Lagos

Best beaches, best old town, best all-round base in the western Algarve

Budget $65-$380/night

Lagos is the most complete base in the western Algarve. Rua 25 de Abril runs through a pedestrianised old town ringed by 16th-century walls. Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo are 15 minutes on foot south of the center. The restaurant strip along Rua da Graca draws crowds until midnight but stays manageable. Budget guesthouses cluster near Rua da Barroca; better hotels push toward Meia Praia to the north. Trains to Faro take 1h45 and cost around $6. Rent a kayak at Ponta da Piedade to see the grottos from the water. Book the old town in July. Everywhere else survives without advance notice.

Best for
Couplessolo travellersbeach-first visitors who still want a real town to eat and drink in
Walk times
  • Praia Dona Ana 20 min
  • Ponta da Piedade grottos trailhead 35 min
  • Meia Praia beach 40 min
Skip if: You need direct access to golf courses or a marina lifestyle. Lagos has neither.
Local tip: Avoid hotels on Rua do Ferrador on weekends. Bar noise from Stevie Rays carries until 3am.

Albufeira Old Town

The Algarve's most popular base for a reason, if you pick the right side

Budget $75-$420/night

Albufeira splits into two zones: the old town around Rua Candido dos Reis and the Strip along Avenida Francisco Sa Carneiro, 2km north. Stay in the old town. The Strip is pure package-holiday noise. From Rua Candido dos Reis you walk four minutes downhill to Praia dos Pescadores, the main central beach. Praias da Oura and Baleeira are 20 minutes east on foot. The old town has the best independent restaurants and easier parking than Vilamoura. Prices run 15 to 20 percent higher than Lagos for similar quality. Faro Airport is 40 minutes by taxi, about $45.

Best for
Familiesfirst-time Algarve visitors who want everything in one placeanyone prioritising beach variety
Walk times
  • Praia dos Pescadores 4 min
  • Praia da Oura 22 min
  • Old town 30 min
Skip if: You hate crowds. August in Albufeira is relentless. Lagos or Faro is quieter and 20 percent cheaper.
Local tip: Book restaurants by 6pm in July and August. Anywhere good on Rua Latino Coelho fills by 8pm and takes no walk-ins.

Vilamoura

Upscale marina with 5 golf courses in a 10km radius

Mid-range $120-$600/night

Vilamoura is purpose-built luxury. Avenida da Marina runs along a 1,000-berth yacht harbour lined with restaurants charging Lisbon prices. The main beach, Praia de Vilamoura, is 12 minutes walk from the marina. Five golf courses sit within 10km, including the Dom Pedro Old Course opened in 1969. Hotel clusters concentrate around the marina and Praia da Falesia to the east, one of the Algarve's longest stretches of sand at 6km. Faro Airport is 28 minutes by taxi, around $35. Supermarkets and pharmacies require a car. This is not a walking town outside the marina strip.

Best for
Golferscouples on a treat tripanyone who wants resort polish with genuine quality food at the marina
Walk times
  • Praia de Vilamoura 12 min
  • Praia da Falesia western end 35 min
  • Marina 18 min
Skip if: You want local character or are on a budget. Vilamoura is expensive and sterile outside golf season.
Local tip: October is the sweet spot: 22C, no crowds, golf prices drop 30 percent. Marina-facing rooms book out 6 weeks ahead in May.

Faro

The capital. Best value, best transport links, most overlooked base in the region.

Budget $55-$300/night

Faro gets skipped by most visitors who land at its airport and drive straight west. That is a mistake. The walled old city, entered through the 18th-century Arco da Vila on Praca Dom Francisco Gomes, takes 45 minutes to walk properly. Rua de Santo Antonio is the main shopping street. The Ria Formosa natural park starts at the ferry terminal on Rua da Comunidade Lusiada, 10 minutes walk from the old town. Faro has the best restaurant-to-price ratio in the Algarve. Hotels around Rua Ivens keep mid-range options within walking distance of the train station. The region-wide rail and bus network originates here.

Best for
Solo travellersrepeat Algarve visitorsanyone using public transport to explore the whole region
Walk times
  • Arco da Vila old city gate 8 min
  • Ria Formosa ferry terminal 10 min
  • City center via Bus Line 16 25 min
Skip if: You want to be steps from a west Algarve beach. Faro's beaches require a ferry or 15-minute drive.
Local tip: Most old town restaurants close Monday nights. Plan around it or eat on Rua de Santo Antonio instead.

What is the best area to stay in the Algarve for beaches?

Lagos wins for beach variety and drama. Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, and the grottos at Ponta da Piedade are all within 35 minutes on foot of the old town. For long flat family-friendly sand, Meia Praia is 4km north of Lagos center. Albufeira has more beaches within a short bus ride, but none as visually striking as the Lagos sea stacks.

Is Lagos or Albufeira better for tourists?

Lagos has more character. The old town walls, independent restaurants on Rua da Graca, and the cliff walks give you something to do beyond the beach. Albufeira has better infrastructure for families and more hotel choice at every price point. Albufeira old town is genuinely charming. The Strip is not. If this is your first Algarve trip and you have children, Albufeira. For everyone else, Lagos.

What is the cheapest area to stay in the Algarve?

Faro is consistently 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Lagos or Albufeira for equivalent hotels. Budget rooms start around $55 per night near the train station on Rua Ivens. The trade-off is that the best Atlantic beaches require a ferry or short drive. Faro's Ria Formosa islands are accessible by public ferry from the city center for around $3 return.

How far is Vilamoura from Faro airport?

28 minutes by taxi. The fare runs $32 to $38 depending on traffic. There is no direct public bus from the airport to Vilamoura. The alternative is Bus Line 16 to Faro city center for $2.50, then a regional bus via Loule, adding around 50 minutes total. Most Vilamoura guests take a taxi. It is worth splitting the cost with other guests if you can coordinate on arrival.
