Lenox

Tanglewood, spa retreats, and the fanciest address in the Berkshires

Luxury $180-$450/night

Lenox is the Berkshires at its most polished. Main Street has good restaurants and boutiques within a few blocks. Church Street connects to Walker Street where most high-end inns cluster. Tanglewood Music Center sits 1.5 miles out on West Street, the BSO summer home and the reason half the visitors are here July through August. Kripalu Center on Richmond Mountain Road is close if that matters. The downside: everything costs more in Lenox. A room that runs $140 in Great Barrington is $260 here. Book six weeks out for summer weekends or you will pay surge prices for whatever is left.

Walk times
  • Main Street restaurants 5 min
  • Kennedy Park trailhead 10 min
  • Lenox Village shops 4 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or visiting November through April. Half the town closes in the off-season.
Local tip: Wednesday night BSO open rehearsals at Tanglewood cost a fraction of concert tickets. Most visitors skip them. You should not.

Great Barrington

The Berkshires food hub, with prices that do not require a second mortgage

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Great Barrington is the most lived-in of the Berkshire towns. Railroad Street is the dining core, a compact strip with some of the best restaurants in western Massachusetts. Main Street runs parallel with independent shops and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center mid-block. Castle Street has a few quieter options. You are 20 minutes from most Berkshires attractions and Bash Bish Falls is a short drive. The town has a real year-round population, so it stays open in shoulder season when Lenox goes quiet. Rates run 25 to 30 percent lower than Lenox for comparable quality.

Walk times
  • Railroad Street restaurants 3 min
  • Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center 8 min

Skip if: You are here primarily for Tanglewood. The 25-minute drive adds up over a long weekend.
Local tip: Fuel Coffee on Railroad Street has real lines by 9am on weekends. Get there by 8:30 or plan to wait outside.

Stockbridge

The Norman Rockwell postcard version of New England. It actually looks like the paintings.

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Stockbridge is small, historic, and genuinely beautiful. Main Street is one block but anchors one of the prettiest village centers in New England. The Red Lion Inn has sat at the corner of Main and Route 7 since 1773. The Norman Rockwell Museum is on Route 183 about one mile from downtown. Chesterwood, sculptor Daniel Chester French's studio, is a short drive on Williamsville Road. It is quieter than Lenox and Great Barrington. You can walk the entire downtown in 10 minutes. Dining options are thin. Most people drive to Great Barrington for dinner. Summer weekends draw heavy day-tripper crowds.

Best for
History buffsfirst-time visitorscouples seeking a quiet weekend
Walk times
  • Red Lion Inn porch 2 min
  • Ice Glen hiking trail entrance 15 min
  • Stockbridge Bowl lakefront 20 min
Skip if: You want nightlife, a range of restaurants, or anything to do past 9pm.
Local tip: The Red Lion Inn porch is open to everyone, not just guests. Grab a rocking chair and a drink. Best free people-watching spot in the Berkshires.

Pittsfield

The actual city of the Berkshires. Less cute, more practical, and your wallet will notice.

Mid-range $90-$200/night

Pittsfield is the working city of the Berkshires with around 43,000 residents. North Street is the downtown spine with bars, restaurants, and Barrington Stage Company, one of the best regional theaters in New England. Park Square anchors the civic center. It is not as pretty as Lenox or Stockbridge but stays honest about what it is. You are central to everything, 20 minutes from Lenox, 25 from Great Barrington. The Berkshire Museum on South Street is worth two hours. Rates run 40 to 60 percent less than Lenox for similar room quality and availability is rarely a problem.

Best for
Budget travelerstheater fansanyone wanting central access without premium prices
Walk times
  • Barrington Stage Company on Linden Street 8 min
  • North Street restaurants 5 min
  • Berkshire Museum on South Street 10 min
Skip if: You want the classic New England inn experience. Pittsfield has chain hotels and urban motels, not quaint B&Bs.
Local tip: Barrington Stage Company tickets cost significantly less than Tanglewood for comparable performance quality. Check their schedule before you book anything else.

What is the best area to stay in the Berkshires for a first visit?

Great Barrington works best for first-timers. You are central to everything, Railroad Street has excellent food within walking distance, and prices run 25 percent less than Lenox. You can cover Tanglewood, Stockbridge, and Bash Bish Falls in one trip without paying peak-season Lenox rates.

How far in advance should I book the Berkshires in summer?

Six to eight weeks for Tanglewood weekends in July and August. The BSO runs around 10 major concert weekends and rooms within 15 miles sell out fast. Weekday summer visits are easier to book last-minute. Fall foliage weekends in mid-October fill nearly as fast as Tanglewood.

Is the Berkshires worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if skiing is on the plan. Jiminy Peak in Hancock and Catamount in Hillsdale are both within 30 minutes. Rates drop 40 to 50 percent from summer peaks. Many Lenox inns close November through April, so Pittsfield and Great Barrington have the most open inventory. Cross-country skiing at Notchview Reservation near Windsor is free.

Do I need a car to get around the Berkshires?

Yes. Public transit is minimal. You can walk within downtown Lenox or Great Barrington, but getting between towns requires a car. Tanglewood, Hancock Shaker Village, and Bash Bish Falls are accessible only by driving. Rent a car before you arrive. There are no rental offices in Lenox itself.
