West Central District

The temple core where Tainan began

Budget $45-$120/night

This is the old city. Stay here and you wake up two minutes from Confucius Temple on Nanmen Road and ten minutes from Chihkan Tower. The lanes around Shennong Street still have wooden shophouses, lantern-strung tea bars, and the kind of breakfast joints that have run since 1955. Yongle Market on Guohua Street is the food anchor: beef soup, milkfish congee, shrimp rolls. Hayashi Department Store sits on Zhongyi Road as the photogenic landmark. Streets are narrow and scooter-heavy, so pick a hotel on a side lane off Minquan Road for quieter sleep.

Best for
First-time visitors who want templessnack streetsand walkable history
Walk times
  • Confucius Temple 2 min
  • Chihkan Tower 8 min
  • Shennong Street 12 min
Skip if: You need a quiet room or a treadmill in the gym. Old buildings, thin walls, scooter noise from 7am.
Local tip: Skip the queue at Chihkan Tower's main entrance. Enter through the side gate on Minzu Road instead, ticket window is the same and lines are half as long.

Anping District

Old fort, harbor light, oyster country

Budget $50-$140/night

Anping sits on the coast about 6 kilometers west of the old city. This is where Dutch traders landed in 1624, and Anping Old Fort still anchors the area. Yanping Old Street is the tourist spine, packed weekend afternoons with shrimp cracker stalls and tofu pudding shops. The Tree House on Gubao Street, where banyan roots swallowed an old warehouse, is the Instagram stop. Sunset over the canal at Anping Harbor Historic Park is the real draw. Stay here if you want sea breeze and morning quiet. Bus 2 runs to the old city in 25 minutes, or grab a Uber for around NT$150.

Best for
Couplesphotographersanyone prioritizing seafood and slower mornings
Walk times
  • Anping Old Fort 3 min
  • Tree House 6 min
  • Anping Harbor sunset point 10 min
Skip if: You want temple hopping on foot. Getting back to West Central means a bus or taxi every time.
Local tip: Eat oyster omelets at Chen's on Anbei Road, not the famous one on Yanping Old Street. Half the price, locals only, runs out by 8pm.

East District

Modern Tainan, malls, university energy

Budget $55-$160/night

East District is where Tainan grew after the 1980s. National Cheng Kung University sits at its heart on University Road, surrounded by bookshops, brunch cafes, and craft beer bars. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi on Ximen Road is the main department store, and the Tainan Cultural Center on Zhonghua East Road hosts concerts. Hotel rooms here are bigger, newer, and have actual gyms. The trade-off is distance: you are 15 minutes by taxi from the temple core. Choose this area if you arrived by high-speed rail at Shalun Station and want a smooth landing, or if you came for the National Museum of Taiwan Literature.

Best for
Business travelersfamiliesanyone who values a real fitness room and quiet floors
Walk times
  • NCKU campus 5 min
  • Shin Kong Mitsukoshi 10 min
  • by taxi to Chihkan Tower 15 min
Skip if: You came for the old town atmosphere. East District feels like any modern Taiwanese city after dark.
Local tip: Take the free shuttle from Tainan HSR Station, not the regular train. It drops you at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi in 22 minutes and runs every 15 minutes.

Yongkang District

Budget beds and the city's biggest night market

Budget $30-$75/night

Yongkang sits just north of East District and is where most students and budget travelers actually sleep. Garden Night Market on Hai'an Road runs Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday and pulls 10,000 people a night for stinky tofu, papaya milk, and grilled corn. Rooms here are the cheapest in the city, often half the price of West Central for the same size. The catch is you are 20 minutes by bus from the temple district, and the streets are not pretty. Stay here if budget matters more than walkability, or if you came specifically for the night market scene. Bus 5 runs to Tainan Train Station in 18 minutes.

Best for
Backpackersfood-focused travelersanyone who wants night market access
Walk times
  • Garden Night Market (open nights only) 8 min
  • Tainan Park 6 min
  • by bus to Tainan Train Station 18 min
Skip if: You want walkable sightseeing or any hotel with character. Most properties here are 3-star business chains.
Local tip: Garden Night Market only opens Thursday, Saturday, Sunday. Show up Tuesday and you will find an empty parking lot. Wensha Night Market on Ximen Road runs the off-nights.

Is Tainan walkable?

The old city core (West Central District) is very walkable. From Confucius Temple to Chihkan Tower is 8 minutes on foot. But Tainan as a whole is spread out: Anping is 6km west, East District is 4km east. You will use taxis or buses to move between zones.

How many days do you need in Tainan?

Two full days covers it. Day one for West Central temples and Shennong Street, day two for Anping fort and sunset. Add a third if you want to eat through Yongkang night market and visit the Chimei Museum on Wenhua Road.

What's the best area for first-time visitors to Tainan?

West Central District. You wake up next to Confucius Temple, walk to breakfast at Yongle Market, and never need a taxi for the main sights. Pick a hotel on a side lane off Minquan Road to avoid scooter noise.

Is it cheaper to stay in Yongkang or West Central?

Yongkang runs about 40 percent cheaper for similar room size. A 3-star room in Yongkang sits at $35 to $50 per night. The same square meters in West Central is $70 to $90. The trade-off is a 20-minute bus ride to the temple area every day.
