hook Line and Sinker to Villa Olga point 5 min
  • Frenchtown to Charlotte Amalie waterfront 20 min
Skip if: You want a beach within walking distance, since the nearest beach requires a safari
Local tip: Monday nights at Hook Line and Sinker are the most local thing you will do in St. Thomas. Get there by 7pm for a waterfront table.

Can you really get around St. Thomas without a car?

Yes, if you stay in the right area. Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook are both walkable and connected by safari trucks that cost $1 to $5 per ride. Ferries from both locations reach St. John and other islands. You will miss northern beaches like Magens Bay without a car or paid taxi, but the core of the island is accessible without renting.

How do safari trucks work in St. Thomas?

Safari trucks are open-air shared taxis running fixed routes across the island. The main stop in Charlotte Amalie is on Veterans Drive at the waterfront. Flag one down, state your destination, and pay $1 to $5 depending on distance. They do not run on a strict schedule and wait until they fill up. Most routes run from around 6am to 10pm. Ask your hotel for the nearest stop.

Is Charlotte Amalie safe to walk at night?

Stick to Main Street (Dronningens Gade), the waterfront along Veterans Drive, and the blocks around Emancipation Garden. Those areas stay well-lit and active until around 10pm. Avoid wandering uphill into residential streets after dark. Frenchtown is calmer and safe at night. Red Hook's waterfront strip near American Yacht Harbor is lively and generally fine until midnight.

Which area is best for a day trip to St. John without a car?

Red Hook is the clear winner. The St. John ferry departs hourly from the Red Hook ferry dock from 6:30am to 11pm, costs $7 each way, and takes 20 minutes to Cruz Bay. From Charlotte Amalie you can also take a ferry, but it runs less frequently and takes about 45 minutes. If St. John is your priority, book in Red Hook and walk to the dock.
