Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel

The main hub for first-timers and easy island access

Mid-range $90-$280/night

Ponta Delgada is where most visitors land and most hotels cluster. The waterfront along Avenida Infante D. Henrique runs from the ferry terminal to the iconic triple-arch gates Portas da Cidade. Rua Marques da Praia e Monforte holds most cafes and restaurants worth visiting. You are 10 minutes from the airport and 8 minutes walk from Mercado da Graca. Day trips to Sete Cidades, Furnas, and Nordeste all start here with rental cars from the airport. The old town around Largo de Goncalo Velho Cabral has cheaper guesthouses. Accommodation on Rua do Rego costs 20 percent less than waterfront rooms with no real downside.

Best for
First-time visitorstravelers doing inter-island connectionsanyone who wants restaurants and transport close by
Walk times
  • Portas da Cidade (triple-arch city gates) 5 min
  • Mercado da Graca central market 8 min
  • Marina of Ponta Delgada 10 min
Skip if: You want quiet countryside. The city is pleasant but the natural landscapes that make the Azores special are 30 to 60 minutes outside.
Local tip: Stay within 3 blocks of Avenida Infante D. Henrique. Hotels one block inland on Rua do Rego or Rua Dr. Jose Bruno Tavares Carreiro cost 20 to 30 percent less with no real difference in location.

Furnas, Sao Miguel

Geothermal village for hot springs and volcanic atmosphere

Mid-range $80-$160/night

Furnas sits in a volcanic caldera 40km east of Ponta Delgada. The village center on Rua Doutor Frederico Moniz Pereira has guesthouses and Parque Terra Nostra, where a large thermal pool holds 39C year-round. Steaming fumaroles bubble on Rua das Furnas next to the road. Cozido das Furnas, a meat stew cooked underground in volcanic heat for 6 hours, is served at Restaurante Tony's daily from noon. Nights are quiet, foggy, and genuinely atmospheric. You need a car to visit other parts of the island. Most guests stay one or two nights and find it transforms the trip from a sightseeing run into something more memorable.

Best for
Coupleswellness travelersanyone who wants to soak in thermal pools in a misty volcanic valley at night
Walk times
  • Parque Terra Nostra thermal pool entrance 7 min
  • Fumaroles on Rua das Furnas 4 min
  • Lagoa das Furnas lakeside viewpoint 25 min
Skip if: You need reliable Wi-Fi for work or want quick airport access. Furnas is remote and infrastructure is basic.
Local tip: Book Terra Nostra Garden Hotel if budget allows. The thermal pool is exclusive to guests after 7pm, which means you swim with around 10 people instead of 200 day-trippers.

Angra do Heroismo, Terceira

UNESCO heritage city with cobblestones and real local life

Budget $70-$200/night

Angra is the most historically significant town in the Azores, with a UNESCO-listed old city built around Praca Velha. Rua da Se runs from the cathedral to the harbourfront past 16th-century buildings. The fortress Sao Joao Baptista overlooks the harbor from Monte Brasil, a 20-minute walk. Hotel options are smaller and typically in converted manor houses on Rua Direita or Rua do Galo. Prices run 20 to 40 percent below Sao Miguel. Terceira has its own airport with direct Lisbon flights. The rope-style bullfighting at Praca de Touros is unique to this island. You will not find tourist strips here, just authentic Azorean town life with residents who actually live there.

Best for
History loverstravelers wanting fewer touristsanyone visiting Terceira for its festivals and rope-bullfighting tradition
Walk times
  • Praca Velha main square 3 min
  • Se Cathedral of Angra 6 min

Horta, Faial

Sailor's port with whale watching and the Atlantic's most famous bar

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Horta is a small port city on Faial island, famous among transatlantic sailors for centuries. Peter's Cafe Sport on Rua Ernesto Rebelo has been serving sailors since 1918 and is the social center of town every evening. The marina along Rua Vasco da Gama is covered in murals painted by passing boats, a tradition dating to the 1940s. Whale watching boats depart from the harbour daily in summer targeting sperm whales 15 minutes offshore. Hotels along Rua do Conselheiro Medeiros cost $90 to $180 per night. Faial is 20 minutes by ferry from Pico island, making a two-island combination easy and very popular with repeat visitors to the archipelago.

Best for
Whale watchingsailorscouples doing a multi-island trip combining Faial and Pico
Walk times
  • Peter's Cafe Sport on Rua Ernesto Rebelo 6 min
  • Marina murals and sailors' wall 8 min
  • Horta Museum 10 min
Skip if: You want the easiest logistics. Faial needs a flight or ferry connection and has fewer hotel options than Sao Miguel.
Local tip: The ferry to Pico takes 20 minutes and costs under 10 euros each way. Stay in Horta but add a full day on Pico for the ascent of Mount Pico, 2,351m, the highest point in Portugal. Book the ferry the day before in summer.

Which island in the Azores is best for a first visit?

Sao Miguel is the right call for a first trip. It has the most direct flights, the widest hotel range, and the best variety of landscapes. Sete Cidades crater lake, Furnas hot springs, and Nordeste coastal cliffs are all within 90 minutes of each other. Fly into Joao Paulo II Airport, base yourself in Ponta Delgada, and rent a car for $40 to $50 per day. You can cover the entire island in 3 to 4 days without a guide.

When is the best time to visit the Azores?

June through September gives the best weather odds, with temperatures between 22 and 26C on Sao Miguel. July and August are peak season and hotel prices rise 30 to 50 percent. May and October offer lower rates, under $120 for solid mid-range hotels, with fewer tourists but more rain. The Azores sit in the Atlantic weather belt and are never fully dry, but summer mornings are usually clear before afternoon clouds roll in.

Do you need a car in the Azores?

Yes, for Sao Miguel you need a rental car to reach Furnas, Sete Cidades, and the northeast coast. Public buses connect major towns but run infrequently and skip most scenic stops. Rental rates start at $35 to $50 per day in summer. Book before you arrive in July and August since local stock runs out fast. In Ponta Delgada itself you can walk to most things, but the volcanic landscapes worth visiting require driving narrow Atlantic roads.

Is Furnas worth staying overnight or is it just a day trip?

One night minimum makes a real difference. Arriving as a day tripper means sharing the Terra Nostra thermal pool with 200 people from tour coaches. Staying overnight lets you swim after 7pm when the pool empties down to maybe 10 guests. The hot springs, volcanic fumaroles on Rua das Furnas, and Cozido das Furnas lunch are all within walking distance of guesthouses. Budget $80 to $130 for a decent room. Furnas at dawn with steam rising from the ground is unlike anything else in Europe.
