Norrmalm, Stockholm

Central hub, easy access, no-nonsense base

Mid-range $110-$350/night

Norrmalm sits at Stockholm's commercial core, anchored by Central Station and Sergels Torg. Drottninggatan is the main pedestrian shopping street running north from the plaza. Kungsgatan cuts east to west past NK and Åhléns department stores. T-Centralen metro station puts the rest of the city within 20 minutes. Gamla Stan is a 10-minute walk across Riksbron. Hotels range from budget chains on Vasagatan to full-service business hotels. It is loud and busy during the day. Commuters and tour groups share the same pavements. If you want central without the cobblestones of Gamla Stan, this is your default.

  • Östermalm food hall (Östermalmshallen) 15 min
  • Djurgården ferry terminal (Slussen) 30 min

Södermalm, Stockholm

Stockholm's coolest island, cliff views, craft coffee

Mid-range $90-$280/night

Södermalm is a hilly island south of Gamla Stan, connected via Slussen. Götgatan is the spine running from SoFo (south of Folkungagatan) up to Medborgarplatsen square. Hornsgatan cuts west toward Mariatorget, the neighborhood's most charming square with a daily farmers market. The Monteliusvägen cliff path gives panoramic views over the old town for free. Design hotels sit near Söder Mälarstrand waterfront. The T-bana at Slussen and Medborgarplatsen reaches the city center in 5 minutes. Budget options cluster toward Folkungagatan on the eastern end. Bar noise around Medborgarplatsen picks up on weekends after midnight, so ask for a courtyard room.

Gothenburg, Haga and Vasastan

Sweden's second city, easier on the wallet

Budget $75-$220/night

Gothenburg is Sweden's most underrated city for visitors. Haga is the historic wooden-house district, with Haga Nygata lined with vintage shops and massive cinnamon buns at Café Husaren. Vasastan to the north has the best independent restaurants on Vasagatan and Viktoriagatan. Kungsportsavenyen, known locally as Avenyn, is the main boulevard running from Central Station to Götaplatsen art square. Hotels cluster along Avenyn and near the station. Prices run about 30 percent below equivalent Stockholm options. Liseberg amusement park and Universeum science museum are both reachable on foot in under 20 minutes from central hotels. Trams cover the city for 40 SEK per ride.

Best for

Walk times
  • Haga Nygata from Kungsportsplatsen 18 min
  • Feskekörka fish market from Central Station 10 min
  • Liseberg from Avenyn midpoint 15 min
Skip if: Your entire Sweden trip is Stockholm-focused. Gothenburg deserves its own separate visit
Local tip: Stay near Kungsportsplatsen rather than the far end of Avenyn. Trams run in every direction from there and you skip the 15-minute walk.

Swedish Lapland, Kiruna and Abisko

Aurora hotels, reindeer safaris, genuine Arctic wilderness

Mid-range $130-$600/night

Swedish Lapland sits above the Arctic Circle, with Kiruna as the regional hub and Abisko National Park 100 km to the northwest. The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, 17 km from Kiruna, rebuilds every November and operates year-round with permanent cold rooms at minus 5 Celsius. Abisko has the best aurora viewing statistics in Sweden because the Torneträsk lake creates a local microclimate that clears cloud cover. Kiruna town has standard hotels on Föraregatan near the city center. The overnight train from Stockholm takes 17 hours and arrives at 11am. March is the sweet spot: dark enough for auroras, enough snow for dog sledding, and temperatures around minus 20 Celsius at night.

Best for
Aurora huntersadventurous couplesbucket-list travelers
Walk times
  • Kiruna town center to train station 15 min
  • Abisko Aurora Sky Station cable car base 5 min
  • ICEHOTEL to Jukkasjärvi medieval church 8 min
Skip if: You want city life or are traveling May through August without interest in midnight sun hiking
Local tip: Book ICEHOTEL warm rooms rather than cold art suites if you want the location without sleeping at minus 5. Same site, half the price, and you still get the bar and aurora tours.

What is the best area to stay in Sweden for first-time visitors?

Norrmalm in central Stockholm. You are 400 meters from Central Station, 10 minutes walk to Gamla Stan, and T-Centralen metro reaches anywhere in the city within 20 minutes. Hotels start around $110 per night for mid-range. It is not the most atmospheric neighborhood, but for orientation and logistics on a first trip, nothing beats it.

Is it worth staying outside Stockholm on a first visit to Sweden?

Yes, but only if you have 5 or more days total. Gothenburg deserves at least 2 nights on its own. The overnight train from Stockholm to Kiruna in Lapland takes 17 hours and arrives around 11am, making it a realistic add-on for a week-long trip. Budget $75 to $130 per night in Gothenburg, $100 to $150 for standard rooms in Kiruna.

When is the best time to visit Swedish Lapland for the northern lights?

Late February through mid-March. The Torneträsk lake near Abisko creates a microclimate that keeps skies clearer than surrounding areas. Temperatures drop to minus 15 to minus 25 Celsius at night. Book Abisko accommodation at least 3 months ahead. ICEHOTEL cold art suites in Jukkasjärvi sell out by October for the following January and February.

How much should I budget per night for hotels in Sweden?

Stockholm averages $130 to $180 per night for mid-range. Gothenburg and Malmö run $90 to $140. Swedish Lapland varies widely: guesthouses in Kiruna cost $100 to $150, ICEHOTEL warm rooms are $200 to $350, and cold art suites go from $400 to $600. Sweden has no equivalent to UK or US budget chains at under $70 per night.
