Downtown Stanley

Walkable hub, two saloons, and the Salmon River out back

Mid-range $120-$220/night

Ace of Diamonds Street runs the length of downtown, about three blocks total. The Sawtooth Hotel sits at the corner of Ace of Diamonds and Wall Street, the closest thing to a proper hotel in this 63-person town. Valley Creek flows behind the main strip, and Highway 21 branches toward Sun Valley or Stanley Lake from here. Most restaurants, gear shops, and the post office sit within a two-minute walk. You are 5 miles from Redfish Lake and 12 miles from Sunbeam Hot Springs. Everything closes early and some places shut entirely from October to May. Plan around that.

Best for
First-timerscouplesanyone who wants to walk to dinner without driving
Walk times
  • Redfish Lake Lodge 8 min
  • Stanley Lake turnoff 10 min
  • Sunbeam Hot Springs 18 min
Skip if: You need reliable WiFi, air conditioning, or anything resembling a chain hotel
Local tip: The Rod and Gun Club on Ace of Diamonds is where locals actually drink. Sit at the bar, not a table, and you will get the real stories about the Sawtooths.

Redfish Lake Area

The postcard view of Idaho, with lodge cabins to match

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Five miles south of town on Highway 75, Redfish Lake Road dead-ends at one of the most photographed spots in Idaho. Redfish Lake Lodge runs the main lodging operation here, with individual cabins and a main lodge building fronting a sandy beach. The backdrop is the Sawtooth peaks reflecting off the 1,282-acre lake. The marina rents kayaks and a boat taxi crosses to trailheads on the far shore. Campgrounds run along the eastern edge. July and August are the busiest months in the entire Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Book six months out for summer weekends or you will not find a bed within 40 miles.

Best for
Familiesphotographersanyone doing the lake-to-Sawtooth hike circuit
Walk times
  • Downtown Stanley 8 min
  • Redfish Lake Visitor Center 5 min
  • Bench Lakes Trailhead 20 min
Skip if: You want quiet. Summer crowds are real, loud, and unavoidable here.
Local tip: The lodge restaurant is solid but priced for captive guests. Grab lunch at the marina snack bar instead and save the lodge for dinner when it thins out.

Stanley Lake Area

The quieter lake, no resort scene, full wilderness access

Mid-range $100-$200/night

Take Iron Creek Road five miles northwest from downtown and you reach Stanley Lake, a 151-acre lake with a fraction of Redfish Lake crowds. A small campground and a handful of cabin rentals line the southeastern shore. The Iron Creek trailhead and Sawtooth Wilderness access point sits at the end of the road. No lodge, no resort, no boat rentals. What you get is a gravel approach road, near-empty parking in shoulder season, and unobstructed views of McGown Peak and the Sawtooth Range reflected across calm water. Cell service disappears past the Highway 21 turnoff. Pack groceries and firewood before leaving downtown because there is nothing to buy out here.

Best for
Backpackerssolo travelersphotographers who want the lake without the summer scene
Walk times
  • Downtown Stanley 10 min
  • Iron Creek Trailhead 15 min
  • Stanley Lake east shore viewpoint 2 min
Skip if: You need a restaurant within reach, nightlife, or any cell coverage after 8 p.m.
Local tip: The sunrise on McGown Peak from the east shore beats anything at Redfish. Set an alarm for 5:30 a.m. and you will likely have the entire lakeshore to yourself.

Salmon River Corridor

Fishing lodges, hot springs, and a river running past your door

Mid-range $90-$180/night

Highway 75 follows the Salmon River east from downtown toward the abandoned mining settlement of Sunbeam. Small fishing lodges and cabin rentals cluster along Casino Creek Road and the river flats just east of town. Sunbeam Hot Springs, free soaking pools cut directly into the riverbank, sits about 12 miles out and draws visitors year-round regardless of temperature. This is where serious fly fishers base themselves for the week. The river passes chinook salmon spawning beds in September and October. Expect a few miles of gravel to reach most properties. No walkable shops or restaurants exist out here. The trade is waking up ten feet from moving water.

Best for

Walk times
  • Downtown Stanley 10 min
  • Sunbeam Hot Springs 12 min
  • Salmon River fishing access 1 min
Skip if: You want to walk anywhere. This stretch requires a car for every meal and every errand.
Local tip: Sunbeam Hot Springs has no fee and no gate. Go before 7:30 a.m. on a weekday in shoulder season and the pools by the river are yours alone.

When is the best time to visit Stanley, Idaho?

July and August bring warm days around 75 degrees F but also peak crowds at Redfish Lake and rates at the top of the range. June delivers wildflowers and 30 to 40 percent lower prices but expect snow above 8,000 feet on trails. September is the best month for most visitors: crowds drop sharply, temperatures stay in the 60s, and the chinook salmon run begins on the Salmon River near Sunbeam. Winter closes most lodging and Highway 21 over Banner Summit closes entirely in heavy snow years. Call ahead before any November to April visit.

Is Stanley, Idaho worth a dedicated trip or just a drive-through?

Worth at least two nights. The view of the Sawtooth Range from Redfish Lake Road is one of the best mountain panoramas in the lower 48 states, full stop. One day for the lake, one day for a hike into the Sawtooth Wilderness, and one evening at a downtown bar covers the highlights. Most people who drive through regret not staying. Stanley sits 2.5 hours from both Boise via Highway 21 and Ketchum via Highway 75, so it pairs cleanly with either as a multi-day itinerary.

How far is Stanley, Idaho from Boise?

About 130 miles and 2.5 hours under normal conditions via Highway 21 over Banner Summit at 7,056 feet. The road closes in heavy winter snow, so check road status at 511.idaho.gov before driving between November and April. From Ketchum and Sun Valley it is 60 miles north on Highway 75, roughly 75 minutes. From Twin Falls allow around 3 hours via Highway 75 through Shoshone. There is no public transit option. A car is required for every part of a Stanley trip.

Are there hot springs near Stanley, Idaho?

Two worth knowing. Sunbeam Hot Springs is 12 miles east on Highway 75, free year-round, with multiple soaking pools carved into a ledge directly above the Salmon River. Cold river water mixes with hot spring water so you can regulate temperature. Boat Box Hot Spring sits 3 miles further east down a short trail and is more secluded. Both are primitive with no facilities and no fee. Wear water shoes on the rocky approach. Pools fill by mid-morning on summer weekends. Go before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to avoid the crowds.
